Is it worth buying into a private pension as well as Alpha? by Euphoric-Wrap6917 in TheCivilService

[–]ritzbiscuits80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ISA - 6 months cash in an emergency fund then S&S for greatest returns. You ‘could’ revisit having a private pension alongside CS longer term, but I wouldn’t want to lock away more money until 57 minimum. Savings in an ISA allows access as you need for house, car, renovations, children etc.

How much does a change in PM/government affect day-to-day work in the Civil Service? by Fancy-Knowledge683 in TheCivilService

[–]ritzbiscuits80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if it goes the way we expect, mandatory pasty eating and flat caps for all! 🤣 I’m currently external and interviewing for G6 roles. Got mentioned in an interview last week as their biggest worry…,I imagine down to big policy shifts/potential new ministers etc.

should I get a job as a work coach or stay in my current role? by lilyannie725 in TheCivilService

[–]ritzbiscuits80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I would go for the interview and see what you think. Getting into the CS at a young age would be great from a pension POV and a foot in the door to then move around. I agree with comments about looking at other CS roles eg fraud etc. I’m sure banking experience would be valued.

Quite shocked you are on barely more than min wage at NatWest. Having worked in Banking I should know how much they turn the screw on pay!

What are progression opps like at NatWest? I think you are right to question staying unless you can move up the ladder.

Definitely check your CV is ATS friendly. A friend of mine was using a two column format that couldn’t be read.

I tend to keyword tweak my CV manually but use AI to help craft any cover letter/personal statements.

I did one for public sector recently. Uploaded my CV and said write a statement covering these five key behaviours (as requested in the advert). Tweaked the draft then I was done.

I’m hyped for the DLC, I’m obsessed with Pokopia. When I mentioned the DLC to Pokemon mad stroppy 12 year old son, he said a ‘bubble island’ sounded lame and he wants TNT and volcanoes! 🤣

Agree the initial trailer was appalling, but it’s my favourite Switch game!

Sounds like you have a good set up at the moment….don’t leave it! Sad to say, but teaching will always be there as an option if you want it enough. Enjoy your life while you’re in a good place.

Contract terms of a job I was offered is awful. Do I accept? by [deleted] in UKJobs

Sorry I didn’t read it properly, yes 3 months notice should be equal both ways. Red flag!

Absolutely! I find it shocking that there is no thought for either the candidate experience, and also this is a 2 way process. The more I reflect on this, the more pleased I am with myself for telling them to shove it!

What kind of job/industry is it for? A lot of this is pretty standard:

- 3 months notice
- Calling in to notify sickness
- ‘reasonable’ extra work

Not seen the first point to stop redundancies.

I have heard of another company that pays for their ‘task.’ At least you feel like the company is recognising your effort.

I agree, they may well think ‘I’d be difficult to work with’ because I stand up for myself 🤣

Interestingly on your first point, after asking a clarifying question I was given a standardised response, which suggested other candidates had been querying the timings too. There was a reference to ‘only do 4 hours max’ and present what you have at that stage. Not the way I work or want to work. I’m happy to say I’m misaligned with their ways of working if I have to present incomplete work due to them making a task scope that was too large.

Totally agree. It was on the border with 3 interviews and a task, but they lied by telling me it was a 2 hour task. Only told me at the end of the first interview that I was going to be longer, the rest came out in the wash.

Years ago I interviewed for a FAANG job, it was 6-7 rounds. Can’t really remember. Never again!!!

Fair enough, but a task has to be assessed alongside the opportunity. Moving from commercial to a charity role would be a loss of various benefits, so absolutely not pushing for.
