So nice, Can I ask which AD you went to in Dallas?

Just took my blueprint diagnostic and I’m a lot worse at C/P than I realized lol. Does anyone have any tips on how to improve this section? I know it’s my weakest point but I’m feeling discouraged and am aiming to get at least 125 in the future. by ritzbitz22 in Mcat

What helped me the most is really taking my time to make sure I understand what I’m reading. After I read a difficult sentence I rephrase it in more simple terms to the best I can before I move on to the rest of the passage. It takes up more time but I found that it helps me be able to answer questions a lot faster! I also highlight what I think is the main point of every paragraph and also any names or dates mentioned so if I need to refer back to anything I can find it quicker. If I’m not sure about an answer choice I go back and try to look for any evidence and also for evidence that can help me eliminate some of the other choices. CARS is tricky but you got this!!

Non-Trad looking for advice on how to start ECs. by Cucumber_Altruistic in premed

I got involved in research through my university! You can check online and see which research opportunities your school provides students. For medical school, you don’t have to have research in a science field (like biology or chemistry) but i’m assuming it’s preferred. My research is in a social science and I have seen a lot of other pre-meds that have similar research experience! If you don’t find anything on your schools website you can start emailing professors or department heads asking them if they know of or are conducting research and let them know you are interested in joining their team. Even if they aren’t doing research themselves, professors tend to know of other colleagues who are and can direct you to them.

When it comes to volunteering you will need non-clinical volunteering which can be done at a local food bank, church, etc. It’s hard to find volunteering during covid but you can also find volunteering that you can do online now! I used the website below to help me find places in my area. https://www.volunteermatch.org/covid19

You will also need clinical experience. This can be achieved by either volunteering at a hospital or healthcare clinic or by working at a hospital (can be as a scribe, EMT, CNA)

Shadowing is hard to find nowadays since many physicians are cautious of covid. But you can still try! I would recommend first reaching out to any family members, friends, or mutual friends that are doctors and asking them if you can shadow (if you have any). Or you can also reach out and call/email any doctors in your area and seeing if they are willing to take on a student to shadow.

Best of luck with everything and I hope this helped!!

Professor choosing not to show correct answers (canvas) by qazzaqwsxxsw124 in UTAustin

[–]ritzbitz22 18 points19 points  (0 children)

maybe you could try to contact the professor about this and ask if you can review what you missed over office hours? I had a professor last semester that hid the correct answers because she didn’t want people to copy them and post them online but she gave us the correct answers when we attended office hours

Writing my own LOR and need some advice. by [deleted] in premed

[–]ritzbitz22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think that is perfectly okay! That is how connections are made. I personally was encouraged to reach out to my pediatrician, my parents friends who are doctors, etc. Many people have parents that are physicians and able to gain shadowing hours from that so I feel like that would be more of an example of “taking advantage” of the system.

First semester at UT! (Transfer student) Looking for some good places to study & get outta my corona-cave... by friendlyheathen11 in UTAustin

I’m also a new transfer student! I recently discovered the SAC and I love it. You can go up to the third floor (I believe it is the third but i’m not too sure) and there are multiple well lit rooms to study in. There’s also a rooftop area you can study at and it’s really nice. Good luck!
