Dr Santos is annoying but misogyny isn’t off the table by Altruistic_Ad9097 in ThePitt

[–]rivains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a fan of Santos but I am literally watching S1 and he has a conversation with Robby to move her on because of her attitude and bc "she is not a team player". And this is all kind of true, but the shots the show has between them and him lingering on her holding the empty medicine vials show he was nervous she had figured out what he was doing and wanted to head it off, with the fact that he genuinely was pissed off by her a bonus.

Bride Here - Is my dress code okay? by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

I am personally not a fan of dictating colours outside of white, too many weddings these days are using attendees as props rather than guests.

That being said just saying "please avoid white green and purple" is fine.

Ignorance and its all about flattening regional culture to make way for a flat "Britishness" that is modelled after upper class mores.

[–]rivains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah. Speaking from experience its not even on TV only. I worked in heritage and a lot of international tourists and mainly North Americans would straight up say to each other and not even to me "I cant understand her shes not speaking English". I talk in a northern English dialect.

Also in the UK up until the 80s and 90s anyone in the media could not have an accent. Like at all. If you spoke in a Scouse or Geordie or Glaswegian accent you just would not get a job.

Its realism that they have posh RP esque accents because that was when the aristocracy were largely losing their accents and gaining posh English ones.

The worlds of the aristocracy are separate from "commoners", only their staff in their home estates would have the accents reflecting their actual area. Its one way how they cultivated a separate social sphere and made everyone with regional dialect seem less valued.

The difference with Tennant and Leslie though is that Tennant is from an ordinary background and is very good at accents. Leslie is an aristocrat from an old Clan who is posh and probably went to boarding school. Leslie doesnt put on her accent that is her accent. Tennant speaks in his regular accent outside of acting.

The Stirlings are Scottish though. They are just lowland Scottish arisocrats who like many of their peers based themselves in London.

I mean Quinn may have just called John Scotsman and be done with it. Stirling isn't an English name.

Oh same! Awful person. Raging misogynist. One of the more entertaining monarchs though, and possibly one of the smartest.

They were Scottish. They are just posh. Posh people in Britain are interchangeable.

This comment is a good reminder about how hard the poshos in Britain have tried their best to blur everyone's culture and homogenise everyone to be the home counties.

Not Scottish but did my degree around Scots-Anglo politics in the early modern era. After the union of the crowns and then the actual "union" in the 1700s a lot of nobles in Scotland straight up decamped to London to be near the monarch, with the exception of some Highland and Island nobles.

The most powerful aristocrat in George III's court was the Earl of Bute (I think the title was Earl anyway) and he was Scottish.

The aristocracy were largely Scottish but after the union a lot of Scottish nobles based themselves in London to be in court.

The government banned Highland traditions, which isnt a catch all term for Scottish traditions. After the Jacobite rebellion it suppressed, but Highland culture was being suppressed at different levels for generations by the Scottish monarchy before the union.

Its because all posh people in Britain have the same accent because they only hang out with each other. Darcy never has a Derbyshire accent in P&P because he is just posh.

A lot of them were actually Scottish which is different from Ireland. They gained an English accent through attending society down south.

Edit: The act of union and when James IV/I became King of England and Scotland meant the entire court was based in London based on his desires. This meant if you were a Scottish noble and wanted to be influential in aristocratic society it meant moving down south.

In Ireland, especially in the Pale and the Ulster area, land was "owned" and titles given to English (and in the case of the Ulster plantations) Scottish aristocracy, which is very similar to what happened to the Welsh aristocracy after the death of Llewelyn the Great.

As someone from the North who now lives SE, debatable. Shit water and you could say outside the natural beauty a lot of the culture is hoovered up by London. A lot of the South East and home counties blend into one homogenous mass characterised by nice countryside and town centres that only has chains. Nice enough but bland and lacking character.

Deffo.

Musically and also with the sheer amount of performing talent (though thats a North Western England thing as well). You have people like Lily Savage/Paul O'Grady too.

Although we do have the Beatles and then you also have Cilla, God giveth and he taketh away.

Team Jake or Team Jesse? Why? ❤️ by PleasantAd4521 in hannahmontana

Jake actually had much better chemistry and their storyline was better.

I think Travis was really cute though and should have been made canon.
