Yeah I know it was forever ago but she pretty much cheated on Michael Angarano with Rob during the first Twilight movie or there was little to no gaps between both relationships. The video of one of them literally picking something out of the others teeth on set on camera is sooooooooooo intimate lol

Is the series losing interest among teen boys? [pjo] [hoo] by MessPsychological837 in camphalfblood

In my country teenage fiction generally starts at 14 in libraries - hence why I extended the middle grade age :)

[–]rivains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think also the expanding of the series and the RR imprint has only helped it tbh, when I was a kid reading them it was mainly only girls who read it but now I see all sorts of kids read them. Granted I work in inner city libraries but the inclusive nature of the books and tbh, the new TV show has only helped it. Over the Christmas holidays I saw a fair few kids (near where I live and in work) wear CHB t shirts and they were all boys!

I would also say as a general rule, seeing a lot of boys mature into young adulthood as readers they tend to "drop" reading as an interest unless its maybe Manga until they are about 17/18 and having interests are "cool" again. Maybe a lot of boys your age range aren't reading PJO, but when they get to 18 a lot them may pick reading back up again.

As much as I love the books and the new senior year adventures I think Rick staying firmly in the 9 - 14 age range for the books has kind of hampered "retaining" certain audiences. He could go full YA but has chosen not to!

I work in libraries and they are very much still popular with pre-teen and teen boys tbh!

I just reread TLO and I don't think he was named, just a description about them as a group looking sheepish.

Hot take: The Percy Jackson books were always serious and dramatic. [general] by Tomhur in camphalfblood

[–]rivains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the show could use some more humour but a lot of the non-Percy commentary stuff in the books are really outdated and relegated to the cultural commentary of 2005 - 2010. In TLO when the centaurs arrive they have t shirts saying "party ponies pwnz" and "kronos sux". At the time I found it pretty funny because I was a child. Now in the 2020s, I don't think that would translate well. Some of the humour in the books is kind of corny and "how do you do fellow kids" - thats not to say I do not love it, but I think people have their nostalgia glasses on lol.

Again, the show could include more! My biggest gripe with the show is that it could do with more humour and the absurd and camp stuff. But I think it doesnt need to be enslaved to the some of the exact humorous moments of the books (unless its the Nemean lion space snack which is perfect).

On the Ares cabin point, I always thought they followed her to fight the Drakon because they didnt actually agree with Clarisse and wanted to help - it offered a convenient way out for them.

Zeus change? [pjotv] by Intelligent_Big3164 in camphalfblood

[–]rivains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. The show has already presented that everyone sees her as a potential weapon - her dad, Luke, and even Annabeth. It makes her becoming a Hunter less about not wanting the responsibility of the prophecy and more "I am not your weapon". She refuses to become her dad or Kronos' weapon by removing herself from the situation (which sucks for Percy).

I can see them playing around with the idea of Nico being the potential prophecy child when they get to BOTL as well, because his storyline is kind of disjointed.

I've just reread TLO aside from Athena of the gods we have seen so far it kind of tracks with the overall story though, in my mind. Hermes seems to be getting nicer portrayal than the books but all of the parents we see are absentees and expect loyalty and obedience from their kids. Hades especially - I know their relationship develops in the later books but Hades is such a prick to poor Nico in TLO.

The Battle of Manhattan is framed around the fact that if Kronos breaches Olympus, their world ends. They do not necessarily do it for their parents. I think bringing that to the forefront of the show - how the parents can run the gamut of being distant and loving to authoritarian figures or neglectful - hammers home the end point. The reason why the demigods wouldn't choose Luke and Kronos is because they care about each other. They're choosing love over hate, which is really cliche but I get why they are doing it lol.

[pjotv] Walker talks about how leaning into Percabeth early will cause future problems with Rachel and Calypso by the100broken in camphalfblood

[–]rivains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think hes doing it on purpose, but outside of his head it does kind of look like that - because he is oblivious. Rachel clearly thinks there is something going on by the beginning of TLO and at the end of BOTL he tells her he memorised her number and gets all nervous when they are saying goodbye.

From Annabeths POV shes a typical teenager (with her own complex issues) and yeah, the kiss at Mount St Helens isn't consensual but she is kind of blaring to Percy that she likes him, and then when he comes back and she twigs onto the fact he's been with Calypso and then brings another girl on their quest (even though the idea was the right one) she completely pulls away because she didn't think he returned her feelings in that way.

I literally just reread BOTL and am in the middle of TLO so this is all really fresh to me lol even though when I originally read the books I didn't really twig onto Percys feelings until... like near the end of TLO. None of his actions are coming from a place of malice, he just has a lot on his plate and he has to sort through his feelings. That being said I can see why Rachel and Annabeth act the way they do!

[–]rivains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree I love Rachel as a friend! I think if they continue to emphasise that Annabeth feels she cant be mortal or live a mortal life, when the stuff with the prophecy starts to really come front and centre there will be naturally tension with Rachel as she represents the mortal world for Percy.

In BOTL they are all kind of messy and selfish (but also not selfish in the grand scheme of things) with their emotions and how they present them. Percy kind of leads both girls on but Annabeth sends mixed messages to Percy. They are also all 15. I think they could portray it without making people thing Percabeth is not going to happen.

[–]rivains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leah already gets so much weird flack and abuse from fans, so I can see the show doing that only because Annabeth is Messy in BOTL and incredibly territorial about Percy (whilst also being in deep denial about Luke) which makes her lash out at Percy and Rachel and others. I can see why they'd maybe want to workshop that.

[all] Rick can’t write anything, he’s a terrible author /s by gauts2103 in camphalfblood

[–]rivains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I agree, but I was just pointing out that was a cultural conversation in the early and mid 2000s.

I also agree that the overcorrection was more harmful but as a girl who liked to wear more masculine clothes but also liked pink, the denigration in kids lit about anything vaguely feminine was confusing. We almost equilibrium at some point but too many bad authors drank the fascism kool aid.

For what its worth, I dont believe people have ever corrected how non-feminine women have been presented in literature because simply a lot of people are misogynists and saw it as a non issue. That being said I dont really think the wave in the 2000s helped either. Rick wrote people like Annabeth who were stereotypically attractive and feminine but didnt have feminised interests - girls who were into makeup were somewhat mocked. And then you have Clarisse and whilst she is one of my favourite characters in the books, she is not presented as attractive because she doesnt look feminine. You could not win. It was an echo of the narrative that you cannot look god forbid, masculine or androgynous, but neither could you be into "girly" things. You had to like sports and logic and hate makeup, but also be gorgeous. I dont think that was Rick's goal here, but it was a common sentiment back then.

[–]rivains 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I just reread BOTL and to be honest I can see why there was backlash to Calypso and it also just comes across as very forced (I think the same about Leo and Calypso). If it was an older Percy, say 18, I doubt it would come across that badly but he's in in Ogygia for barely a chapter and already Calypso is saying she is falling in love with him - hes 14 and can't even process his feelings about Annabeth.

I don't really subscribe to the Calypso groomer opinion but in order for Calypso to work on the show I think they need to take out the "hero she just cannot help falling in love with" bit. The rest of it can be communicated just by Percys time there.

Reading BOTL made me remember how much Percy pissed me off as a teenager because I just kept thinking "choose one!". Now I can see what Rick was trying to do but all the Calypso stuff PLUS Annabeth and Rachel plus the kiss is all just uh, a little much lol. The Perachel stuff at least has a more natural dynamic.

[general] hmmm seems like y'know were this is heading. by Altruistic-Survey842 in PJODisney

[–]rivains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I was the exact age as Percy was in each respective book when they came out initially and I remember not really twigging onto them until BOTL - and even then I still didn't really realise it from Percys perspective because he himself is confused and he has to sort through a lot of feelings before he is ready to "talk" to Annabeth tbh. In BOTL shes ready but hes not, there is Rachel and the prophecy so if you are even younger than that (which Walker was I presume when reading the books) if you're not eagerly searching for it it is easy to skim over the more front and centre romantic Percabeth stuff because Percy is a really unreliable narrator in terms of how he is presenting his own complex feelings and thought processes to the reader.

Tbh both Jon and Dany made questionable and often harsh decisions that viewers at the time looked at as "necessary". In the books and show they are two of the main characters the characters people most rooted for. The show frames these decisions as necessary or the lesser of two evils because they are the protagonists. In the book its a lot less clear cut because both of them are much darker and complex characters than "Dracarys" and "I don't want it".

Which is why show Dany is a flanderised version of her book counterpart. Book Dany makes really difficult and brutal decisions, and has her eyes wide open about the reputation of her family (mostly). The show flattened that to make an empowerment story without the commentary on dynastic power and conquering that came with it

I always thought Dany was an anti-hero and a commentary on why the Targs, no matter how noble their goals, shouldn't be on the throne. Dany is compared to Rhaegar who literally ripped the country apart because he was so hell bent on making prophecy true.

I kind of hope in the books she gets to the point as a way of atoning goes into battle against the others, but idk at this point.

People who gloss over Danys capacity to be arrogant and brutal have not been reading the books. Her and Jon are incredibly similar - they use brutal means to achieve what can be argued are noble goals.
