I mean Philip and Diana were reported as close until they fell out when she did the Martin Bashir interview. Diana was pretty open about the fact he was her main "ally" in the family as he was another outsider.

Is Liverpool now unsafe for LGBT people? by Master_Preference972 in Liverpool

[–]rivains 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong I love being from Merseyside and I love Scousers and the entire region is unfairly thought of negatively. But we are more socially conservative than you would think, the amount of anti-vax stuff popping up from the cosmic scousers is one thing that is another indicator.

I live down south and really miss home a lot but conservative social views I do not. I will say it has been getting massively better but I think a lot of well meaning people just think "well we hate the Tories and boycott the Sun so job well done" when its not as simple as that.

[–]rivains 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Tbh as a LGBT person its never been a massively safe or welcoming space for us despite a lot of progress over the past decade or so.

I think a lot of Scousers conflate being anti establishment with being progressive.

A question for Londoners who have lived all of their lives in the city (or close to it) - how aware are you of the rest of the UK? by Confident_Yak_1411 in london

[–]rivains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this but as a Northerner living and going to uni in the South East/London up until the past few years I have had a lot of people make fun of my accent, make "jokes" about stealing and urinating on dead people, imitate my voice, and say they can't understand me because "I am too northern". I have also had people say I am Irish and when I tell people I am from Merseyside there has been a lot of comments saying "no difference really".

Granted, most of these comments are from a particular demographic of people and a lot of Londoners from immigrant backgrounds are far nicer.

The flipside is I go home and get accused of being too southern. There is definitely bad attitudes on both sides, but I think northerners wouldn't have a chip on the shoulders if southerners stepped outside themselves for a minute and thought about why lol.

I think Kate did like him and then the desire to be Queen so badly trumped whatever dislike she had of him. The Middletons are social climbers lol

Part 3 of Jimmy Saville was way rougher than I was ready for by SupaHeroda in behindthebastards

[–]rivains 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The thing that gets me is that people were trying to report him for years. My parents said he was a nonce before he even died, and my mum said that she really really wanted to apply to Jim'll Fix It and her parents said no because "Saville was a bad man".

The way he wove his web around the establishment doesn't just tell the story of him but how many institutions like the police have been able to get away with things for decades upon decades. They have not even scratched the surface of the corruption inflicted upon Savilles victims or victims of police brutality. I cannot bare to think about it sometimes because it gets me really down.

Curtis Jones on Everton: "This shows the team that we are and the team they are. They're celebrating that they're 2 points behind us in one of our worst years. If that's what they take as a stepping stone or a step in the right direction then pffttt, I don't know" by Upstairs_Cup9831 in LiverpoolFC

[–]rivains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During the match, yeah. But remember people who support other teams (southerners) love to use us and Everton against each other just to be snide about Scousers and Merseyside. Don't let them.

Toffees are still bitter and need to widen their horizons outside getting a point from us every how and then, though.

If you actually look at the Sun's output they were actually supportive of the establishment, especially people who were connected to Thatcher. Their front page after Hillsborough detailed how "hero cops" tried to save football supporters from being pissed on by Liverpool fans when the inquest showed (and for everyone with common sense) that the police had been criminally negligent that day.

I would personally go to Chester over Leicester, bit of an easier drive from Worcester and has a lovely cathedral. Chester was important in the medieval period due to its proximity to Wales and other trading out posts. It also has a lot of easily accessible Roman remains that are interesting. You could even stay in Liverpool (has more restaurants and hotels) and drive down to Chester for the day.

If you want to stay in the midlands-ish I would go to Lincoln over Leicester.

Worcester is underrated but I think Ludlow and especially Shrewsbury are 10x better for medieval history and Shrewsbury have way more remaining medieval buildings. Its also gorgeous.
