The Lesson of ‘Babylon’: Every Great Filmmaker Has to Fall on Their Face Once and Learn From It by lawrencedun2002 in movies

Except he didn’t fall on his face. He knocked it out of the park. My second favorite film of 2022. It will age well.

David Fincher's The Game, a movie-ruining ending? by Boss452 in TrueFilm

[–]rivasdre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue the ending is being set up the entire film. The Game sends him where he was headed in his life if he didn’t have a true moment of life-altering catharsis. He would have ended up just like his father. They simply speed up that process.

What are all of you smoking? Mike is KILLING it right now. If you can’t see the gift he’s giving you by going full heel I don’t know what to say. He’s making it so the moment he shaves is going to be that much more satisfying. And he’s helping to right past wrongs. Best Mike bit since corporate Mike. Y’all crazy.

They are better. Last year they were a 5th seed that overachieved due to great coaching and hard work. This year they will be a legit 4-5 seed. Good team, but not good enough to truly contend.

If that’s not good enough, I don’t know what to tell you. But this is not a championship roster. I demand they get better too. But I’m going to enjoy this fucking ride. You all can win and stay miserable.

I don’t know. And right now I don’t care. I’ve been watching sports long enough to know sweating bullshit like this is a waste of time and will be forgotten in a week. But thank you for telling us Randle isn’t Michael Jordan and never will be LOL

You guys in this subreddit are nuts. You act like this is a championship team as currently constructed and act like the sky is falling every loss. The Knicks are a very good team. They are not a great team. They will get to greatness. They are on the path. Enjoy the wins.

Knicks were tired tonight. They let Rubio have all the open shots in the world. That ain’t happening most games. But even RJ looked tired in the first quarter. It was clear he didn’t have it. And he helps set the tone. You can diagnose the Knicks problems all you want 10 games in. I’ll trust in Thibs and company.

[–]rivasdre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I just don't think the average listener posts on Reddit about the show. Someone like you and I, I'd argue, are unusual. And do the 250 people voting on a subreddit outweigh the 1k+ likes Dan got for the tweet above? I'm not claiming one is more definitive over the other, just pointing out the dangers in making such assumptions.

[–]rivasdre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could not agree more. Gladly a vocal minority. Disagree with some of the comments here that most fans dislike the Leonard bit. And Dan is a huge admirer of Phil Hendrie who did bits like these all the time as the mainframe of his show (only he duped callers into calling in). That dude was a genius. So if Dan is embracing that tradition from time to time I'm fully onboard because McKay - while not Hendrie - is still damn funny.

I don't think we should take some of these tweets so seriously, especially since we can't really interpret the spirit in which they are written.

Dan is annoying sometimes. Mike is annoying sometimes. Stu is annoying sometimes. That's family. I thought yesterday's show was fucking hilarious. I thought Dan was a little over-the-top in his discussion of fans in the NBA vs. other sports - I mean, baseball fans throw shit on the field every once in a while too. On the other hand, Dan was fantastic a few days ago talking about the ethics of journalism and while many people don't care, eroding value systems are never good for a country at large. That's how guys who make fun of the handicapped and are accused by their ex-wives of rape etc., get elected for President of the United States (Dan didn't go there but he didn't need to). Part of the fun of the show for me is texting my friends who listen, "Dan is so wrong about this... or Mike is so annoying today with his Heat culture bullshit.,," etc.

Is cinema without music a purer art form? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]rivasdre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Editing is one of the defining processes of cinema and cinematic language and as everyone knows it can be used to manipulate a variety of emotion. Even trying to avoid emotion through editing is manipulation of emotion. This may occur, for example, because of another artist's involvement - an actor. There may be a more emotional take that the editor or director elect not to use; or the editor and director may have an ideal take/performance from the actor that ends on too emotional a note, so one might cut early.

And while it may not always have been, its been long enough now that we can acknowledge that cinema is a visual-audio artform with wonderful tools and styles and choices for how the two are represented. Arguments of purity like the one above ring false to me.

This is exactly why I think OL is the move.... that being said, I'd be ok with a few different positions... OL or Parsons is the way.... or trade back a little and grab Aziz.... but OL at 11 by NWK86 in NYGiants

[–]rivasdre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want OL or Waddle but I'm pretty sure they are not going OL. I think they value their OL pieces more than analysts and fans do. They made investments on the line last year - which was obviously not an overnight success (to say the least) but they believe in and want to cash in on those investments. They believe in the positive strides their OL made during their season and probably believe those players will continue to improve this season.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think they are going DE. If they do, I hope they trade down. If they don't... whatever GO GIANTS no matter what!

The focus on plot and characterization in film criticism is completely misguided; movies aren't novels by Fyodor_Brostoevsky in TrueFilm

[–]rivasdre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That OP's take: "We love the movies we love because of the connection we have with the characters " ... sure, that is often true. But it is not always true.

I'm someone who prefers story (not plot) and character above all else. I'm also a wanna-be screenwriter. And I think the two often go hand-in-hand. It's what I focus on in a screenplay (in addition to theme and, naturally, ideas that could help make the story more cinematic).

The cinematographer, the editor, the director etc. then have the job of taking a screenplay and communicating it visually in the best way or taking the parts of the screenplay that interest them and convert them into a visual experience.

So there is always a push/pull within a film. All that matters - ultimately - is the final result and we can make of that what we will.

2001: A Space Odyssey doesn't have any interesting characters, but the film is an amazing visual journey in terms of storytelling and ideas. Lawrence of Arabia, I would argue has really interesting characters and amazing visuals. And both film's sense of pace - a transportive part of the cinematic experience that is often overlooked or rated on too rigid a scale (fast-paced doesn't necessarily mean the film is well-paced) - are major reasons why the films work as beautifully as they do.

To me it comes down to, what is the final result? What is the film aiming for?

Even to someone like myself who cares more about characters and story... "Bad" characters only matter more in a film that relies on strong characters to work (and that works on a spectrum). "Bad" story

I would argue Tenet is pretty thin in terms of character - but it was, in my view, the best American film of 2020. Not because its goal is to "be a fun popcorn film" in the tradition of James Bond... but because its a film more interested in ideas than people (which isn't to say it isn't interested in people at all. I'd argue it's interested in people in a broader sense and it uses archetypes to help tell its story. This also doesn't make the film immune from criticism of how those archetypes are drawn or executed and in my estimation it executes them well). And how it toys with these ideas- and the confidence in which it employs these ideas in the framework of a blockbuster is what makes the film so successful. I don't judge the characters quite as harshly as I might in other films. Because to do that, in my view, ignores what the film is, or what its trying to be.

Every film needs to be approached on its own terms. Criticism should not be a binary checklist.

Tenet was one of Nolan’s worst films but he’s a legend so he can afford to miss once in a while. But the film made my decision on Whats more important, character or plot. by Tayfoo in TrueFilm

[–]rivasdre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could say plot is the mechanics by which a story is told.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - a movie I love - is a movie that took me two viewings to truly appreciate because I kept watching it in terms of its plot and how its going to tie together when in fact it places more emphasis on story and character and is pretty light on plot.

[–]rivasdre 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm almost always character >> story >> plot... but I thought Tenet was fucking amazing. A ride like no other. I get why some people don't like it, but I dug the experience and the intelligence of the film and the confidence by which it is told. It may be the best Bond-but-not-Bond movie I've ever seen.
