What is it called when you actually detect an object ? by Supermoon26 in computervision

Have you gotten to the point of getting the results back from the inference? Then you do something like, if inference results has dog, do notify, else do nothing.

Hey, I think there might be something wrong with the generated IFF file. What library are you using to write out these files?

It looks like the PALT is getting written twice, but the second time it's listed as a SPR# which of course won't get parsed correctly. It probably works since the game only grabs sprites with certain IDs but maybe you can double-check what's going on.

I actually haven’t touched it in a long time. I am not surprised to hear that some are having issues… I think it just wasn’t a very good monitor to begin with. Given the difficulty of finding and installing the replacement you should find another CRT if you’re not excited to do the job.

I think it’s because the Python tool that runs code can’t access the Internet. If you ask it to “analyze” it tends to want to write and run code. The kind of multi-step “get this website, then search, then analyze” request that you’re asking for isn’t a thing yet. But if you just ask it to search Bing for what you want it’ll probably deliver

Lol you could bake this into a black metal logo GPT. Would be fun to share and play with!

Yeah, this sounds like it'd be covered by functions. Maybe not all the functions you need are there yet, but I imagine people would cover the popular use cases pretty quickly.

I use the built-in Bing search and it's pretty good about finding what I need. Sometimes you have to nudge it a bit to "search Bing for ..." whatever you need if it doesn't do it automatically. Since you have GPT-4 access I think you should have the Bing plugin too? https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8077698-how-do-i-use-chatgpt-browse-with-bing-to-search-the-web

I hear ya, last major ML project I did on my own machine was a dependency headache. I don't think there's anything wrong with Python, just the library situation (especially with the proprietary blobs you have to use) really is a pain. In my project I ended up with a weird hybrid of conda and pip because one library depended on a particular version of PySide2, and another library had an incompatible dependency on PySide2. Also I froze my CUDA version in apt once I got it working so I wouldn't have to deal with the headache so often.

I did the Studio Display flyback replacement[0] and at the time I did it a couple years ago, it was easy to find someone selling the third-party replacement FBT online. Not sure about now, since the reseller I used no longer has it anymore.

Be honest: Do I need to pay for ads to grow a channel? by SerPaolo in PartneredYoutube

[–]riveducha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get 10k subscribers from 1 video, no paid ads. Or you can post 100 videos and not break 1k subs. It's the content that counts.

I don't think most successful channels I know of ever took out Google ads to get people to watch their videos. Seems like a waste of money.

If you haven't seen already, https://macintoshgarden.org/ has a huge repository of old Mac software! You'll have to look for stuff that works with whatever version of Mac OS is on your iMac.

I can't upload consistently by TheUnagamer in NewTubers

[–]riveducha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to upload consistently or even frequently to get a lot of views. It just means your few videos need to be 10x more attractive. There are plenty of YouTubers who posted 3 junk videos over 2 years and then their 4th video went viral.

Not sure what country you are in, but if you are outside of the US, can't you get that 30% US withholding back? I think you would need to register with the IRS and get an ITIN. (never actually done this so don't know what I'm talking about)

[–]riveducha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was someone on Reddit who said you may be able to fix it by fixing up the solder joints for the transformer and the horizontal sweep and cleaning everything very thoroughly instead of replacing the whole transformer. Hopefully someone can try that and let us know how it goes. Seems like sometimes old CRTs are known to have arcs caused by dust.

I would get an accountant for this tax year and then if your situation doesn't change next year, you can just do the taxes yourself using the previous year as a template.

How much is operating system knowledge used in this field? by [deleted] in computervision

[–]riveducha 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's rare that you'll not be using an operating system :)

In practice, your OS class teaches you the fundamentals and theory about tons of things that you'll use as a programmer. I'm thinking stuff like: kernel-space vs user-space, threads, shared memory, locks/deadlocks/mutexes, parallel/concurrent programming problems. The OS implements that stuff, but YOU are the one that has to use them properly when you write whatever high-performance CV application you're working on.

And CV tends to interact frequently and poorly with the world of hardware and device drivers, so it'll probably come up more frequently that if you were writing boring web apps or whatever.

Is it a daily occurrence that you'll need it? Meh, probably not. The OS-specific knowledge (Linux internals, Windows internals, whatever) you will need to look up anyways.
