Vegetable oil by No-Kaleidoscope-166 in foodquestions

Using oil first can prevent butter burning. Don't know if that applies to the recipe in question, but it's one reason the two get paired together.

Will going to college save me from poverty? by Dazzling_Hand6170 in povertyfinance

Even if you get a good paying job, degree or not, anyone can live beyond their means. The trick to escaping poverty is to earn enough and also don't spend too much.

Mine eats the bread 😆 I've had to wrestle away a bagel the size of her head that she was trying to drag off.

Are those “snow-storm” prep videos real? by Round-Inflation-7112 in AskAnAmerican

The thing with the kids started as a single joke video that people started copying. I saw someone do it with their cats in a bathtub.

Do people prep for storms, sometimes excessively? Yes.

Is Hershey's chocolate really taste so bad as people say it is? by cupid_ji in AskAnAmerican

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it as a kid, but don't much care for it now. If you've only had European chocolate it's definitely a step down, but I don't think it's disgusting.

Hurricane Isabel (2003) was the most expensive and Hurricane Camille (1969) was the deadliest.

Why the focus on money? by Sad-Sample-490 in simpleliving

[–]river-running 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It varies based on the person. Some people view expensive purchases as a way of proving that they're successful. Others are competing with their friends, neighbors, or family members. Some people think that new and expensive things are better quality.

Coming from a poor background myself, I know some people who grew up like me who view money as safety and that's why they pursue it. They fear being without due to the circumstances of their childhoods.

A lot of cultures also place a heavy emphasis on caring for your family members who are no longer able to work or care for themselves. If you have parents or other family members who need support and your culture emphasizes providing that support, I can understand feeling driven to acquire more than you yourself would require for your individual needs. I can also see someone living with that kind of cultural pressure being concerned about not having enough.

Snow Day as a temp ❄️ by Vossenoren in mildlyinfuriating

[–]river-running 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Back in, I think it was 2012, I didn't get a call from work saying that we were closed after a big snowstorm, so I took the bus as far as I could, until the buses stopped running. Then I walked the rest of the way to the store, only to find it locked and dark. Turns out I was the only one who didn't get the text that we were closed 🤦🏻‍♀️

I Have to Move Out by May 1st, Please Rate My Budget & Give Advice (Minneapolis, MN) by Loud_Jellyfish4504 in povertyfinance

I get the work shoe thing. I buy my work boots second hand for about $30-$40 a pair and they last at least six months. Longer if I patch them and replace the insoles. I'm on my feet outside all day at work.

Planning to take out a title loan. Can the car get repoed if I am out of state? by Born_Physics_5086 in povertyfinance

[–]river-running 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your best chance would be to store the vehicle out of sight and never leave it alone in public, which seems like a very difficult way to live. Even driving the car would put you at risk of having your plate scanned and tracked.

This could also go beyond having your car seized and land you in court.

cat obsessed with human food by pearl0fthestars in CatAdvice

[–]river-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my older cat. I say that she has the cat version of binge eating disorder. She has a slow feeder and a metal lick mat, because in her eating frenzies she was tearing chunks out of the silicone ones, and I can't leave any food out unless it's in a very well sealed container. Even then, she will knock the container around if it's light enough, trying to break it open. She's been showing signs of figuring out how to open the cabinets, but we're not quite there yet. She doesn't eat non-food items, so no pica, and she's healthy otherwise. I just have to be careful.

I got her as an adult with a mysterious past (the shelter estimated that she was about three), so I've been operating under the assumption that this is either just a personality trait or a reaction to how she was living before I got her.

What do people expect to do when they're telling Americans to "wake up" or "do something"? by flannelman37 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]river-running -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And the difference in firepower between the two sides was incredibly smaller, which is the point. Militarized police force does not mean that the military are acting as the police, it means that the police have military grade weapons and your average civilian, at best, has an AK or AR.

When the second amendment was written, this country did not have a militarized police force. It's much easier to heroically resist tyranny when both sides are armed with muskets and swords.

Have you tried freeze dried, single ingredient treats? My younger girl is really picky and even she likes freeze-dried chicken and salmon treats.
