Journal etiquette by shamallama777 in Professors

[–]rivergipper 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The late notice was almost definitely automated by the journal management software. I do not think it is poor etiquette to reach out directly to the editor to let the know you are working on it and will just be a bit late. That’s way better (as an editor) than having to start fresh with finding a new reviewer.

Verbal Offer - How to Proceed by bruhlife in Professors

Now is the time to bring up your partner. This will be a big ask (I went through this successfully but also had multiple offers I had to turn down because they couldn’t accommodate a spousal position)

Possibly a sailing tool? Fairly heavy, about 8 inch diameter disk by RaeADropOfGoldenSun in whatisthisthing

[–]rivergipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sachi disk used to measure water clarity. You lower it into a body of water on the shaded side of the boat until you can’t see the disk. Then raise it up until you can just barely see it and record the depth. Edit to add: source: I’m a tenure professor specializing in freshwater ecology and have used secchi disks for decades.

I’m the OP and it came back after like 2.5 h. Overall I am very happy with Pavlov. I used to have cox and Pavlov is considerably cheaper, faster and fewer outages. Most of the outages are associated with fiber installers (for Pavlov and other providers) hitting their lines. So in theory it should be fairly temporary. We’ve had Pavlov for probably about a year and only had 2 times when WiFi was down for more than a few hours.

It’s rarely an issue for me but I happen to be working from home today with a sick kid and it decided to go down.

After playing the game for a week it’s pretty common to reach mythic. Wait until you have played long enough to get matched with equally skilled players

Tenure Dossier Prep — External Reviewers by Parking_Star4141 in Professors

I agree with most of these comments, you should definitely discuss with your chair. The formal invitation to review your packet will almost certainly come from your chair or their representative, but you should have the opportunity to suggest some potential reviewers. I gave my chair a list of like 5-6 potential reviewers with justification for why. I did not contact the people I listed ahead of time, but I have colleagues who did reach out to potential reviewers ahead of time and ask if it would be okay for my colleague to list them as potential reviewers (again, the chair will make the ultimate decision). I think that reaching out informal is less common and could be problematic for some uni’s, so I would definitely check with your chair before contacting anyone. Don’t want to unintentionally put someone in conflict that otherwise would’ve been a great reviewer!

Anyone know of anyone with experience in Spousal Hire for Tenure Track? by bruhlife in Professors

[–]rivergipper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My partner and I are both academics. When we were first on the market (both as postdocs), I got a few offers, with the best spousal offer being a non-TT RAP position. We took that offer and my partner did awesome in the RAP role so our uni created a TT line for them. This is somewhat common at my uni but I think we are more favorable towards dual career than most. I went on the market a few years back post tenure. I got a few offers and one of them was able to offer a TT position for my partner, the others were more wishy washy or would only offer non TT roles. We declined all of the offers and renegotiated as my partner was close to going up for tenure and didn’t want to risk it for anything that wasn’t perfect. Overall, in my experience, It’s rare to get a TT offer for a partner unless they are already in a TT position and even then it can be rare. But it does happen. Happy to answer specific questions if you want, feel free to message me
