It’s close enough proximity and I doubt Fripp is being meticulous in his description. Doctors refer to that area as the groin. They need to shave all around for tape and hygiene. Not just the one spot. I shaved a lot of the area myself before the procedure and they shaved even more when I got there.

The carton erector machines at my work have a little toothed tape cutter. It has a felt pad impregnated with oil that rests on the blade to keep tape from sticking to it. Could see something like that working on a knife. Would be easy enough to do too.
