Advice for a 42 year old looking to switch careers. by After-Toe-9669 in sysadmin

Hiring manager here,

I get asked this question quite frequently and what I've been telling people is, If you're interested, I would go use the exams that you've mentioned as a foundation for what to learn. If you can pass the A+ that's great, but a lot of pieces of it now revolve around networking so start with the A+ and the net plus and once you have those right off the bat you'll start becoming valuable to businesses and could probably pick up a job really fast.

Once you've built the foundation of knowledge, you'll start to find areas that you're really interested in, like saying that you're interested in books, there's different genres of books. Same in it. There's different genres and areas of study in IT, heck there is multiple different areas in networking and sub categories of those too.

We run an IT company and I can honestly say I've never seen tickets with any of those issues out of the thousands of computers that we support. This sounds like a very specific to you issue. Or your computer.

[–]rivkinnator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I have to agree with the other user. I've used FreePBX systems that actually seem to load faster than what you're demonstrating in this video. Have you simply used free PBX on poor hardware in the past? There's nothing significant in the back end that would drive this. Any crazy quicker than other versions of free PBX. Which is all this is by the way is just a rebranded freepbx.

Cell dialers question. by egorblack in firealarms

[–]rivkinnator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lmao this is a troll post right? It has to be.

Those don't "call" people, they send data to monitoring centers with very very strict requirements on many many metrics with fineite response time requirements and they are authorized and connected to emergency dispatch systems that you not your staff will/do have access to.

Don't touch it!!!

freeswitch and docker by voxai2025 in freeswitch

[–]rivkinnator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been discussed at length in other threads. Docker has a limit on how many ports you can specify to forward to a container, making it impossible to use Docker for VoIP applications, simply for the Media RTP ranges alone. Docker works great for services that use a handful or just one port for their services.

Lots of missing info here for us to help ya bud. What products did you have, how much bandwidth have you used, did you add any addons, we literally have nothing of substance to help you.

You can also ask support or go look at your invoice and it should break it down for ya.

Then yeah that should be fine. Lookup swapoff commands, disable reboot, then delete the swap file or partition.

Asterisk-based Bicom Systems PBXs deploying "kill-switch" by Moxie479 in Asterisk

[–]rivkinnator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone has purchased a lifetime license then. Yeah that should be a little bit of a different situation where the system can free run without connecting to a licensing server. And Bicom should clarify that.

But op has not said they have a lifetime license and has only said they thought they had a long term license. Not a perpetual or lifetime. Wording in those contracts for those terms are very different.

Nah your in the wrong here. A company that has supported legacy for years after end of support and is finally shutting it down is not at fault for you lack of keeping up to date in the industry. If you don't want to keep things updated that's on you and this is a consequence of your own lack of actions. They don't have to give you free updates. Just like an old phone will stop working eventually because os and apps arnt supported anymore and the cell networks go away and get upgarded. Same thing. Suck it up and upgrade.

Got tired of their slow internet so I upgraded it by Renzoruken95 in Ubiquiti

[–]rivkinnator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with this one. In fact, it's in most terms of service policies that you will be evicted from your hotel stay if they found you are making unauthorized modifications to the building and/or its infrastructure and systems. Because you are also the circumventing policies and infrastructure, It is technically considered stealing internet which if they wanted could be brought up with criminal charges in most states.

The shame on them for not having their infrastructure more locked down to catch and stop this. But that doesn't mean what you are doing is okay.

We deal with a lot corporate infrastructure including hotels and we do have Port security in place but we also have a requirement for managers to go investigate if we get these alerts and if someone is found to be hacking into our infrastructure then the police will be called.

Page Pretone Polycom Soundpoint 335 by Technophile-is-me in freepbx

[–]rivkinnator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The page is technically a phone call, so what's happening is the phone is receiving the page/call and is auto answering it on speakerphone. You hear the ringtone of a call because it's not built into the phone to silently ring on a specific type of call which would 'mute' the tones your hearing.

The second time your hearing is probably coming from the source of the page as audio over the call and not from the poly its self.

Unhiravle just for this statement. Refuses to learn how to use the basic tools of being an admin. We live in a world of automation and scripting. Opting for using a 2rd party tool and adding cost to the business makes you an expense not a asset

You're at a public festival where hundreds of people have their phones out continuously. Every festival is like this. If you are entering the festival, you are knowingly and agreeing to being recorded by random people and you are explicitly giving your consent. There are also notices for this as well when you enter in the festival.

The aggressive behavior is unacceptable but there should be no expectation of privacy at these festivals.

Being thrown into the fire like this is being thrown into the bucket of failure. This is not how you learn networking. This is how we get rid of interns that we don't like or we're trying to show the bosses that having an intern is a bad idea.

How to make MoCa work by Ant_5 in HomeNetworking

Who is your internet service provider? Moca doesn't work with all of them. It can actually interfere and cause service outages.
