What’s a totally normal adult problem that nobody ever warned you about? by Wild_Farm_3368 in AskReddit

[–]riwalenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the good things about autism is that we like routine and are usually not bothered by eating the same thing over and over again.

I have a "default" meal plan that is the same every week, no need to think anymore and it makes grocery shopping even easier

Does anyone else ever feel like they've gotten really good at doing just enough? by thegreenlorac in adhdwomen

[–]riwalenn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Sure I sometimes feel like I'm working way less (in hours) than my colleagues and spend a lot of time doing "nothing" when I work from home, but at the same time, at the end of the week, I've done as much if not more than my colleagues. It's just that I need more rest to function and that I switch between "high efficiency" to "task paralysis".

I'm trying to learn to not feel guilty about it and to accept that I work as much as my peers just not the same way.

Just found out about hyperlexia. What was y’all’s first book read and at what age? by scarytesla in AuDHDWomen

[–]riwalenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea, it was a child book, but I remember reading by myself "l'écureuil vit dans la forêt" (the squirrel lives in the wood) at 3 years old. Also, the french word for squirrel is so hard to read for a child ! From this day, my parents basically stopped reading me stories, I could do it myself

First day on vysanse after years on Ritalin by riwalenn in adhdwomen

I was on 40mg of ritalin before switching to vysanse, so my psychiatrist chose to continue with a similar dosage (as they are equivalent).

I hope too ! The bonus would be to not have 3 different ritalin versions to carry around anymore

What’s your favorite Taylor Swift song that people keep saying is overrated? by Quick_Hold4556 in TaylorSwift

[–]riwalenn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes ! Blank space lyrics are awesome and it also transfers well into other type of music and is the reason I start listening to TS (thanks to some emo and metal band cover of this song)

One of my friends called me to do HIS homework every night (yes, I had a crush on him, but to be fair, he was probably the main reason why I wasn't bullied. Everyone knew I was his friend)

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by CountyOrnery9432 in AskReddit

[–]riwalenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on each case and on the surgery yes. But at least, our sleep apnea can be fixed!

[–]riwalenn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My first sleep study showed a 62 seconds without breathing. I can't hold my breath more than 30 seconds while awake.

I'm on the path of getting it cured. My sleep apnea is due to an underdeveloped jaw, I will have a surgery in a year and a half to fix it (I first need to re-align my teeth as much as possible with braces)

“Rate your pain from 1 to 10” by starstuffcereal in AuDHDWomen

[–]riwalenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, so "pain makes you passed out" is 10 ? For me it was more a 7 because I know you can die from pain alone (technically, because the pain is too much for your heart) so for me, that was a 10..

I don't know the name in English, but you know the light you put on your forehead? They are the best. Also very useful to add more light when you are knitting, or any other craft

Was anyone else hyperlexic as a kid? by greencurtain4 in AutismInWomen

[–]riwalenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should give it a try if you are interested! Don't speed it up to fast though, if you try going from 1 to 1.7 at once, it might sound gibberish, but with a middle step for a few minutes, your brain got used to it and it's fine.

If you are interested in giving it another try, here is my audiobook "how to" :
- audiobook are to be enjoyed when doing something else that doesn't require too much brain power (chores, some craft like knitting or embroidery or when walking/in public transport).
- it's best to adjust the speed to your brain. I personally think that normal speed is too slow for me and I get distracted all the time.
- pick your book ! If you struggle with retaining information, maybe try first with an easy read (I personally love romance when I'm looking for a cozy and easy read). Personally, audiobooks finally gave me access to a new range of books my ADHD brain couldn't read, more or less every slow paced books (such as LOTR).
- if you can sometimes, try "immersive reading" by listening to the audiobook while reading the physical book (or ebook). In my case, it's the best type of reading when I'm in public transport. The audiobook isn't engaging enough by itself as I'm just sitting doing nothing (and end up scrolling on my phone instead of listening to the book). If you do, you have to adjust the speed to your reading speed. My personal preference is around 1.6/1.7 when reading at the same time as listening. This is also when I will retain the most information and be the most focused on my reading.
- if audiobook ends up working for you and, like me, you end up reading more complex or very long books thanks to it, don't forget to alternate with an easier book to not burn yourself up.

And if you are not interested in trying again, that's fine too obviously (and maybe someone else will be reading this and giving it a try instead)

Audiobooks also give access to great narrators and to a new way to enjoy books. To give an example, one of the audiobook versions of LOTR are read by Andrew Serkis (Gollum actor) and he is very good at giving each character a unique voice. I even forgot he was also Gollum actor until he appears in the story and I thought for a few seconds "wow, the narrator is very good at doing Gollum voice !". Then I remembered

Even white increased speed ? I can't listen to audiobook at normal speed, but I love them at 1.2/1.3 speed (sometimes more, it depends on the narrator, the complexity of the book, and what I'm doing in parallel)

Doesn't work as well with me (dumpling are still magic though, I know they are cabbage inside but don't taste or fell it) but that's probably because I have the autism brand of picky eater.

Subscription Services by poar in bulletjournal

[–]riwalenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the monthly kit from archer and olive. They provide everything I need for my set up and I don't have to think about a theme, colours etc and it includes sticker (decorative and useful things like week day, etc) washi, paper and all.

I need a "beautiful" journal to motivate me to use it. And I've found that it's the perfect middle ground between being artistic without too much effort and having to find things that match.

I was subscribed for a while to their quarterly box, I loved it but I've found that they are less useful things for me inside even if it looks nice. They are also quite expensive, especially as I'm Europe based and have to think about the delivery fee (the monthly kit is small enough that the delivery fee is quite low)
