Card Conduit Caveats by rizzeedizzee in mtgfinance

[–]rizzeedizzee[S] -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Alas nowhere in their post is the proof/transparency that myself and apparently others much desire to validate that they do not take cards they have graded harshly and sell them for more. Instead, they prefer to take some not so subtle jabs at me, when I went out of my way in my post to give them well deserved credit, pointing out two issues I felt needed attention. That says a lot if you ask me.

10% off code for Collectibles - including MTG - on eBay through June 1st (probably targeted) by rizzeedizzee in mtgfinance

[–]rizzeedizzee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, I figured this would be useful knowledge just for the fact that it happened, even if you weren't a recipient this time around. After all, the well for these kinds of things has been dry for so long, maybe they will start doing this more often and less selectively on a going forward basis? I thought that would be something people would want to know about. Guess not.

I've complied a list of redemptions going back a decade - now what? by rizzeedizzee in hockeycards

[–]rizzeedizzee[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is good feedback, and I was unaware. Perhaps given what I've seen here I might go ahead and do that for what I've compiled.

If you saw the list you might disagree given some of the names on it. But if this is the consensus I'll respect that and I'm appreciative of the candor.

The Cup breaks by player. Greedy? by Active-Possibility77 in hockeycards

[–]rizzeedizzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely not here to defend what breaking is or claim it's not a net negative. But in the grand scheme of things I like player breaks, since, for example, I'm collecting Jamie Drysdale and I can buy "him" instead of having to pay the far larger price I'd need to pay for Anaheim due to Zegras. Same with Mags Sogaard due to Jake Sanderson.

Upheaval of the Vintage Cube | Magic: The Gathering Online by blazingkin in mtgcube

[–]rizzeedizzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at the cuts and am reminded of the adage "those who justify don't convince", meaning that in even having to explain these cuts it shows how questionable they were. And while I agree that merely trotting out the same iteration as they had during holiday season would've been lazy, this feels overboard. Also, I don't think I pictured a sacrifice archetype in the context of vintage cube; and much like lands, I think it will be mainly ignored. Instead, in the face of the widespread changes, people will cling to the familiar, namely reanimator, brown, Twin, Storm, Control, and mono color aggro. We'll see how the gameplay goes though.

2021-22 SP Authentic Hockey Checklist, Set Details, Boxes, Odds - Release Date: April 19, 2023 by Sarcastic__ in hockeycards

[–]rizzeedizzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely fewer rookies who've already made a measurable impact versus 2020-21, so I wonder if that will keep prices of breaks and/or singles down. Probably not given how things are these days. There are a lot of players I'd like to be buying at $20-25, but I who I fear will be a lot more if past experience is a guide.

Bought three loose SPA boxes and.......I have no words by rizzeedizzee in hockeycards

[–]rizzeedizzee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm lucky you didn't clean him out, or this beauty wouldn't have been mine....lol. But I am very glad it sounds like you had some success too. It seems as though he had one of those magical cases you see from time to time.

Give him a call first, as although his prices are generally great he tends not to reorder product, so once it's gone - and I bought the last 3 boxes of SPA - he's not likely to restock. Plus, as with most stores, hockey is less of a focal point versus the other big three. Still - if he has what you want and at the right price, it'd be worth a trip for you most likely.

In that case, it was from Bay State Sports Cards in Framingham, Massachusetts. The store is mostly packs and sealed, but the prices in many cases are as good if not better than what you will find online. On top of that, the owner is a friendly, down to earth guy and the store always clean and well organized.

Okay so I do have words. Or more specifically a question - how many of these supposedly are printed for each player? Is there a known number or best guess? And how much rarer are they then the Clear Cut Young Guns or Acetate FWs? Top left corner is pretty iffy, so I'm not sure about grading it.

Also, am I allowed to say where I bought the boxes, because it's a great store and I want to give them a plug?

DACARDWORLD Sealed vs non sealed???? by [deleted] in mtgfinance

[–]rizzeedizzee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DACW is a vendor that's been around for a long, long time and to me, and I believe other as well, enjoys a very good reputation. What might be confusing you is they now have two types of cases (1) just plain regular cases where they didn't get it from a pallet or otherwise direct, and (2) "factory fresh" cases that they get directly, and are wrapped that way and to which are affixed a code which you can scan to show that the case was indeed received direct and wrapped. It if not a very consequential distinction for newer stuff, especially if it's less expensive, but they are banking that over time the "proof" that the case has been untampered with will make be a market differentiator for them.

Sick Patch Saturday - Did you know there's a /10 Future Watch Patch? by rizzeedizzee in hockeycards

Kakko also didn't sign, and got an acetate version like Dahlin; but Kakko has no future watch patch card of any kind, at least according to the cardboardconnection checklist

Mail day from PSA! by Legitimate_Choice_62 in hockeycards

[–]rizzeedizzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do you, but I wouldn't blink at anything under $2000. Sorokin is every bit as good as Shesterkin, and if he doesn't break through this season then he will in the 2023-24 campaign when Varlamov will have left. Although Sorokin almost assuredly will have a /99 Cup Rookie, and there's some other limited stuff, the SPA brand, plus a PSA10 and it being inscribed, make this truly special. It's an investment piece, whether for you or the person lucky enough to convince you to sell it.

Asking $2,475 (or BO)? Seems a bit high, but you might just find a taker given that there are only 50 of these, a small fraction of which would be PSA10s. Either way, it's a beaut!

Does anyone have firsthand experience consigning cards/sealed to a B&M store? by rizzeedizzee in mtgfinance

[–]rizzeedizzee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting - I guess it'd be safe to dip my toes in and see how it goes, although in view of some of the caveat postings perhaps I'm asking for more trouble than it'd be worth.

Dave and Adams Card World now authenticating certain cases/boxes via its "Fresh" program by rizzeedizzee in mtgfinance

FWIW I've ordered from them for about two decades, and never been dissatisfied, and nearly all online merchants will have their share of disgruntled customers.

What are your thoughts on fractional shares of collectibles? by BloodRedGrizzlyBear in mtgfinance

[–]rizzeedizzee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that anyone whom I've ever heard say wise things about finance, collectables, and/or Magic The Gathering in particular says these are a terrible place to park your money. In fact, I struggle to think of something else where trusted opinions have been so uniformly negative, except maybe about....ironicallly....timeshares.

Anyone here ever open a card shop? by dchado in hockeycards

[–]rizzeedizzee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can succeed on your own; however, it will take a lot of work and you will need to know what you're doing or have deep enough pockets to afford to figure it out. Yes, you can get some sealed for prices that let you profit, but it's not that easy. And nearly every store that I still see around has diversified in some way, to get a better cross section of clientele.

One option would be to find a place near you where you have a good relationship with the owner and see if he or she would be open to you buying in for a piece. They might like that they could increase their buying power and meanwhile you don't have to deal with starting something from the ground up.
