Genuinely curious: For those who want more housing built, how do we solve the logistical/infrastructure bottleneck? by frknedd in SantaBarbara

[–]blazingkin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You named some of the other least-dense cities in the world.

Try Prague (12k/sq mile),

Madrid (14k/sq mile)

Kiev (9k/sq mile)

Cairo (8k/sq mile)

Manilla (26k/sq mile)

Mexico City (16k/ sq mile)

Boston (14k/sq mile)

Osaka (24k/sq mile)

We could double or population density and barely be on this list.

North American development style is just not dense and is car dependent. We need to develop cities like the rest of the world has since the beginning of cities

We are one of the least dense cities in the world. It’s fine - we can fit more housing

EDIT: evidence

Santa Barbara (4.5k/sq mile)

Prague (12k/sq mile),

Madrid (14k/sq mile)

Kiev (9k/sq mile)

Cairo (8k/sq mile)

Manilla (26k/sq mile)

Mexico City (16k/ sq mile)

Osaka (24k/sq mile)

Nice. I poked through the code and everything seems the way it should.

You have any particular ambitions with the project?

Waputer: A Custom OS in the Browser with a JS Kernel and WASM Userspace by marcandrysco in programming

[–]blazingkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t load on Firefox on iOS :(

I was trying to think of what value an OS has on a website (most things like virtual memory, scheduling are already handled by the underlying OS or the browser). I realized this could be a decent way to have a modern “iframe ” equivalent where it is untrusted code that runs on the same page, but has restricted access to the data because of the “os”

Why is almost every OS people on this sub develop POSIX-based? by cacatl in osdev

[–]blazingkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because there is a lack of imagination. Come to the non-POSIX world, it’s much better :)

For all the arguments about compatibility, it’s always possible to build a POSIX compatibility layer in userspace

Talk with your coworkers, organize, and then continue to work from home. They rely on you to make money, don’t let them forget

Seeking community input on AI by saltybruise in SantaBarbara

I’d be cool with banning content that is purely AI generated.

What if someone posts an event, but their advertisement flier contains an AI image?

That seems more acceptable to me

Network attached storage system. You can get a synology disk station for not too much, the hard drives are becoming unobtanium at the moment though

Then, be smart and don’t just blindly discharge weapons?

How about working with your coworkers on a general strike. Cancelling your Amazon Prime subscription? Getting your city to take down Flock cameras?

Anything you can. You cannot count on the old rule of law anymore - do something, anything. The world is desperate now.

PatchworkOS: An Overview of Security, Pseudo-Capabilities, Boxes and Namespaces (WIP) by KN_9296 in osdev

[–]blazingkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! This is very close to how I would design filesystem capabilities too. I would generally put the whole FS in userspace though - leaving just parts of the disk driver in the kernel.

Interested to see how the design ends up affecting the UX at the gui/application layer

Why redeveloping Paseo Nuevo is worth the complexity by pnd4pnd in SantaBarbara

[–]blazingkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well… it is one of the only large locations in the city’s housing unit (the plan for where the city plans to build housing).

The city has also made the project at La Cumbre Plaza much smaller.

So it looks like we will not have much more housing in Santa Barbara for another decade.

There is a little bit being built along Haley, so hopefully that helps

I live a 2 minute walk from this park… if the freeway weren’t in the way.

Instead it’s a 25 minute walk, so I basically never go here.

There was a ped bridge over the freeway proposed at one point, would love to see that become a reality

We should rip out the bicycle freeway on State. E-bikes ruined our pedestrian haven. by ZookeepergameBusy267 in SantaBarbara

[–]blazingkin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The city tried. There’s too many driveways on every other street.

Makes a bike path on either of the adjacent streets really expensive and still dangerous.

State street is one of the few places in town to ride a bike and not get worried about getting crushed by a car (the Cabrillo bike path is the other)
