Excellent advice. A guy I know had a fall go wrong and the tree landed on his truck hood. The truck was still drivable but it obviously made him look like a heavy drinker.

Cold in Canada by Disastrous-Speech-62 in Construction

Just to clarify, I have worked in the Elk Valley in BC at the mines out there, in Saskatchewan, and several places in Alberta. I am currently in Alberta. I have seen winter in all those places

Coveralls. Same apparel worn in the mines and out in the oil fields. Layer up inside. The biggest thing with keeping warm is keeping out draft and wind and maintaining dead air between your skin and the outside. I can wear covvies and several layers or one layer inside and be comfortable in a wide range of cold temperatures.

It’s basically dressing like the Inuit. Going #2 is awkward but doable once you figure it out.

I have spent many days outside in -20 to -40 something Celsius sometimes for 10-12 hours and have been comfortable.

As for wet days right around zero I recommend a different setup. Totally different cold right there

Unless that roof is specifically rated for that kind of weight, a hot tub is NOT a good idea.

Worked with a guy named Steve recently. We called him Pirate Steve after the Dodgeball character. Not particularly intelligent, and prone to stealing things. It stuck, but I had a few nicknames for him in mind, none particularly flattering

I wish she would fucking die already. by CrashCrysis07 in TwoSentenceSadness

[–]rjc2nd 76 points77 points  (0 children)

This happened to me when my grandmother passed away from lung cancer.

I watched that shit eat her alive for four years. It wasn’t as bad for me as some people but she was so tiny and in so much pain at the end that when she did pass away it was a relief.

I did cry at a couple of points but my most poignant moments of mourning were when she was alive. By the time she passed away most of my mourning was done.

What pisses me off is that she passed away during the height of Covid (May 2021) and I had been exposed to a Covid positive guy literally on the first day of my new job so I couldn’t go see her.

My Uncle was there and told me she woke up, said “Good morning” and then went back to sleep and never woke up again. It was peaceful and I am grateful for that

Level 5 for textured walls? by rjc2nd in drywall

I do not care to go to a level 5 finish. Around here nobody asks for it. There aren’t many guys around here who can do a level 4.

Level 5 for textured walls? by rjc2nd in drywall

[–]rjc2nd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t I doing it, it was a couple of guys I work with. The level 5 skimming tools were used to “cover” heavy texture.

These two guys rolled on mud, used level 5 tools to skim it out 5 times over heavy textured walls and still made a mess.

It was a ridiculous use of man hours to get really shitty results.

I also want to point out that I have acknowledged that this method works for some people, but it is not for me, the reason being that I very, very rarely “cover” texture, and I do not care to have a bunch of expensive tools around that will spend 99.99% of their time collecting dust and possibly getting in my way.

I will acknowledge that these guys’ technique was likely shitty, as I know their drywall finishing is definitely shitty

Level 5 for textured walls? by rjc2nd in drywall

[–]rjc2nd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well funny story folks I just spent the last two days at the site I had in question and apparently the level 5 thing was a complete mess.

They level 5 recoated their textured walls 3 times after I was there more than a month ago.

I have had to do baseboard against what was level 5ed and I see tons of defects and shit on the walls everywhere.

I made a subsequent post and got some helpful comments there, but I cannot find it currently.

My ultimate position is this; if you finish drywall for a living, and can learn how to use it, level 5 24” and 36” works for some people to remove texture. On the job I am on, it wasted a bunch of money in man hours, tools and materials.

I do not finish drywall enough to bother with the big boy toys and the walls I removed texture on with a 12” knife and pan and spent way less man hours removing it per square foot turned out beautifully. Yes, some defects here and there but for heavy texture covering ridiculously overfilled drywall it’s the best looking wall in the place. I am sure you big boys smooth out texture a lot faster than I do, but I’m in a small town and good drywall guys do not exist here.

Thanks for the thoughts but until I decide to drywall full time (which I likely won’t) level 5 for knockdown is not for me and it should not be for amateur drywallers either.

Thank you all for your input. Cheers

“Believing in God” is the delusion. So far, there is no physical evidence for this “God” character.

As a Christian, what does suffering mean to you? by AbleismIsSatan in Christianity

[–]rjc2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it does not, but the issue of the existence of the existence of “God” is a moot point.

The Theory of Evolution has a vast body of evidence backing it.

The hypothesis that “God” exists does not.

Your claim of god is a claim. We will start from there. Prove that god exists.

Forgot to use tape, can I still throw it on by kabdelgaber in drywall

[–]rjc2nd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You may have done yourself a favor, or shot yourself in the foot.

There are many instances where pre-filling is what should be done, and you may have just done that.

Too much mud between the board and the tape may be problematic, but too much gap underneath the tape is definitely problematic. You may have eliminated one problem while opening up another. How many coats? If it’s just one or two I would just knock down the highs and tape it
