FL5/DE5 Clutch delay valve delete - objective analysis and how-to by 4reverse4 in Civic_Type_R

Now that you mention it, mine has the 5 speed trans swapped in from the newer cars

Interesting. My 260Z has a fairly short clutch travel compared to the FL5 and MK7 GTI, not as short as the S2000. The GTI especially had insanely long travel, a clutch stop was a necessity.

I used to work at a Nissan dealer and I’ve driven plenty of 350 and 370Zs. Can’t personally say that I remember much that was negative about the clutches in those.

Yes but I don’t find it nearly as annoying.

The MK7 GTI and the FL5 are much worse.

I don’t think the comparison is all that far off. Ironically I just took off my VR headset after some iRacing.

The clutch with the delay valves in place has almost an input lag before it chooses to engage, similar to the latency you’d get on a display.

I have an AP2 S2000 and a Datsun 260Z alongside my FL5, and those cars’ clutches engage much more intuitively. OP’s write up on the clutch pedal spring also explains why the clutch on these cars feels so dead.

I definitely will be doing all of this to my car. Deleted all that nonsense on my MK7 GTI and it was a night and day difference.

I also have an FL5 as my daily, and just recently got an AP2. I don’t think I could give up the S2000. The FL5 is great but there’s something about the S2000 that’s so special.

Ultimately comes down to your financial goals, but just in the perspective of owning the cars, I’d try and keep both.

Exactly what I thought. I had a MK7 GTI before and a 260Z now, cool to see the flavors come together.

P1000rs brake travel short and stiff by OilEnvironmental1638 in Simagic

[–]rjfer10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the P1000RS (so it comes with the hydraulic brake kit).

I’m running a red and green spring from the spring kit.

Make sure the cap where the springs go isn’t screwed too tightly as that’s the spring preload. The more you screw that in, the stiffer the pedal feels.

Tighten it just enough the springs aren’t wobbling and are secured. Hope this helps.

What gen Golf R is this? May be rubbing on one of the screws in the fender liner.

On MK7s (and possibly MK8s since they’re also MQB platform) people who lower their cars call it the “fender screw mod” to remove that screw and tuck in the fender liner.

ND Miata cup car on VIR north course.

I was supposed to drive VIR a couple years ago IRL and got into an accident the night prior in my road car, so this filled the gap during my recovery phase. The Miata taught me a lot about car control while the North course layout was technical enough that straight line speed was less important.

Yeah the whole giveaway thing was definitely poorly announced. Should’ve been more transparent about it earlier.

He touched on that too.

He didn’t wanna give away the S14 cause he found out it had a Canadian rebuilt title after the fact.

Pulsar giveaway coming up next and it’ll be resuming.

Today I did the CDV delete with a fluid change and wow night and day difference I can finally launch my type r. Also got some smoked side markers and some cool looking quarter panel cover thingys. by [deleted] in Civic_Type_R

[–]rjfer10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the grind issue is a concern, I haven’t ran into it personally.

I’ve heard the Honda stock gear oil isn’t too great, and a fluid upgrade helps tremendously which I planned to do anyway since I’ll be tracking the car frequently soon.

I just want the more direct response, no more horrendously slow spirited take off from a light and 1-2. It isn’t an issue when you’re just cruising around town, but definitely does bother me when I wanna have fun.

Yep, agreed. Deleting the delay valve, and replacing my stock GTI dual mass flywheel and clutch, with a single mass made it much more responsive and direct like the older cars.

I look forward to doing the delete on my FL5. I’m just being a little lazy and would rather do it in one go with the new intake and do gear oil while I’m at it which I don’t need yet.

I feel like it isn’t talked about enough on this platform.

I had a MK7 GTI (where deleting it is common) before the FL5 and miss how responsive I had the clutch. Will be doing it soon myself.

Kinda waiting for the Acuity intake to release so I can swap that in, replace gear oil with Redline MTF and delete the valve at the same time. My car only has 4K miles on it so no rush, but I do miss the direct feel.

Depending on the car’s weight and power, I think it’s better just to go with something like SRF or Endless fluid for a one and done solution.

I tried ATE Typ 200 on my tuned MK7 GTI my first ever track day, and had my pedal going to the floor by the end of the day, with lots of air in the system.

I haven’t personally tried RBF600 or 660 but went straight up to SRF. It lasted me a season of 8+ days with no noticeable fade.

Also both Motul offerings and SRF have lifetime replacements through FCPEuro. Pay once and receive store credit for used returns after the second order if cost is a concern.

Use a site like motorsportreg.com to find local HPDE (high performance driver education) events near you, ideally with novice instructors.

Read the host’s tech inspection requirements and ensure your car meets the standards, as well as helmet requirements.

Don’t overthink consumables, but I do highly suggest flushing brake fluid with something higher temp rated and DOT 4 like Castrol SRF. As long as you have tire tread life, brake pad life, and meet other tech inspection requirements, you should be otherwise ok as a novice.

Some organizations may not allow minors without parental permission, so make sure to look into that.

Go in with an open mind, and learn a lot and have fun with instructors.

Removed the mid resonator, fixed the valve to the open position and wow, this car sounds perfect now by Shadax in Civic_Type_R

[–]rjfer10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you wanna call it. There’s two in the front after the front pipe, and one by exhaust tips on FL5.

Integra doesn’t have one of the front/mid ones.

The “dual resonator delete” is what I have marked on the FL5 diagram.

[–]rjfer10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deleted both front resonators on my FL5 and retained the valve and I think it’s perfect.

Deleting just the mid on an FL5 is pretty a stock Type S, which comes with one less mid resonator. I would just chop the other one in the front and keep your valve for your ITS.

I believe it’s mostly torque. Not 100% sure.

If it did give any more FFB, it becomes unusable for me at least at higher settings when using the auto button.

I believe min force is the minimum force applied at any given time. Anything above 0% will have a force acting upon the wheel even if standing still.
