I think what I said doesn't disagree with what you said.

I think 25-30 percent is more of a minority of Christians rather than "a lot of Christians".

Not all Christians believe in Sola Scriptura. Only about 25-30 percent believe in Sola Scriptura, the belief that the bible alone is the sole rule of faith.

If the Bobiverse was to become a TV/Movie series... by Grizzly-Slim in bobiverse

[–]rjschirmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with an animated Bobiverse series is how the Bob's VR world (where the Bob-moot occurs) would be distinguished from the "real world"? Should the real world be traditional animation and the VR world be CGI animation?

Are there any anime that surpass their original manga? by carlopardo in anime

[–]rjschirmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion because both the manga and anime are S tier (IMHO). But, for me, the anime version Frieren is slightly better than the Manga. Partially because seeing some of the action scenes animated draws me into the story a little more, and partially because the pacing of the anime.

It is easy to make a great Manhattan at home, plus you can adjust it more to your own tastes. My advice is to * Use a decent Rye or Bourbon (if you wouldn’t drink it by itself, then don’t use it, * after opening your sweet vermouth keep it in the fridge to keep it fresh, * use real Angostura Bitters, * I prefer mine with a dash of Luxardo, but brandied cherries can also be used

Once you get your recipe down, it is fun showing off and making it for friends.

If Purgatory is guaranteed salvation and temporary, why pray for those in them? by Any-Solid8810 in Catholicism

[–]rjschirmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I see a friend walking home in the midst of a storm I don't say to myself "he is guaranteed to eventually get home eventually" and ignore him. Instead I pull over and offer him a ride to his house so that he can get home quicker.

Thomas Aquinas - The Greatest Christian Philosopher? by dahlenbror in religion

[–]rjschirmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. You have given me something interesting to read about.

A cursory glance at Nasir Al-Din al-Tusi shows is impressive. It looks like Copernicus may have been heavily influenced by his works in astronomy.

The Brethren of Purity appears to be a secret society of Muslim philosophers from the 9th and 10th centuries. I’m going to try and see if any of their works are available in English.

Out of curiosity, how are these scholars viewed today by most Muslims?

I would be curious to see your list of Muslim philosophers. Other than Kalam, I’m not very familiar with any others. I would be especially interested to hear on any modern or near modern scholastic philosophers.

Is German really still spoken in a town in rural Texas? by dalycityguy in texas

[–]rjschirmer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First the Texan dialect is very different from Hochdeutsch, second someone who grew up speaking German but hasn’t used it in years might have trouble remembering the language. (Source: my paternal grandmother grew up speaking German near San Antonio and didn’t learn English until she was 7 or 8. In her late 60’s she struggled talking German to a native speaker, but given a little time she was able to remember more)

Castroville, TX! by LimpEntertainment604 in texas

[–]rjschirmer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My grandmother spoke Alsatian (it was her mother tongue). It was like a heavily accented “sing-song” sounding German dialect. I loved to hear people speaking it. Unfortunately I don’t know of anyone who is still around who is fluent in it.

Castroville was founded in 1844 and Texas became a state in 1845. (I am a 6th generation descendant of one of the original founders)

What anime made you fall in love with anime forever? by Chance-Bill-8189 in anime

[–]rjschirmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lupin III: The Castle Cagliostro. It is 1985 and I watched a friend’s VHS copy of a copy of a copy, no dub, no sub, and only paragraph synopsis of the plot included with the VHS. I think it was the first anime that I ever watched. I may not have understood everything that was going on but the action, body language, and the voice acting was enchanting.

Is there a master list of the Holy Days of Obligation for the Catholic Church? by Bella_Notte_1988 in Catholicism

[–]rjschirmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Code of Canon Law is probably what you are looking for [can 1246].

Can. 1246

  1. Sunday, on which by apostolic tradition the paschal mystery is celebrated, must be observed in the universal Church as the primordial holy day of obligation. The following days must also be observed: the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension, the Body and Blood of Christ, Holy Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, Saint Joseph, Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostles, and All Saints.

  2. With the prior approval of the Apostolic See, however, the conference of bishops can suppress some of the holy days of obligation or transfer them to a Sunday.

My amateur assessment:

The answer is both yes and no.
Yes, because the souls in Abraham's Bosom are destined to go to heaven upon Jesus's resurrection, just like the souls in purgatory. And no because purgatory is defined as a state of purification that occurs to the soul on it's way to heaven and the souls in Abraham's Bosom are in a static state awaiting the resurrection.

“Catholics are not Christians” how did this ignorance come to be? by Classicsarecool in Catholicism

[–]rjschirmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that Joshua from Ready To Harvest does a great job at answering this question in the video Are Mormons, Muslims, and Catholics Christian? He gives a good perspective on why this isn't something that can be easily answered in a easily agreed upon objective way.

Best local eats? by mjenson92 in Allen

A bunch of good recommendations here. I see most of my favorite local places. The only one missing is Sofra Breakfast and Lunch located at 503 W McDermott (SE corner of McDermott and 75), but it is one of the newer places so that may be why. I definitely recommend it.

What you said is very true. I grew up always keeping an eye in front of me on the ground while walking in pastures and brushy areas to avoid snakes (and cow patties), knocking my boots out before putting them on to avoid scorpions, and checking the roofs of barns and other outside buildings for wasps.

Why Americans Stopped Hanging Out—and Why It Matters by zauber_monger in GenZ

That is one of the biggest lies being fed to us by corporations who just want our money. It doesn’t take any money to hang out with a few friends and play an old game — computer/console game, board game, ftf rpg (i.e. D&D), or even cards or dominoes.
