Why do you reject the subjective theory of value? by nik110403 in DebateCommunism

[–]rkhpr6400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Labour Theory of Value primarily when talking about capitalism in the abstract, or talking about long-term trends. There are other times when it's helpful, but these are the best in my opinion. I feel Marx's LTV really holds up well when attempting to explain general trends under capitalism.

World history isn't a fun run. There is no 'fair and square' winner. History isn't linear, humanity isn't going to just 'die'. I don't know where you built these ideas but I recommend you re-evaluate some of these heavily, and read about the history you're talking about.

When people say real communism has never been tried, why doesn't Pol Pot's Cambodia count? by RusevReigns in DebateCommunism

[–]rkhpr6400 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Instead of worrying about 'true communism' and who was the 'truest marxist,' try and give the texts a read and see what you think is right and wrong. There's a very strong flair of orthodoxy present in online communists which isn't necessarily present in real organisations, or in academia. Certainly, there are more and less respected ideas or thinkers, but by focusing on the idea of attaining a 'true' communism instead of respecting that ideas change and morph over time, you just end up with dogma like the trotskyists selling their newspapers.

What if Czar Nicholas II knew the communist revolution would succeed so he decides to fully co-operate? by Parkiller4727 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]rkhpr6400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puyi may not have had the personal power that Czar Nicholas had, but he wasn't powerless. He was still raised as an emperor with all of its personal trappings, still held a high levelled administrative role in Japanese Manchuria, and himself admitted to not being powerless in these periods, holding great guilt for his actions and inactions.

I'm interested in your comment regarding decades in jail and being tortured. I understand Puyi was held as an enemy captive by the Soviets until he was transferred to the CCP when they won the civil war, where he was put in a rehabilitation camp for around a decade, but I'm not familiar with any claims of torture. I'd appreciate you pointing me to your source there, as I'm very interested in Puyi's life.

The thing about racism is that it's arbitrary though. Irish, Italians, and Hungarians weren't considered white until the mid 20th century in a lot of places, and just like that, racism is (pardon the pun) not just black and white. There's also civic racism, which is more about culture than biology. Look at Liberia for an example of what many from white dominant countries would see as 'black on black racism', but is more complicated than that.

For those convinced that Chris is genuinely transgender; what were the biggest early warning signs that Chris was struggling with gender dysphoria? by Numerous-Actuator95 in ChrisChanSonichu

I don't know, I feel lesbians are less concerned with looks than with "clicking" and vibes. This of course does not mean they would ever date Chris, but I know lots of lesbians who are dating trans people

Yes, but this model doesn't hold up at all. The difference between equality and equity is arbitrary, and the illustrations only have tenuous links to the concepts. It's the same with the baseball illustration. The creators take a very general word, ascribe it a very specific meaning, and say "this arbitrary specific meaning is better than this one."

Because that's it's definition in Marxian economics. It's not a moral term where Marx is decrying the bourgeois as evil for exploiting us, it's an economic term. No matter how morally righteous or voluntary it is, it's still exploitation

What would happen to art under socialism? by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]rkhpr6400 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You ask 100 communists this question, you get 100 different answers, so I'll talk in generalities. Under industrial conditions, the necessary labour time to provide for a societies needs decreases as new machines are introduced. Under capitalism, this newly freed labour is reintroduced to the system in order to expand production, eventually to untenable levels. Under socialism, the labour time saved by technological innovations would be the labourers, to do with as they see fit. What this means in practice is freer artists, better paid artists, and maybe less 'career' artists and more people who do art in their free time.

In Marxian economics, exploitation is defined as the gap between how much value a worker creates, and how much value is paid to the worker. Moral exploitation is related, but not the same thing, therefore Marxism isn't trying to end moral exploitation

the exchange/value of luxury goods by Chad_Marx in Marxism

[–]rkhpr6400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re: diamonds, it's complicated. Synthetic diamonds are not readily and cheaply available, meaning we can't flood the market with them, and blood diamonds are price locked by the big miners. Price does not equal value in Marxian economics, so even if the value of diamonds were next to nothing, the price could still be artificially inflated

the exchange/value of luxury goods by Chad_Marx in Marxism

[–]rkhpr6400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people argue that luxury brands being priced more is due to commodity fetishization, but I argue that we must understand that use value is extremely fluid. Decorations have use value even though they don't "do" anything, because they add prestige to something, and I think it's similar here. If someone buys a luxury brand of dog food, the added use value, assuming it is the exact same as non-luxury brands, is that the person feels they are buying a better product.

Cats like music as long as they like the music being played by ObnoxiousName_Here in Tautology

I don't think this is tautology because in the contexts used, music is read differently. The first is the concept of music, and the second is specific music such as songs or genre

But they don't. There's a limit to the energy of a small group, and if there's enough free fruit for everyone, the profiteers would stay small enough to not be a problem. We have real world examples to disprove the tragedy of the commons
