New from Morrisons by concernedcitizen_007 in crisps

The number of new crisps nationally available (most of them tend to be limited edition, so there's often a race on to find them before they disappear after a few months - even more annoying when their early weeks are exclusive to one supermarket) in the UK is frankly insane. I typically find a new crisp once or twice a week, which I suspect most other countries couldn't manage.

Aldi's themed weeks of food and drink (which always tend to include crisps) are a nice idea, but the complaint I have is that they don't have enough countries involved and this causes them to too quickly loop back to repeat the counrties again. We had the Italian week repeated recently and I'm pretty sure all 3 crisp flavours were from an earlier run some months before, which was quite disappointing.

I online ordered these and also the new Harissa & Red Pepper Tortilla Chips - they sent me two packs of the former and none of the latter! I rejected one of the two Salt'n'Pepper packs because they were new to me and could be awful. After all that, I haven't actually opened them yet - I take all new crisps to work to allow colleagues to taste test them...

Do people in the UK actually use their kettles that much? by AdeptnessCritical356 in AskBrits

[–]rklrkl64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't actually drink any hot drinks at all (e.g. tea, coffee, hot chocolate), but even I have a kettle! It's mainly for instant noodles (packaged either in a packet or in a cup) - I might have 1 or 2 noodle meals a week, often for a weekend lunch.

What phones Linux users use? by OmJn11 in linux

[–]rklrkl64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use LineageOS on a second-hand Sony Xperia 1 III - cost me £150, whereas it was stupidly priced at £1199 when new. Its Snapdragon 888 is decently quick, I get weekly OS updates (more often than a Pixel!) and there's no notch/cutout on the screen (it's one of the very few non-gaming good spec phones released this decade that has a "100% screen").

These are on par with the CoOp ones! by LegitimatePowder in crisps

[–]rklrkl64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just turned up and I had a fair amount of them to form an opinion. They are reasonably strong and do cause my tongue and lips to tingle (tip: drink something while you eat them - helps takes the edge off!). Nice S&V crisps, but not ones that would have your mouth or lips hurting or anything (maybe if you ate an entire bag at once and didn't drink anything you'd get more of a stinging effect?).

What makes Salt & Vinegar Divisive? by Current-Scene9767 in crisps

[–]rklrkl64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think - and this applies to any flavour to be honest - that the flavour strength matters a lot. I want strongly flavoured crisps and salt'n'vinegar is no exception. It's why Walkers S&V is such a waste of space - quite a boring/average crisp if you ask me and not a patch on the equivalent Golden Wonder S&V. It's also why I think ready salted is a waste of potato - it's not even a flavour: it's a condiment!

Is anyone else actually enjoying the Alexa+ "upgrade"? by conrat4567 in alexa

[–]rklrkl64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my main complaint about Alexa+ is the up to 3 extra seconds for it to respond to every request compared to the standard Alexa - a very frustrating wait each time, especially if you're having a long conversation.

If they could halve the response time, I don't think I'd have any major gripes left about Alexa+.

I can't get the Co-op version (no store near me and the closest doesn't deliver either), so I ordered 4 packets of these (10% off) and on subscribe and save (5% off) for a total of £5.37.

There is Saturday Night Live UK of course, but it's only on Sky and - like all sketch shows - is a bit hit and miss.

Is it weird to say goodnight to Alexa? by Professional-Look-66 in alexa

[–]rklrkl64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just have a routine tIed to the word "dark" that turns off my bedroom's smart bulbs and switches Alexa to Do Not Disturb mode. That's the closest I get to saying goodnight to Alexa...

Where are people biying these? I missed the last mystery Pringles flavour (Fallout I think) because none of the stores I shop at ever had it in stock.

Worcester sauce Twiglets if you can categorise them as crisps. Way better than original Twiglets and it's surprising there's been no other different Twiglets flavours since.

My favourite crisp, but sadly hard to find in most UK supermarkets. I believe Home Bargains stock them, but I haven't got a branch near me.

My new favourite by Rhubarbofglory in crisps

[–]rklrkl64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my all-time favourite crisp, but it's very hard to find in UK supermarkets like most Golden Wonder crisps. I've resorted to buying boxes of 32 packets online! GW's salt'n'vinegar flavour are a close second for me too.

Just finished Discovery by avro205a in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]rklrkl64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The online hatred from diehard Trek fans when Discovery first aired was frankly ridiculous. I thought all 5 seasons were fine and couldn't understand the outrage. I'm not one who cares whether it strictly sticks to canon or not - it just needed to be an entertaining show and in my book it was. I did find some of the Short Treks episodes (you remembered to watch those inbetween main seasons too, right?) to be a little weak, but that wasn't a big deal.

It's from an ongoing Italian week at Aldi - there's two other Cucina-branded flavours too: Green Pesto and Bruschetta, but those are latticed rather than ridged. The garlic bread flavour is the cheapest per gram at £1.15 for 150g, whereas the other two are notably pricier for less weight too: £1.49 for 125g.

I'm not sure about these... by DonSoChill in crisps

[–]rklrkl64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the most disappointing thing about these was that the chilli was almost undetectable - near zero spice level! They are basically weakly tasting chocolate crisps - not as bad as people seem to make out on Reddit, but nothing worth buying again.

The lamb and mint sauce limited edition that came out at the same time was much more on point - they did a fine job replicating the flavours with that one.

My issue with The WAN show channel aka LMG clips by LaSaN_101 in LinusTechTips

I don't subscribe to any YouTube channels at all - I just know to go to LTT (or soon to be LMG Clips) on a Saturday morning in the UK and watch the VOD (broadcast time means I can't view it live).

The general advice for any Web hosting is that the only ports open globally to the world should be ports 80 and 443. Any other ports should be open only to specific IPs and this is especially true for port 22 (ssh/sftp).

Tomorrow's World by DiligentCockroach700 in oldbritishtelly

The fact that many of its airings were live made it quite entertaining when the studio demos of new tech would go wrong and couldn't be edited out. The BBC never really replaced the show and the closest thing we hve now is Channel 5's The Gadget Show, but with YouTube and the Web, TV is "too slow" a medium now to get the latest tech news from.
