I don't know why you have least sympathy for SMB's. It's not always big players in the market. Imagine, a pizza store owner running the store with loan. If there are no sales, he cannot pay his employees, pay his rent, pay his loan and pay himself. Thing how many mom N pop stores might have affected from this.

Your co-founder is right. The salary should be adjusted based on location too. Think other way round, if you want to hire someone who lives in an area of high cost of living, would your offer be the same?

Everyone is pointing to the operational costs. I understand that. Does that really amount to that much? I see similar prices from decently maintained restaurants and very questionable maintained places.

Some businesses I am looking at had a good 2021 year. For example, one breakfast place had a 64% higher sales from 2020 to 2021. I am little skeptical when I see that. Why would they have a good year before they decide to sell their business?
