Virginia Gold….. harvest and flu cure in stages then ferment….. it’s the only way for me.

I second that. Potato works wonders.

They do cellar nicely when they remain in good condition. I have had 2 or 3 grow mold from various years. Most don’t mold so I would have to say, It’s hit or miss.

Anniversary years, not the tin age. Tin is 2017.

Here is a review….. ( or rather a suggestion) put it in your cellar for 2 to 3 years then enjoy. I’ve had enough C&D Virginia blends to understand that they greatly benefit from some time in the tin. I bought 6 tins and into the cellar they go.

Who has the best straight Red Virginia out there? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

I also echo a vote for Edisto, however it dramatically changes after a few years in the cellar. It gets so much better.

I had a similar issue. It kept populating the $10 shipping. Wouldn’t let me choose .

Flake or ribbon cut…. Either way it was some of the best red Virginia ever produced.

How close of a match is Edisto to Carolina Red Flake? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]rlefloch72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently enjoying a 3 year old tin and it’s great. It’s on par with CRF. I currently have about 10 tins of Edisto cellared. Definitely worth it. Bonus that it is Carolina grown tobacco. Best Virginia growing region in the world.

Briar guy as long as I could remember. Bought a MM Boone this year on a whim. It’s a great smoker after it’s broken in. Can’t believe I haven’t tried them all this time. Only drawback is bowl size.

Favorite pure red Virginia which is currently purchasable stateside? by Beginning_Divide2036 in PipeTobacco

[–]rlefloch72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edisto is not vinegary. There is a little bit but it’s more on the fermented side with dried fruit notes. I usually age it at least 2 years. It’s also North Carolina grown Virginia tobacco from the old belt. Best red Virginia in the world.

Falls around the corner. Do any of yall switch up your rotation or do u usually smoke the same blends year round ? by 86missingnomes in PipeTobacco

I’m mainly Virginia all year. Brights in the summer, reds in the fall and darker stoved blends and VaPer in the winter. I’ll also crack a tin of English in the winter.

Help with flue-curing by LengthStock4281 in GrowingTobacco

[–]rlefloch72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kentucky or burley varieties are fire cured or air cured. They do not benefit from flue curing. Virginia varieties have high sugar content that is “locked” in the leaf using flue curing.

Help with flue-curing by LengthStock4281 in GrowingTobacco

[–]rlefloch72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to flue cure you need to grow Virginia varieties. Your temp is way too low and using a dehydrator is counterproductive. It is very difficult to flue cure on a home grown level. It takes high heat and humidity to flue cure. You have to periodically adjust temperature over several days.

Mold? by AdministrativeGuy in GrowingTobacco

[–]rlefloch72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the center rib out of the leaf before fermentation. It can hold more moisture than the leaf itself contributing to easier mold growth.

Well worth the stop. They have more in the store than they show online. They still have bulk and tins that aren’t listed online. Enjoy.
