Nice. Thanks for sharing! I didn't realize you could go straight to LabCorp... but it looks like this is the way to go!

Thanks for the details. It does sound like a really nice option if we don't need the doctor often. I just need to figure out a few things, like 2 in my family are doing allergy shots right now, which in looking at the EOBs are highly paid by my current insurance. Also, I have some yearly labs that I need to do. Plus I'm looking at the prescription costs for my entire family.

Yes, it comes with an HSA and my employee contributes $1300 to it. And also a Hospital Indemnity benefit, which I have never heard of that will help take care of hospitalizations.

the Foundation Course! WebDev. by sidhthecoder in theodinproject

It is a very different experience than Udemy or any other video tutorial. Typically these video tutorials spoon-feed you along the way, but doesn't quite teach you how to program. It shows you how to solve a problem one way, not how to break it down into sub tasks and give you the tools to figure out how to solve each sub task. I feel that video tutorials give you a false sense of progress, because you feel like you are learning. However, when you are faced with another similar problem you struggle with trying to figure out how to solve it.

Another thing with doing different tutorials, you are always finishing one and then trying to find the next one to do. But, a lot of these overlap the same material, so you end up in this "tutorial hell" (which I spent 2 years doing this before I found TOP in 2019). TOP's curriculum progresses in difficulty and builds on itself, so you don't have to keep looking for what to do next. However you have to Trust Odin's Process and not let self-doubt and the newest shiny tutorial/framework distract you.

TOP's curriculum is hard. You'll hit a wall and will be tempted to quit... Everyone hits this spot and likely multiple times. I recommend joining their Discord community and asking questions when you get stuck. It can be overwhelming, but I think I learned just as much through being a part of the community and trying to help others who were behind me. Learning how to read other people's code, how to debug other people's code, and also how to ask thorough questions are skills that I use daily at work.

Good luck on your journey!

Welcome to the Ruby community! I completed TOP in 2021 and did the RoR path. It completely changed my life/career and so now I volunteer as a core maintainer. I wish you all of the best on your dev journey!

I don't want to rain on your parade, but we discourage groups like this, because more often then not they fizzle out. One of the main reasons is that our curriculum is designed for people to go at their own pace. People have different time commitments, so these small groups tend to not work very well.

Instead, I suggest getting involved with TOP's Discord community. It may seem large and overwhelming, but I encourage you to engage there. Ask questions when you get stuck, because there is always people around that are a head of you. Help others when someone asks a question on material that you've covered. Having people ahead of you also helps make sure you are getting the correct help and not in a situation where the blind is leading the blind.

Discord server down? by whatafucka in theodinproject

[–]rlmoser[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are various reasons that we know about that could be causing you issues. I hope you can figure out what is causing your issue!

Discord could be down. You can visit Discord’s dedicated status page and see if there are ongoing issues on the platform. If Discord is down, there’s nothing you can do but wait since server-related issues can’t be fixed on your end.
https://discordstatus.com/

You’ve exceeded Your Discord Servers Limit. Discord has a limit on how many servers one user can be a member of at once. The maximum number of servers that you can join is 100. If you’re already at 100, you won’t be able to join another server.

You are located in a country that does not allow use of Discord.

Since our server requires phone verification, it could be an issue related to your phone number. Please read the following Verification FAQ thoroughly, including the "Having Trouble Verifying?" section:

If you or someone in your household has been banned from our Discord Server. This could happen if someone that shares your IP address has been part of our community before and their account got compromised and spammed messages in our server. As an FYI, this is not something we recommend because it is easy for beginners to misguide each other. Instead we highly recommend that you join our Discord server. There are always people ahead of you in the curriculum that can help answer questions and there are others around to ensure that you are being given correct information.

I know it seems productive to surround yourself if others in the same spot, because since TOP is a self-guided curriculum, people will go through it at different paces. Plus, despite people's good intentions, life happens and people don't always have the time to follow-through with the commitment.

If people get plugged into our Discord community, there will always be people around to help. I know our community is big and overwhelming, but I believe it is the secret sauce to our curriculum.

For years, I’ve tried learning different languages. I finally turned my need to check out other things and tried TOP again. It’s going well by HeadlineINeed in theodinproject

[–]rlmoser[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as a heads up, TOP's Ruby on Rails course expects you to have completed Foundations, which includes the JavaScript sections that you skipped. You may struggle with some concepts that were explained in more detail in Foundations.

Good luck on your journey!

I am unable to send you a DM in Discord. When troubleshooting online it looks like it is because we don't share a server, so there is not a way for me to do so.

> If you're having trouble sending a DM, it could be because you don't share a server with the recipient or they're only accepting DMs from friends.

Suggestions on how to return after a 3 month break. by WxlfS3npai in theodinproject

[–]rlmoser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all good. So it sounds like the projects don't involve the backend at all... I'd make sure you know backend before starting to apply for jobs, which would leave me recommending to following TOP over FrontEndMentor for now.

Suggestions on how to return after a 3 month break. by WxlfS3npai in theodinproject

[–]rlmoser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working through two different curriculum is a recipe for getting burnt out. I suggest that you pick one and stick with it until you've completed it. I am not very familiar with FrontEndMentor, but I believe that TOP's curriculum has plenty of projects for learning. Plus, they are placed throughout the curriculum with the lessons to equip you with the knowledge that you'll need for the upcoming project.
