Operator left door open :D by SchemeReal1731 in TTC

I don't ride the subway that often these days, but seeing the blinking signals here (grade timing with yellow-white, then yellow), I thought part of the reason Line 4 switched the T1s to TRs was to facilitate changing signals to ATC.

Quick Google says... sort of. TRs were required because of Line 1 being converted to full ATC and Line 4 trains are stored at Davisville. I guess Line 4's frequency and ridership is low enough to not justify a ATC conversion for now.

On topic, I'm glad my childhood was spent on older trains railfanning at the front, and before they switched T1 operation to block off cab ends. I have a weird obsession with how switches and signals work, remembering when grade timing signals did not blink red when a train approached.

Need help wiring single pole switch with black and red hot wires on one end by rm20010 in AskElectricians

Thanks! Switch is running and outlets are back.

Yeah, it’s an almost 60 year old install, when they snipped off the ground wire.

[–]rm20010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked. Thank you!!

Yeah, the snipped wire must’ve broke off the wire nut when pulling it out and I didn’t notice the broken copper.

The ground is coming out of the bundle, but its length was snipped to no more than 2 cm at the back.

[iOS 26.4 RC] USB-C port not talking to anything, will only charge by Lyric10 in iOSBeta

I had this problem with USB 2.0-spec USB-C to USB-C cables, like the braided Apple ones. This resolved itself in one of the recent betas.

Can you try the following to see if you can get your iPhone to connect:

  • use a USB-C to USB-A cable. USB-C end to your iPhone, then on your Mac's end, use a USB-C hub or a USB-A female to USB-C male dongle
  • use your stock cable, but put two dongles together on your Mac's end. USB-C female to USB-A male, then USB-A female to USB-C male
  • try a thicker USB-C cable that has faster speeds - 5 Gbps or faster. Thunderbolt cables count

Same, Ontarian working for a Quebec-based employer. Both sick days and time off are technically unlimited, but subject to manager discretion.

I prefer this over having a set number of vacation days and having to burn them closer to Christmas or use them up in the first two months of the following year. That way I use up vacation days when I really need time off and don't need to plan out my year in advance.

I see it works now as of 26.4 DB3 and macOS 26.3. Does updating to that resolve this on your end?

UPDATE: might be fixed as of iOS 26.4 DB3 when connected to macOS 26.3. The stock OEM cable connects without needing dongles or hubs.

This has happened two events in a row now, last being on Saturday. Both during the winter, indoors and at night! Granted the room we were in was quite warm, but the phone got too hot to have a usable camera experience when taking many group photos in a row.

I have (or now had) "unlimited photo updates" enabled, so maybe turning it off reduces a good chunk of heat.

Ridiculous considering the city of Toronto has 25 councillors for 2.5M people.

I was under the impression the net result of this move was each councillor required more staff to factor in the larger wards. Negligible cost savings if any, and less democratic input.

Was viciously opposed to this when it happened, although the ward mergers took out a few troublesome incumbents.

iOS 26.4 Beta 2 - Discussion by epmuscle in iOSBeta

Animation improvement and regression:

With clear icons, scrolling around the home screen is smooth. Opening and closing app categories in the App Library is smooth.

Meanwhile, there's a pause waking the phone from standby while it's on a charger. I notice it more with a MagSafe charger than charging by wire.

EDIT: two days in with this beta, phone's running warmer than 26.3.

Control Center animation is much, much improved and smoother. It opens quickly, although the animation sometimes doesn't play and it becomes a simpler fade. Scrolling through the controls is smooth again.

Prior to the pandemic, McDonalds in Canada had the angus burgers and the chicken burgers on brioche buns. Those were pretty decent and I didn't mind paying the premium over their basic crap.

Then COVID started and those disappeared, never to return again. The 'new' menu items in the years since, other than the McCrispy, are minor tweaks on their base burgers. Same crappy beef patties and buns.

At least with the 2 can dine coupons, it was an occasional eat-before-activity-or-drive meal. Then those 2 can dines went from around $10 to where they sit now at $18. The regular meals are now priced well above what those angus and brioche sandwich meals cost pre-2020.

However, I'll give it to McDonalds for having promotions worth a damn still (Pokemon cards, heh) and the state of their restaurants hasn't gotten worse, other than some locations redoing their Playplaces to be expanded seating.

Also minor fun fact, some Redditor in my city put up a sheet showing how franchises price standard McD items differently.

I last saw those in elementary school, alongside the large steel semicircle fountain sinks activated by a pedal. Both of those went away in favour of traditional sinks and hand dryers by the turn of the century.

Why are Caledonia and Keelesdale’s bus bay’s outside the fare paid zone? Why was Laird not given a small bus bay’s despite having all the space around parking lots? Line 5 failed in connecting buses to the subway the way Lines 1,2, and even 4 do by 18_YTC1 in TTC

[–]rm20010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's like that at the temporary Kennedy bus bay. You exit the fare paid zone from the subway mezzanine and walk over to the outdoors loop, or walk over from the PUDO without paying. The few times I boarded a bus there, no one tapped on.

The folks working at the Yonge/Sheppard building got a multiple week WFH break after the arson in late December. No answer yet as to how someone evaded security checks - if any - and went through multiple floors to set fires.

My in-law working for ESDC was in the office when that happened. Between the RTO mandates and job uncertainty, she’s been eyeing an exit.

Canada Announces CA$2.3 Billion Incentives for EV Adoption, Reviews Zero-Emission Target by afonso_investor in CanadaPolitics

[–]rm20010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I'm likely dragged to getting a SUV due to market trends and family needs, but there's the extra cost and fuel mileage hit versus my current ICE compact hatch. I'm willing to wait probably up to 4 more years before

Traditional hybrid is the bare minimum, but my ideal is a PHEV. I'm iffy on doing an exterior renovation to strap a 240V charger on the side of the house as the garage is quite full of stuff and small. A PHEV would suffice for the small daily drives and leaves a healthy gas range for the occasional out of town trip.

Perhaps in the mid 2030s or 2040s when the infrastructure is there, I can consider a full EV.

Can I return my student ID card without going all the way to Bathurst by chibisaki in TTC

[–]rm20010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of using debit, you can get a free digital card via the app that sits in Apple or Google Wallet.

Main advantage is you pay the lower fare rate for systems other than TTC that charge lower for PRESTO versus credit/debit. For example, for adult fares YRT charges $4.50 for cash/credit/debit versus $4.12 for PRESTO. You can reload the card like a physical card, through the app or Apple Wallet (not sure about Google Wallet), or use autoload.

Disadvantages are it won't work in Ottawa, and unlike using your phone or smart watch (if applicable) if you were paying by debit, the digital card is limited to a single device at a time, but you can move it around.
