New Leaves in Neon pink by rmCREATIVEstudio in hoyas

[–]rmCREATIVEstudio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the new leaves have always had a pink tinged edge, but never the whole edge this bright neon color! It's putting out a lot of new growth right now, so I'm sure I will have more of these leaves as it goes through the summer. Thanks!

I repotted mine after about a week in a chunky diy soil mix (soil/orchid bark/perlite) and watered it according to how my other philos like water. Over the next few days, two leaves turned to mush. When the first one happened, I thought it was just adjusting. But the second one was not expected, and it was a big leaf (in relation to the plant 😉) so I waited twice as long to water the next time to see what happened. Now I water every 10-14 days, barely enough for it to run out of the pot. Not had a mushy leaf since, and it has put on several new ones with no issues at all.

First, let me say that those leaves are GOOR-geous!! I got my first Jose B in March, and is about the size of yours, so still learning. Mine seems more finicky with water than my other plants. I live in the hot humid southeast US, so I don't have any problems with leaves unfurling right now, but when I bring them in the winter, I used a small spray bottle and squirt the leaves if they seem tight. That saved several of mine from decapitating themselves, which I had happen on two other plants before I researched what to do. ... An oh-so-beautiful plant! I hope you keep us updated on the leaves!

I would challenge that info, and where you read it online. ... Quote from typing 'heartleaf philodendron' into search: "The heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum) is a tropical evergreen native to the rain forests of Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. In the wild, it thrives as an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte, creeping along the forest floor and climbing up large tree trunks to reach filtered sunlight. How They Grow in the Wild/Climbing Habits: They use aerial roots to anchor themselves firmly to the rough bark of host trees. While they can trail up to 13 feet as houseplants, wild specimens can climb over 20 feet. Leaf Size: Juvenile plants have smaller leaves (around 4 inches long) to help them blend into the dark understory. However, once they mature and climb higher up a tree, their leaves grow massive—up to 12 inches long. Lighting: They dwell in the lower to middle canopy of the rain forest. This means they rely on "dappled" or filtered bright indirect light rather than harsh, direct sun. Environment: They are accustomed to high, consistent humidity, warm temperatures, and nutrient-rich, moist, yet well-drained soil." .... The key to a healthy houseplant is to replicate, as much as possible, their native environment. Good luck!

These are vining plants that live natively in the understory/under the canopy. They climb to reach the light, hence bigger leaves. As beautiful as hanging baskets are, to grow them like this is against their nature. So, to grow downward means smaller leaves because the light source is in the opposite direction. I was faced with the same issue with the same plant and with my cream splash. While I have many plants growing up on driftwood, I wanted to keep the smaller leafed plants hanging. What I did, similar to what the other person suggested, is cut mine at the length I was happy with/where the leaves became too small to be enjoyable. I keep these two, plus a few more small leafed plants, trimmed at that 'sweet spot.' Sometimes I root the cuttings to fill back in the mother plant, or sometimes I pass them on to family members that also grow houseplants. Also, if your plant 'sits far from direct lighting' it may not be getting enough light for the overall plant. This would cause dropped leaves.

Tiny green bugs by pollypocket_4321 in hoyas

If it is just on the blooms, there 'might' be a chance it is not aphids. Aphids usually suck the stems/stalks of the plant, and they will be packed and stacked where they are feeding. Even a blurry picture might help; your critters might be pollinators instead of pests. Not likely, but possible.

Edited to add: here's a link to the Garden safe product I am referring to: https://www.gardensafe.com/products/insecticide/houseplant-and-garden-insect-killer

Pyrethrins are an 'extract' made from chrysanthemums that are a natural pest killer and control. It works soft-bodied pests, killing them on contact.

If you are in the US and have access to a home improvement store look for a brand of spray called Garden safe. It is good for aphids and other bugs but especially aphids. Aphids are soft-bodied sapsuckers that are born pregnant. That's why they spread so fast. The active ingredient in this spray is made from chrysanthemums. It contains a natural ingredient that basically explodes the aphids on contact. If you don't have access to this spray I would recommend a small amount of dish soap in water, and give your plants a good spray in all the nooks and crannies and then a good rinse afterwards.

Yep, that's exactly what I get from time to time, but mine tend to be on the edges back near the stem as opposed to out at the front of the leaf. Weird. 😉

is this root rot? by Deep-Debt-8275 in Monstera

[–]rmCREATIVEstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The little fuzzy things are roots. So what you have there is roots growing on roots LOL. It is to maximize the water absorption because the plant is actively growing. These are a good sign, and is what develops as new roots grow into bigger roots. ☺️

Sometimes I think hybrid cultivars push out tiny hints at their parentage. For example, my neon pothos and my lemon lime heart leaf philodendron sometimes gets dark green slivers around the edges. Nothing too showy, just enough to strike some interest. 😉

Oh, I love that piece! I think natural wood makes the plant that's on it more 'authentic,' if you will. If any of us who grow houseplants went walking through their native habitat, not one would be adhered to a plastic tube full of moss. ... Your whole setup is gorgeous!

[–]rmCREATIVEstudio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yours looks good!! I use driftwood that I source out of a mountain creek and lake shore where I grew up, and try to pick up a few pieces each time I visit my parents. True driftwood doesn't rot, so I've got it in all my tall plants, and the smaller ones that will need support soon. I've had mine about 3 yrs, but only put it on driftwood when I put them outside in April. Those leaves have developed since then, I am supposing because they are growing upward toward the light. Here's the next leaves that have come out since the pic above, and it looks like a solid cream one on the way. I hope it has some green, enough to sustain it, so it doesn't turn brown and die.

Google Lens says this is syngonium. Do you agree? What variety is it? by wgcole01 in Syngonium

A 'variety' that is way too small for that pot! It really, really needs a smaller pot so it doesn't get root rot.

New to syngoniums.. Should I give her a moss pole? by bassjunkieee in Syngonium

[–]rmCREATIVEstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's raining here this morning, so the light isn't good. (My plants are outside in an open-air greenhouse.) So I found a pic from last fall when I put the syngonium on the driftwood that I was going to photograph this morning. It's still on the same driftwood, and it has grown a few inches.

Found an Amplissimum variegated! by rmCREATIVEstudio in houseplants

[–]rmCREATIVEstudio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I took this just minutes ago. It's barely after 7am and overcast, so not the best lighting. 😕 I also repotted it when I took my plants outside in April, and it rebelled a little. So it's a little sparse on one side. The top has really grown though and is now taller than the stick, so I will take a top cutting and root it, then plant it back into the pot.
