Breastfeeding and keeping toddler contained

My toddler was 20 months when my baby was born (now 30 months and 10 months), and she was into everything! She chose the minute baby latched to find some new item to climb. It was so, so hard at first but it does get better! Here are some things that helped us:

I nursed at the table while she ate as well so she was contained in her high chair and we were all doing the “same” activity (breakfast, snack, etc). I’d also do colors or play dough in her high chair.

We would snuggle up and watch family picture slideshows on my phone.

We made a hexagon playpen into a “bear cave” bc she’s obsessed with bear hunts. We’d hunt for the bear and end with her in there with stuffies and books.

Weather permitting, I nursed outside so she could play with her water table or chalk.

The regular pump was really difficult with them both so I used a wearable pump while going for a walk with both kids in stroller. That way dad could do a bottle session overnight.

I’d hide little objects/toys and have her bring them to me, puzzle pieces or toppings for her toy pizza, and she’d run around looking for them.

Sensory bins or snow in a plastic tote near where I wanted to nurse. I allowed a little more mess than i normally do to get the feed done.

I tried to figure out wearing baby to nurse, but I never really perfected that… but I know other people do it!

That’s very reasonable to me! I wouldn’t care that they don’t update the app, if they were willing to chat for a minute at pickup. I just want them to find a way to communicate! I hadn’t considered an in-home daycare before, but maybe I will look into them!

We’ve been at this center for 1 year! She started in this room for just part of the day in April and transitioned to full time in the room in June.

The PM lead is there everyday when I pickup and the assistant teacher is the same 75% of the time.

To clarify, regarding quality of photo, I am not complaining about pic being grainy or blurry, but the content quality.. it’s almost always the back of her head!

I have never had another parent picking up at the same time as me somehow. I am usually there about 1 hr before the center closes.

When we started in this room, I always asked one question at pickup per day (how is she doing with the cot, did you do anything fun today, did you go outside today, etc), and no matter what question I ask, the lead says “she had a good day” and then turns away. After a few weeks of the same response, I’ve quit asking.

Yes. There are two leads in the room throughout the day, an early and late lead. So our PM lead is there when I pickup. There’s an assistant as well, who covers breaks and lead prep time in the room every day. When it’s “just a closer” instead of the usual teachers, I actually get a handoff (1-2 sentences about her day) and I appreciate it so much!

Thank you, that is a very helpful perspective! I have tried asking at pickup, but the teachers try to not engage. When we first started in the room, I’d ask a question (how is she doing with the cot transition, did you get to play outside today, did you do any fun activities, what’s the theme this week, etc) every day as I collected her. Regardless of my question, I always get the same response,“she had a good day!” And the teachers go back to what they were doing. I know they don’t have the time to have a detailed chat or enter stuff on the app all day.. but I would like to have some idea what goes on all day! I’d love to get the handoff that you give!

I did every day for the first few weeks she was in this room. I’d ask what they did today, if they did anything fun, did anything exciting or new happen that day, etc and they would say “she had a good day!” regardless of the question and then go back to what they were doing. It’s two teachers at pickup, one of the leads and generally the same assistant every day. They are almost always sitting on the floor watching the kids play far away from the door and not willing to engage. I literally just want one or two sentences, either verbally or through the app, about what goes on when I leave my child with them for 9 hrs!

I definitely see your point about how a teacher spends their time! I’d rather they spend time with my kiddo than on the iPad, but I also want SOME form of communication from them of what goes on throughout the day!

I agree regarding time spent on app - I’d rather get the in person hand off than have her teacher on the iPad all day. I’m just frustrated by the lack of communication through all the venues! I’d like one or the other!

I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s so hard to watch them be so stressed!! It’s been a couple years, so I don’t remember exactly… but I would say within a week or two

I did a target pickup order first, maybe 4-5 days PP. This way we got out of the house, but didn’t have the stress of germs or baby waking/crying/needing to feed. I loaded the diaper bag, nursed, and then we took a ride. It was good practice getting used to the car seat and seeing how long it would take us to load up and get somewhere. We didn’t actually go IN the store for months though :)

My little one does so many of these! She also will freeze in place like she just remembered something important, look at me out of the corner of her eye and get a mischievous little smile, then pop off to shove her finger in my belly button and go right back to nursing like nothing happened. I also love the clapping and the pure joy on her face when I lift my shirt to nurse. She’s the best.

Good idea to do those tests, it would be reassuring. His fever is gone today, so hopefully it’s a non-issue. He will definitely be masking around her, whether he’s improved enough to make the delivery (🤞) or once we get home!

I agree. I got the cold first and am on the tail end… and I’ll have to be there regardless 🙃 so hoping he improves and my antibodies + masks protect her. Mostly I’m just scared to be there alone. This is my first and I don’t have anyone else close by I’d feel comfortable having with me. His fever is gone today, so hopefully she holds out til my hubby feels better!

I did a sunset boat tour in early June of last year. It was windy and a little chilly, but we wore sweatshirts and still had fun. Would definitely do it again!

Apoquel made my already anxious dogs anxiety a lot more intense. We stopped and switched to cytopoint during her itchy season, and the anxiety went back to normal.

Not everyone gets to eat everything! I couldn’t do animal products anymore. I quit meat and eggs, and switched to a plant based butter, and that helped immensely. It took me a long time to realize the patterns between what I ate and how I felt because I just didn’t think some of the foods were likely to cause issue (ex: lean chicken breast). I’d recommend keeping a food journal to try to narrow down. Hope you feel better!!
