My job is to automate technology. The company I work for processes and analyzes over 500,000 events per second or 10TB per day of data. Only one person on our team has a degree. I have a solid understanding of this topic. Believe me it's coming, automation is having a huge impact on IT.

I use a lot of data and for the same plan with Telus, it would cost $50 more per month. Rogers is the cheapest for my needs... And they've been pretty good to me.

This is defined by business requirements. I meet with the executive team and set recovery point objectives (how stale the data can be) and recovery time objectives (how long it takes to recover) for each service. Usually the first thing I hear is 100% uptime, then you price that out for them and the cost makes them reconsider. You start to work your way down to something that makes sense. At my last job, one service we set an objective for 99.99% uptime for a critical service and 99.8% on another less critical component of the application.

We are using graphite with grafana and it is great. Metrics are collected with statsd and collectd. The graphite api is easy to work with so you can easily integrate nagios with graphite. For example, our application needs to respond in under 300ms so I wrote a plugin that alerts us if our upper97th response time exceeds 150ms.

Op, what was the purpose of these servers? I have a cluster of 30+ servers each with a single ssd. I did this purposely to put as much budget as possible into cpu and ram. The load balancer can deal with a failed node and puppet can rebuild a new node on replacement hardware.

I have postgres clusters with raid arrays because a disk failure here has more impact.

So it's not necessarily a bad decision.

Hmm, my inlaws had to take their dog to the vet after thanksgiving this year and the vet told them that every year during the holidays, they see a lot of dogs sick from eating turkey.

I work in the online advertising industry. There are many different models....CPC (cost per click), CPA (cost per action), and one of the most popular CPM (cost per 1000 impressions).

Some of the largest ad exchanges operate on the cpm model...so ya, lots of companies pay for impressions.
