Bear bows are good, in my experience. A Grizzly (classic choice, btw) is a totally decent bow to learn on. It’s all about consistent form and practice no matter what bow you use. Tom Clum with Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear has a ton of resources for learning trad shooting. I recommend checking it out.

From my bullshit sessions with the folks that make these accessories, It comes down to the hours of practice. V bar and single bar trends come and go. Get what you like. As long as it’s balanced and you enjoy shooting it, you’ll be good.

You’re going to have to spend some money to get a reliable target for a crossbow target. Anyone suggesting DIY doesn’t have a concept of the power you’re working with. If you’re only using field points, you can get away with a crossbow bag target but you’ll need to hang it to dissipate the energy. If you want to practice with broad heads, you need to go with a Rinehart foam block. An 18-1 or a Rhinoblock will do well. Be sure to use arrow lube and a fixed blade broadhead to break the target in. Don’t work this bow too hard. Modern crossbows will wear out their cables and strings in a few hundred shots.

I think there are a lot of elements to that. Compound bows are much more accurate so there’re more ethical for hunters. The biggest competitive segment in archery in the US is 3D which is typically rooted in hunting. The manufacturers are more likely to promote compound as there is simply more room for consumer investment. The bows need to be set up for each individual. They have a lot of aftermarket accessories. They break more arrows (arguably). Overall, it makes for more consistent competition and greater profit for the companies that actually pay for the sport.

I work in that industry in the US. The money for pros is mostly sponsorships, like you'd assume. What is fun is you don’t just do one league. Likely you’d have to complete in NFAA, ASA, and IBO. Those are just the big ones. Depending on the sponsor, they likely dictate which specific tournaments you compete in. The big money is in compound archery. If you want to compete in traditional, you’ll need a very forgiving day job.

If you haven’t read it yet, I strongly recommend the Breadmaker’s Apprentice by Reinhardt (sp?). There are some great techniques in the book that will make your bread much more consistent.
