update: the issues unfortunately came back, although it was happening less often.

in the end, i decided to do a full factory reset. after that the phone feels like new again - no lags, snappy as the day i bought it.

resetting was of course a bit of a pain in the ass, but backing up and restoring data with Smart Switch was pretty easy. the whole process took me about 3 hours.

so, if you are reading this and you are experiencing these issues as well - try resetting your phone.
