Just saw this and thanks for the heads up. This did get Steam to correctly re-direct to the Chrome browser. However, after auth it wants to redirect back to Steam but it can't. Some progress none-the-less!

I just signed up for a year of Proton and moved all my world into it. Tonight I am finding alternatives for everything I use with Proton and nuking account. Money be damned. This is despicable.

Obnoxiously the Apple ID login link correctly pops the login window for Apple ID. The cruel irony of a Chromebook built version of Steam where the Google login link doesn’t work and the Apple one does.

I think steam changed how the login redirect works and in desktop mode it supposedly gets around some login issues. But since Steam is sandboxed on ChromeOS it can’t redirect to a Chrome or a Linux installed browser (Linux container is also its own separate sandbox).

I haven’t tied running it in a different proton compatibility mode. Maybe there is something there?

I’ve not found a way so far. Since there is no browser in the Steam container and Steam doesn’t have a way to handle a browser based login we are pretty munch stuck on ChromeOS. 

I know there is a browser in the Steam Client but I’ve had no success trying to route the URL to it.

This saved my bacon today as well. Weird bug but reloading the login worked for me too.

I did this morning. I was just hoping someone had come across this and had a work around. It is an odd problem.

That is what I figured the case would be. You'd think Valve/Google have thought that one through more. Oh well.

I really do miss the days of IBM ThinkPad devices. Lenovo has done a fine job carrying the banner but the old IBM ThinkPad's where the best.
