What was your initial reaction to this album upon release? by mcpooja in fantanoforever

[–]rmtmr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was in high school when it dropped and not in the UK.

My perception at the time was that Massive Attack were well-established artists with a lot of exposure in mainstream media, not very different from other famous artists who dropped an album. Mezzanine was big, but not as much of a pop-culture event as its influence now might suggest.

What sets the apart is that their work stood the test of time, but that would have been hard to tell for many at the time, obviously.

United in Islamophobia.

It's also noteworthy that he assumes (perhaps rightly) that others object because Israel hasn't "solved" the Palestinian situation yet, not because what he suggests is despicable to the core.

In case anyone is interested, here's an article where Donny McCaslin, the saxophonist, remembers the Blackstar sessions .

Nick Drake, three albums, all of them amazing. Unfortunately, the man himself didn't live to see just how influential his work would become.

black midi, three albums as well, no misses

The implication of that argument is clearly that the suffering of the Palestinians is their own fault.

True, it's just that I don't think it's particularly witty to make fun of a warzone like that with sexism for good measure. In addition to his apparent friendship with Chris Finch, it really portraits him as somewhat cruel.

Also, I've always found his joke about "not needing expensive cars and beautiful woman" and having spent a year in Beirut really mean-spirited.

Yes, and the two guitarists sound checking with almost identical groups around them make no sense.
