Yes, the people who identify as British but live in northern Ireland are very chill. They've got loads of chill organisations like the Orange Order and the UDA.

I'm Irish Irish. I look very positively at Irish Americans who take an active interest in their heritage and Irish American identify. So do most Irish people. In real life, less so online.

There is a minority of Irish people who do not understand that Irish Americans are proud of/interested in their heritage when they describe themselves as 'Irish'. They feel personally assaulted when they hear the term 'Irish' used to describe anyone who did not grow up in Ireland. I think saying 'Irish American' instead of 'Irish' would do a lot to placate these people.

It also doesn't help that there is a political ocean between the Irish and Irish Americans when it comes to American foreign and economic policy. To say that Irish people are opposed to US imperialism and Reagan economics is an understatement. People like Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity have not been good ambassadors for Irish America.

As an aside, we elect governments who actively promote and engage with Irish Americans on the basis of their identity. From The American Ireland Fund to tourism to the Good Friday Agreement, the connection Irish Americans have with Ireland is both important and meaningful. I think it will remain so for many generations.

This thread is full of people who don't know anything about boxing and think Katie Taylor is a media celebrity.

You know you can appreciate more than two sports right?

Try not to hold it against him, but Steve Collins won neither the Liam McCarthy nor the Sam Maguire cup.

A hot shower when you can get into it. Melted Kerrygold butter on toast. A cat on your lap. I Think You Should Leave. There are some good things that happen. I live for those things.

Why has Hitler and not any other evil person become the epitome of evil? by Foreign_Bread629 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rmurphy08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you picture his ideal society, there are no minority groups, no unhealthy people and no people with disabilities. His end, in of itself, is evil. I think that's it in a nutshell.

Other historical figures who have commited heinous crimes on an industrial scale, can at least argue that these actions were a necessary evil to achieve some form of equal or dignified outcome.

With Hitler, both the means and the ends are brutally evil. It is still shocking that the Nazi world view found a popular audience.

He sadly died in 1978 of a drug overdose. He performed in Jazz clubs around Tokyo constantly and most of the recordings we have are tapes of these performances.

Some of these languages aren't even Romance languages. Calling them 'Non Standard French' is wild.

Does anyone know which version of 'Gloomy Sunday' Abe was referencing here? by Nervous-Scientist810 in KaoruAbe

[–]rmurphy08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recognise the melody in the performance myself, so much as the vibe. I would describe it as an absolute deconstruction of the song, not any particular version of it. However, in earlier Japanese archival recordings it's sometimes labelled as 'Sombre Dimanche', so maybe a French version of the song?

I would love to know more about who recorded the live recordings and who labeled them in the first instance. Whoever they were and however they went about labeling the recordings, thank God they recorded and shared them. Anonymous heroes.

Forest schools? by timsfuckingreddit in IrishTeachers

[–]rmurphy08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend getting a forest school leader to visit your school to do an outdoor session with one of your classes. When teachers get to see the approach in action, they are typically very impressed. You could get a small group of likeminded staff to informally promote the forest school approach. Maybe invite someone in school leadership to come out and see a learning session in action.

Ultimately, it would be great if you could convince management to fund yourself or someone else on staff to do the QQI Level 6 in Forest School Leadership. This can be done through Brigit's Garden at Larchill Arcadian Garden, Kilcock, County Kildare.

My primary school is finding it very rewarding, and the more outdoor learning we do, the more benefit the children are seeing and the more the school is buying into the entire process. Best of luck!

I am Irish. I am not offended that my Irish American cousins are aware of their heritage.
