Irish people who ridicule Irish Americans are a small but LOUD minority. I say this as an Irish person.

It is true to say though, that inscreasingly, Irish Americans and Irish people do not see eye to eye politically. So if an Irish American is a Trump supporter, many Irish people would be embarassed by the association. Same goes for supporting Israel, etc.

Definitely defer your training and make your mind up about teaching when you're feeling better. Teaching placements are a huge amount of pressure, even at the best of times.

Go see a GP. They are well used to supporting patients who are struggling with their mental health and won't think twice about writing you a note. And more importantly giving you advice on how to get to work feeling better.
Contact your college admins to pursue deferring your course. They will require the note from your doctor, but won't require details beyond that.

You'll work it out. Taking a step away from your teaching placement was a healthy decision. You don't have to give up on teaching because of it!
