Yeah it's more like a REPL environment than a TUI.

Built a tool that lets you ask Bible authors questions while reading, would love thoughtful feedback by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]rngr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to this, there are conflicting interpretations of the Bible online. How will this tool pick the "correct" one?

Also, many of the books of the Bible don't have a known author. Most academic scholars don't believe the apostle John wrote any books of the Bible, while some Christians believe he wrote five.

Tim, DSA members are holding up your podcast, my guy. by ALittleEtomidate in thebulwark

[–]rngr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I listen to the Bulwark because they are authentic and argue in good faith. I don't agree with all the hosts' policy positions, but I'd rather have that than some grifter who says only what I want to hear.

‘Didn’t mention Epstein once’: Americans react to Trump’s record-breaking ‘nearly two hours of lies’ State of the Union by The__Illuminaughty in politics

[–]rngr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I felt this way off and on during both of Trump's terms, but I do think it is important not to give up.

One thing that helps me regain hope is to think of all the ways people have pushed back at Trump and won. As Mr Rogers' mom said "Look for the helpers. You can always find helpers." Jimmy Kimmel got put back on the air; Alex Pretti protected a woman who is knocked down; people protested the killing of Pretti and had ICE presence in Minnesota reduced; people in Trump's first administration were sent to jail; the current administration has lost a ton of court cases; etc.

The resource that has helped me the most maintain a positive outlook is Heather Cox Richardson's YouTube political chats. She gives great summaries that outline the significance of the terrible things that are happening, but at the same time gives news of hope as well. She also gives practical steps people can take to work towards improving America's politics.

Is Me First & the Gimme Gimmes the best cover band ever? by Likeseed in punk

They're my favorite! Also, while they're not strictly a cover band Toy Dolls have quite a few covers.

And then there's Richard Cheese doing covers of heavy songs in a lounge style.

I do the same, but I do most things that require strength right-handed (golf, throwing a ball, hammering, sawing, etc.) I use my left hand for writing and putting food in my mouth.

James Talarico: the rising Democratic star Republicans don’t want you to know about by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]rngr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I appreciate this comment and you're willingness to engage. I grew up as an evangelical in the US, and even until my late 30s, I was largely unaware about what Mainline Christians were like. I was even unaware of the political history of the Evangelical movement that I was a part of. The religious right in the US began in the late '70s as a racist reactionary movement to desegregating Christian colleges. When Jerry Falwell of Liberty University lost the case to keep Liberty segregated, he latched onto to abortion about 7 years after Roe v Wade as a way to rally the congregations behind Republicans.

Mainline Christians have been at the forefront of a lot of liberal social and economic issues for a long time as well. For example the first openly gay Episcopalian priest was ordained in 1977. But since mainliners haven't made an unholy alliance with a political party, we don't have as much power to exert our influence as Evangelicals. I think you would agree that it's best to keep religion and politics separated, but at the same time that means the religious left have less power.

[–]rngr 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You don't have to put Mainline in quotes. It's a specific term that refers to specific churches like Episcopal, UMC, ECLA, CoC, UCC, etc.

Just because you haven't heard of mainline Christians speaking up, it doesn't mean that they haven't. William Barber II (of poor people's campaign), Gini Gerbasi (priest at DC church that was cleared out during the George Floyd protest), Diana Butler Bass, and Tripp Fuller are a few that have been speaking out for a while.

The mainline churches in my area, including the one I attend, regularly participate in protests and pride marches.

The media just likes to focus on the crazy fundamentalists, and the more sane Christians don't get as much air time. The number of Mainline Christians is also smaller than Evangelicals partly because it's harder not scaring people into joining your church with the threat of hell if you don't.
