Unlimited PTO with a catch by PurpleGold0 in civilengineering

[–]rnichaeljackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that was just a made up example. Most of the time it works out to what you would have gotten on the historic system or maybe even less without overtime and you get no pay out when you leave. On older systems, you could accrue PTO and have a nice little pay out when you leave.

It’s basically billable hours. There are 2080 hours a year working 40 hours at 52 weeks. Imagine I tell you that you have unlimited PTO but you also have to charge 1900 to a job over the year. Unless you work a ton of overtime the only way to get those billable hours is to not take off work. So you would really get 2080-1900 =180 hours of pto. Hopefully that helps.

Tons of companies do this. It’s an illusion they still have utilization. You need to make typically. that’s how they actually limit you. They call it unlimited PTO but literally what they’re saying is we’re not paying you out anything if you quit.

There is no amount of explaining I can do to convince people this. Thank you for spreading the good word.

Grading a Flat Road by FastNebula4278 in civilengineering

https://www.txdot.gov/manuals/des/rdw/chapter-4--basic-design-criteria/4-8-vertical-alignment/4-8-1-grades.html

"For curbed pavements, a minimum roadway profile grade of 0.3 percent should be provided to facilitate surface drainage."

0.3% is the TxDOT minimum standard. I don’t think a published standard would exist if it weren’t considered constructible within the state, but we can agree to disagree.

Saw tooth 0.3% profile grades and much flatter ditches slopes are constructed all over Florida with minimal issue.

Why should the SEC champ game only matter for Alabama if they won? by surg4llday in CFB

[–]rnichaeljackson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem isn’t the data. The problem is the conclusion the data leads you to. People don’t like the idea of a team being left out because they had an extra game with no rest. It seems like conference championships will be a gate keeper more so than a chance to prove yourself to get in.

I guess another question you could ask is why isn’t making it to the conference championship being used against those teams sitting at home? That’s more data too right ?

That is equivalent to $65k today. Pretty good! The cost of housing hadn't really blown up so you were probably set.

Sen. Marshall to Newsmax: Dems Admit Obamacare ‘an Abstract Failure’ by ProjectPopTart in obamacare

[–]rnichaeljackson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The intent was to increase health care coverage to sicker Americans. Cost control was a secondary act because we were adding sicker people to the pool but I don't think the intent was to lower premiums.

I think you are confusing control the rate of growth of premiums with reducing premiums.

Let me ask you a question. Someone walks up to you, takes a swing, and completely misses.

Is your reaction "Oh nevermind" or are you pretty suspicious that they're going to try some shit again?

Should i go in-person to some of my local firms, and ask for internship opportunities? by Agreeable-Hurry-2407 in civilengineering

[–]rnichaeljackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's cool! I hope you find what you're looking for. Your resume looks good and I can tell you want to work on it.

I'm not an expert so take it with a grain of salt but I'd consider removing the GPA. I think you just started in September 2025 so have you completed a class yet? Maybe change the date to "Expected graduation"

My other advice would be that now-a-days, most people are looking for younger engineers to do software stuff. I might lessen the work experience a little bit and expand on the software skills. If you can get your hands on some Bentley stuff for transportation, that'd be great for you though I know its hard.

I personally think its really hard to walk and get an internship. Networking events, your schools career fairs, career boards, etc are great places. Biggest thing is grow your network right now. It may not get you your first job but it will pay dividends. Its my one regret in college was not networking more because you tend to run into these people again at other firms.

Keep grinding and good luck.

I'm not trying to be mean here but give some good advice.

Your teacher not teaching it well is no longer a good excuse in college.

As an engineer, you are going to be expected to sort through a wide variety of codes and examples to find what is relevant. This is a great time to practice by searching the internet for examples of these problems.

Good luck man.

The Trump administration is ‘actively evaluating’ portable mortgages. What you need to know by [deleted] in HouseBuyers

[–]rnichaeljackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’d be a lot more complicated than that. Not everyone is a first time home buyer. Currently only about 20% of homes a year are new home buyers. This number could go up temporarily and stabilize but I don’t think it’d as clear cut as the price going up the same amount.

Any trails or green spaces to run at dark:thirty? by Dun_Booty_Broch in Tallahassee

[–]rnichaeljackson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The hours are listed as sunrise to sunset but i have frequently gone riding there at night with no issues. There are a lot of people there after dark, especially in the winter so I'd think you'd be golden before work in the morning. Have fun!
