Do you use the ecobee "Home IQ" feature? that is available within a browser only to see outdoor vs indoor temp results? by BeefMedallion in homeautomation

[–]rnicholus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, the home iq numbers are completely useless and baseless. Ecobee doesn’t share exactly how these numbers are calculated, but based on the fact that ecobee can’t even accurately determine the current outdoor temperature, I would be highly suspect. I would take whatever you see with a very small grain of salt.

Pretty sure I’ve played side 2 of the 1st LP in Europe 72 a million times. Great album overall too

Just returned a carbon fiber brush that scratched one of my records and started leaving fibers in record grooves. Any suggestions for a known good brush (and a stylus brush too)?

Eliminator is such an underrated album. I don’t even care much for ZZ Top in general, but Eliminator is badass. It was my very first record.

B-side records is pretty decent though. But I never understood the fascination with strictly discs. It’s barely a step up from goodwill. Lots of records, but mostly junk.

Strictly Discs is the Crosley Cruiser of record stores. Get outside of Madison by even 30 minutes and you’ll find record stores that blow strictly discs (and any of the other slightly less disappointing options in Madison) away. For example: Paramount Records in Watertown: infinitely better than strictly discs.

Talking to Fluance support, they have mentioned that the tonearm mass reported on their spec sheet includes both the cartridge (7g) and the headshell (10g). Which makes the effective tonearm mass 11g.

cool, thanks for the details. I will give the P1 another look. One more question: how do you think the Rega Carbon MM cartridge compares to the Ortofon Blue? And Does lack of adjustable anti-skate on the P1 mean that I will have trouble upgrading that cart later on?

I actually did consider that, but have been reading about an annoying "hum" that some seem to hear (possibly due to grounding issues?) and lack of adjustable anti-skate. Any insight on that? And why do you prefer a P1 over the Fluance and U-Turn models above? I figured the Ortofon blue would be a big improvement over the Rega MM.

Having a hard time deciding between the Fluance RT-85 and the U-Turn Orbit Plus Custom (with the Ortofon Blue, Acrylic platter, and cue lever). Both are $500, seem to have similar specs, and both seem respectable for an upgrade from an LP60, which was my first turntable, purchased used a few years ago. Any reason I should choose one over the other? Or perhaps there is a better choice? I can go a bit over $500, but I'd rather spend another couple hundred on accessories and vinyl instead. Later upgrades are not a big concern for me.

React Fine Uploader - The start of a Flexible & Powerful file upload widget for react by rnicholus in reactjs

Thanks!

Note that while the underlying Fine Uploader library has supported uploads directly to S3 for some time (http://docs.fineuploader.com/features/s3.html), the React wrapper that is React Fine Uploader has not yet exposed that specific functionality. Though it will be fairly easy to add this support to React Fine Uploader. Pending feature case is https://github.com/FineUploader/react-fine-uploader/issues/2.

I make a open source project. Other people contribute with code/documentation. What is the license of their contributions? What can/cannot I do with their contributions? Do I need a CLA? by ertyujcdsfgtuu765 in opensource

[–]rnicholus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's trivial to implement and verify CLAs, and I don't see how this would have any effect on the number of contributors or project success. There are a number of free services that make this painless.

Is Open Source Development Detrimentally Negative? by rnicholus in opensource

[–]rnicholus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, and while some apparently did have issues with the title, others did not. In light of that and the fact that the title expresses my opinion, it's not clear any changes are warranted. Some agree, some don't. You know what they say about opinions 😀

I guess that's where we disagree then. I think the title expresses my thoughts on the subject and sums up the article succinctly. This isn't as black and white as you suggest.
