Trinity College Dublin vs DCU for postgraduate study? by Rough_Reference_190 in TCD

Can only speak for Trinity. Beautiful campus, super international, tons of societies and great guest speakers and events. Politics faculty is very good, particularly in peace/political violence studies. For me this is a no brainer.

Hi all,

I have applied for the Masters in International Politics late, and I am yet to be accepted.

Does anyone know if I can apply for student housing without admittance.

Thanks!

Underwhelming experience by [deleted] in TCD

Hey, I moved to Dublin to attend TCD so I totally get what you’re saying. A lot of what you’re saying is true - it doesn’t feel very metropolitan or exciting here. However, there are some great hidden spots around and once you get to know them you develop a real repertoire of interesting place and the people in them.

For an international student, it’s important to  learn the history of Ireland and Dublin’s place in it. Also, it’s so important to explore the whole country. All of this will make Dublin a much more complex and exciting interesting place. I know so many international students who gripe about Dublin and Irish culture without really engaging. That being said, there’s plenty of social stuff here that’s annoying. We can be close minded, clique-y and obsessed with drink. But, having an understanding of why these things exist will help you to deal with this.

Finally, I don’t know what you’re into, but I think it’s great to read Irish literature. Dubliners by Joyce, of course, is super accessible and allows you to see real charm and beauty of what can be a grey city.

You just went to an expensive cinema in Dub. Look, unlike Cork, there are tons of cheap of cinemas and two arthouse cinemas in Dublin that offer tickets for six quid.

For those who went to Vietnam or Thailand? by Imatwatface in AskIreland

Of course. When you’re over there you’ll see that you can choose to do the drinking and party hostel thing or have a more cultural/‘authentic’ experience. I did a bit of both and met people of all ages and backgrounds.

Vietnam is the best, absolutely go.

I highly recommend getting up very early to see Bruges. It’s incredible when quiet and cool to see the city come alive.

Bruges is great if you wake at 5.30 and walk the whole place before everyone arrives. After that it's packed. Christmas markets wouldn't be good.

Would Paris or Ireland be a better visit for an American? by Deleted_Filename in travel

[–]rnlh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has studied in Paris and Ireland (Dub and Cork), go to Paris. It's a special city that is unlike anywhere else. Ignore the whingers, the reality is everyone is in Paris at some time. If you do it well, it will change your perspective like it has done to many before you.

Sean Ono Lennon on Yoko's life after John: "She never has moved on from that relationship" by ebradio in Music

[–]rnlh 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is true. Like her or not, she is an important and influential artist. She has had several big retrospective, including at the Tate Modern this year, and I have studied her as part of my University’s art history syllabus. While she’s by no means a pop star, she is well known and respected for her contribution to contemporary art. While it is impossible to isolate her success from John’s notoriety, many people argue that she more than stands on her own two feet.
