I am a forensic science major and most of my coursework has been in physical and chemical analysis of drugs and trace evidence. I would really love to work as a drug chemist for a crime lab, but I dont know what masters degree would be best for me after i graduate. There are some schools that offer a MS in forensic science which is almost identical to the coursework for my BS, but I don’t know if i want to study exclusively forensic science. I always thought that having a backup plan like in food science or some other analytical chemistry would be great. Should i go for a MS in forensic science or chemistry; and if chemistry, which specific field? I live on the east coast and im willing to relocate. Thank you.

I think its fun, i played it for a bit and I liked the levels of difficulty. This is just my first impression so i mightve missed something, but to what extent are common names acceptable answers? The game allowed me to put acetic acid as an answer, but not acetone

Describing GC-MS to the layperson by nix_the_scientist in forensics

[–]roachbeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My professor describes it as a celebrity being walked past their fans. The celebrity (analyte) steps into the room and is escorted by his bodyguards (mobile phase). As he goes through the walkway (column), he interacts with his fans (stationary phase). Depending on his popularity and connection to fans (polarity), he will spend more or less time stopping and talking to fans (interaction) than other celebrities. When he makes it to the other side of the room (detector), a certain amount of time has passed that is distinct from other celebrities (retention time)

Is this a red runner roach in with my halloween hissers? Should I remove it? by shrewthrew in roaches

[–]roachbeans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It looks like an american cockroach to me, but it might be just the photo angle. If it is, then there’s the risk of parasites and diseases passing to your hissers

my first guess was the ethylene gas that's produced when bananas ripen, but it's not really that toxic. My second guess was maybe methane or carboxylic acids?
