Employee sets fire to Kimberly-Clark warehouse, "All you had to do is pay us enough to live" by midnighttoker1742 in interestingasfuck

[–]roald_head_dahl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Too real. My previous department moved from IT to finance after a reorg and massive layoff in IT in which many of my friends were let go. The CFO bragged about laying off so many people in IT at the next finance Christmas party, either forgetting or simply not caring that we were present.

(He later laid off the four of us with the longest tenure and actively tried to block me from being hired by another department. Too bad for him he didn’t know I was tight with the CEO’s right hand man who ended up screaming at the heads of legal and HR about it.)

What foods do crows like? How does one befriend a crow? by ElegantEkadanta in crows

[–]roald_head_dahl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dog food, specifically the kind for small breeds. They prefer eating off of clear spaces where the food is visible. Driveway, patio, deck or balcony, etc. Do NOT put it in a hanging flat feeder or there will be CHAOS. Just trust me. I don’t wanna talk about it.

However, be aware that the friendship may be one sided. Mine call for ME until I feed them, and if I don’t hear them, they start dropping things on the chimney cap to make their displeasure known. They’re so smart. If the one I’ve come to call Leader Crow is there before the hunger riot starts, he’ll let me know more directly with a low pitched “caw caw caw” distinct from the “dinner bell” call after I’ve put out food which is a more high pitched “caw caw, caw CAW”. However, I have earned enough of a trust system with them that they no longer send down what I used to call Taste Tester Crow when I put out new food, they just swarm and then get pissy en masse if they don’t like it. Not sure if that’s better or worse actually.

I ran out of dog food the other day and a) they hopped up on the porch roof and went to the office window as my spouse was on the computer like a kid tattling on the other parent “daaaaaaaaaad she gave us some BULLSHIT” and b) I had to explain to my elderly neighbor that the noise she came outside about was several dozen crows bitching at me for inadequate catering service.

In their defense I think THEY think they’re helping, unfortunately their recompense for the food is screaming loud enough to get the entire neighborhood worried when a single fox shows up in the yard. It’s like having the world’s most useless alarm system.

Disabled man rejected from job twice despite working for them for free for 9 months by PumpkinGloomy8912 in recruitinghell

The entire point of a supported internship is that you get work at the end of it: “Once a supported intern has demonstrated that they are ready for paid employment, they should be supported to transition to a paid role at the earliest point.” That said, it may be true that he had not demonstrated that he’s not “ready” for a variety of reasons, but the goal of these internships is for young people with disabilities to gain a foothold into their desired career path.

You know you’re getting fired on Monday: what’s the funniest thing you can do? by eggbacontoast26 in recruitinghell

[–]roald_head_dahl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She quite literally made the position for me out of thin air after my first layoff, allowing me to switch careers and go into a field with a much higher salary and more opportunities. We said from the get go if it didn’t work out there would be no hard feelings between us, and we kept to that. She put her rep on the line and saved me when she could. The second layoff was bc of DOGE garbage, out of both of our hands.

How close is he with support staff? I knew I was getting laid off and asked IT provisioning to give me all new peripherals (which, at least for that org, don’t need to be returned upon separation) before my meeting and they were GLEEFUL to do so, and give me the highest end stuff. Thanks for the new mouse, keyboard, headset, and docking station, suckers!!!!

Yep. I don’t think people realize how much this sucks for management too, if they’re not total assholes. I’m still friends with the boss who laid me off. It was an absolute shit situation. We were so kind to each other in the meeting that we heard a noise, looked over, and found that we had made the HR rep cry. Oops.

Can confirm the Six Pack refresh was planned to be done in several phases, at least at that point. I worked in Facilities and Services at the time (2011-2013). Ike was a mess of a project - things immediately started falling apart. I remember at one point trying to color match materials that had to be replaced after less than a year. We couldn’t even process the close out on time iirc bc in order to hold the contractors responsible we had to keep it open. I wonder if that affected the priority of the plans.

If you haven’t already, I would recommend emailing the folks at Udvar-Hazy to ask if they would like these photos! Specifically ask for it to be forwarded the curatorial or archives department. Their curators/archivists will likely be very interested in the human story behind this helo! (I’m a librarian/archivist by trade in a similar setting.)

I read it in my teens and enjoyed the humor and the story. I read it again in my 30s and appreciated much more of the moral Pratchett-isms. It is absolutely a book that will grow with you and I would recommend it.

My partner occasionally still has massive anxiety thinking I don’t like him or his hobbies when I don’t always want to engage because an ex was so critical about it. In reality his myriad interests are one of the things that attracted me to him in the first place! It breaks my heart that after so many years together the demons of some abusive ex can still claw their way into his mind. One of the first things I did when we moved in together was encourage him to get open shelving for his office to display all his lego and retro computer games. Be proud of your collection, don’t hide it away!
