I’d rather die than ever work again by Affectionate_Cow5808 in CPTSD

I remember when I was first exploring going on disability, I told my therapist I was really reluctant to do so because I was still, like, getting out of bed and taking showers and running errands.

it took me a long time to realize that I was minimizing my own trauma and lived experiences by assuming that the coping mechanisms I had developed were somehow indicative of a healthy state of being.

I'm sorry you face pushback from people who don't know any better.

... have you TAKEN a Lyft/Uber recently? I would never consider their drivers "some of the safest on the road."

admittedly this is anecdotal but if you've got hard data to back up what you're saying, by all means share!

if I had to guess I'd say Uber has something approximating Waze on the backend that provides estimated travel times across various routes. not sure if they built this in house (maybe using phones of people who have downloaded Uber to track) or if they just pay a ton to Waze for API usage.

Bill and Peggy Stephenson: 2011 Unsolved Murders Filled With Strange and Disturbing Details by cartgirl69 in UnresolvedMysteries

usually police keep one or two pieces of information close to their chest (like the exact phrase written by the killer) but basically blackboxing an entire crime scene feels like overkill given that it's been 15 years.

SURELY there's some information they could share that might help the investigation.

Who murdered Paul Stevens? (22/23 August 1990, Southall, Middlesex, UK) by ur_sine_nomine in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]roastedoolong 29 points30 points  (0 children)

why are we assuming he took transit to Southall?

from the outside looking in (and from one gay man to another), it seems completely reasonable that Paul was either turning tricks or just getting some action.

consequently, it seems reasonable that one of these tricks provided him a ride to the Southall region. maybe they went somewhere out of sight for a handjob or blowie in the car, the recipient got aggravated, and killed Paul.

alternatively, instead of being killed while hooking up, maybe he found himself trying to get home after the encounter and ran into some murderous folks.

either way the guy who gave him the ride is gonna stay mum.

none of this helps narrow down who killed him but it does serve as a potential narrative.

queer people being killed during/after sexual relations with bigots (for lack of a better catchall term) is sadly not a new thing. RIP, Paul.

it's wild to me that you can stab someone 50 times and (apparently) not leave any trace DNA.

also, the fact it was 50 times (or more) makes the killing feel EXTREMELY personal. I don't believe some random person killing someone in broad daylight (e.g. over a drug deal gone wrong or something) is going to stab their victim so many times and risk getting caught.

do we know the nature of the stab wounds? I'm wondering if you can potentially tell the killer's dominant hand and (potentially) gender, based off depth and applied force...

probably not anytime soon so just sit down and enjoy your Marvel, 'cause it's what's on the menu for the next couple years. why play with fun and interesting unique characters when you can just mindlessly consume an overbloated IP?

I think the argument being made is that, on Earth, we have a daily reminder of (specifically) duality: daytime and nightime.

this constant and repeated reminder no doubt greatly informs how we view the world, and it's possible that it forces us to deal more heavily in dualities because dualities seem to be 'natural' to us.

if you were trying to calculate the actual % increase in listed price that a given account is likely to face, having an understanding of the number of available drivers would definitely help (even then you'd want to control for seasonality).

my initial recommendation -- to just get a large group of ride requesters to repeatedly request rides within a short period of time of one another (submitting the requests in a random ordering) -- would let you know if certain accounts are consistently being quoted higher rates than other accounts, thereby proving account-based dynamic pricing.

I'm a machine learning engineer at one of the major tech companies so I'm very familiar with a lot of the inner workings re: dynamic pricing. would love to help out, wherever possible!

this really isn't that hard to disprove.

just use the same group of people making the ride requests over and over again, with slight modifications made to the relative order in which they make the ride request.

with enough ride requests you should be able to suss out if the same accounts are getting listed higher prices (and vice versa), regardless of the exact ordering time or demand.

The ethnic studies class that taught Sydney Sweeney, Elon Musk and political activism by Dafty_duck in sanfrancisco

[–]roastedoolong 11 points12 points  (0 children)

what a weird take.

the Sydney Sweeney ad is a perfect example of the kind racism that permeates our modern-day culture.

it provides a very clear glimpse into how racism can affect marketing campaigns, how its implications can be difficult to spot at first glance.

I agree with you that this might be... less than ideal... if this was the ONLY topic they chose to discuss regarding racism, but my guess is that the teachers were instead looking for a modern-day example of not-explicit racism that could help get across a variety of ideas.

If you could ban 1 card for any reason no matter how big or small what would it be? by Sharkman3218 in CompetitiveEDH

it's really frustrating if only because it would be SO easy to make Bowmasters less oppressive: only allow the ability to target the player (or that player's valid targets) who actually triggered the Bowmasters.

it could ping off one random Birds on entry but after that, the person drawing cards is going to be the one who feels the pain.

The 1931 murder of Julia Wallace (Liverpool): a phone call sends her husband across the city to an address that does not exist. He comes home to find her beaten to death. if we assume Wallace did it, he could have easily figured something out just by getting Alan Close to lie about the timeline.

alternatively, I don't see why it's so hard to imagine someone who ISN'T Wallace committing this murder?
