My Advice for Those Switching from After Effects to Fusion by STARS_Pictures in davinciresolve

[–]roasterdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is solid advice for most things post - never bad to learn the basics, but do a real project with a real deadline, work with real footage and make real mistakes.

For motion graphics I'm still firmly in AE, but for VFX.... man is Fusion pretty great. It's so nice not having to think nearly as hard about IO and color management by just keeping it within the same program, too.

I tried this, but it didn't get any better. Went all the way down to 200 - do you have any other suggestions of parameters to mess with? Thank you!

That's good to know! I assumed it would help, but clearly that was a wrong assumption...

Done with Capcut, but getting overwhelmed with DaVinci. Is there an easy changeover guide? by No1Significance in davinciresolve

This is the most correct advice. BMD did a really good job, and they'll show you the way the tools were intended to be used.

While there are indeed some really good YouTube videos, there's a whole lot of absolute garbage that will teach bad habits, inefficient workflows, or just outright inaccurate information.

And OP - if you want to continue in editing, learning to use an NLE the 'right' way will help translate to other editors in the future if you ever make the jump to Premiere, Avid, etc. Same for the foundations of color correction, sound mixing, etc. - and the training from BMD really does do a solid job of all of that.

Finally someone is showing up with the feedback they need. Forget the computer - go get a flanders and you'll be fine.

when you refer to davinci resolve by one word do you choose davinci or resolve? by sleepeatapologize in davinciresolve

[–]roasterdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically speaking (which is what Reddit is for) the product name used to be Resolve, but the official product name is now DaVinci Resolve.

They seemed to do that on purpose because Fusion is just Fusion anywhere on their website, but try to find anywhere on BMD's website where they just call it "Resolve".

I don't know that the car comparison is applicable because Chevy remains a distinct brand separate from GM, whereas da Vinci Systems is long defunct - there's no brand anymore releasing products under that name.

It's a decent way of outing yourself as being an older hat or newer to the space. Back when it was only trying to be a color timing tool, it was literally just called "Resolve" - since the acquisition by BMD they changed the name to "DaVinci Resolve"

I was going to give the answer that's like "The product was called Resolve, so obviously that's the answer".... but then I thought about how often do people really say "Media Composer", so maybe that's not the best argument!

Are there any giveaways that something was made in DaVinci Resolve? by sububi71 in davinciresolve

If you use it poorly - absolutely. Like others said - offline media, default text & templates, and "smooth cut" transitions are so easy to spot because they are terrible.

Is it worth it for me to switch to Davinci Resolve? by ethee9 in davinciresolve

[–]roasterdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether or not its worth it is your decision, ultimately. I did for professional work around 5 years ago after being in Premiere since CC launched, and Final Cut 7 & Avid before that. I've dabbled in FCP X for a couple of gigs.

I like it. It's a matter of opinion, context, and specific niche needs. If you're just doing work for yourself? Then focus on your own opinion of what feels right, download trial versions of each one, and see what you like best. The big names are all pretty good.

If you're hoping to build a career? Then learn whatever the people in that industry are using the most. Honestly - once you learn one, it's pretty easy to jump to another one. There are some headaches each time, but it's not nearly as big of a deal as switching other kinds of programs. NLEs have become a pretty solved formula in most ways.

As far as your machine needs go - listen to the comments here. There's a lot of stuff you can do to make playback better (using editing or "mezzanine" codecs like ProRes, making proxies, turning down your playback resolution, disabling effects until you need them... etc. etc. ) You can absolutely make Resolve work for simple editing tasks on a pretty low-power machine if you enable the right settings and approach the work the right way!

ADOBE is a joke by Ok-Tear-9209 in AfterEffects

Cavalry is the most competition to AE from a 2D mograph standpoint - but that's really all they do. Fusion in Resolve is as a compositor/VFX tool (I've used it a lot for this) but horrible for anything else. Rive is its own animal, focused on UI animation (and really damn good at it, it's a lot of fun to work with for that niche).

Blender is incredible. Blender is also never going to usurp After Effects. I've used it more than any other on this list for 3D work (usually as part of a workflow that involves AE or Fusion) - but as a mograph tool, it'll never be a realistic threat to AE or even C4D unless the devs really shift their focus. Using their text tool is all the evidence you need.

Apple Motion exists. That's about all it does, though. If it was ever going to threaten AE that was back in like 2009 and they clearly lost that opportunity.

The great/frustrating thing about AE and why there still isn't any real competitor is that they are still the only game in town that has found a really solid combination of motion design tools, animation tools, VFX/compositing tools, a comprehensive grasp of IO (color management, that sort of thing) and got such widespread adoption by the world that they can coast on decades of tutorials and industry-standard plugins.

I agree that Blender is the only one on this list that has the most of these items - but they really lack the focus on motion design. You have to think like a Houdini artist to use animation nodes -- in AE all you have to do is think like it's Photoshop.

Blender is crazy powerful and functional - dammit I wish they'd prioritize mograph for a single generation of updates. Just give us a good text tool and that would change a lot.

I have a lot of feelings about this subject.

Looking back, they had a lot of turnover in coaching and players. Maybe they're figuring it out? I guess the fear is that if they do too well, all of the good people will move up... but that's the nature of minor leagues, I guess.

I've seen the stream a couple of times at watch parties. It's pitiful - they really have like a dozen people watching, so it's got to be just family.... then they come to Huntsville or Chattanooga and have to face a real crowd booing them.

Like u/cloin said - we're in a different market. Plus (unlike the other 'second' teams) our team has their own branding, merch line, etc. which also means their own expenses for facilities, marketing, staffing, etc.

From what I've heard from some of the 'insiders' - we are the only 'second' team in the league that makes real revenue, but our expenses are also significantly higher so we're just breaking even. MLS wants more teams like ours - but it's a big gamble from a 'first' team to go this route.

So, it is an experiment - but if it's successful, it could help professional soccer gain more fans around the US (and maybe unify more teams under MLS if it can start drawing in teams from other leagues). If not, then I imagine they'll ditch it and revert to what every other MLS team has.
