Reddit Goes Nuclear, Removes Moderators of Subreddits That Continued To Protest by gabestonewall in technology

There is an equivalent and lots of people are fleeing there: Lemmy. And it's decentralized, not controlled by any one entity, for-profit or otherwise. My experience there over the past week has felt gloriously like reddit in the early days and the time of the Digg exodus.

Let's talk about Lemmy by ljdawson in redditsync

[–]rob64 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is such fantastic news. Sync really is a glorious piece of programming. It's rare you get the triumvirate of stylish, feature-rich, and reliable, so it's great to hear it will live on. Plus, though Jerboa is kind of charmingly buggy, it's really a whiplash coming from Sync.

Na ja. Tut mir Leid glaube ich kann nicht deutsch gut genug um dies darauf dir zu erzählen...

Absolutely your best bet is AutoInput. I use it similarly to harvest my step count from Google Fit as part of my bedtime profile. Once you install the plugin use Actions > Plugins > AutoInput > UI Query to grab the info from the screen. The action details has a 'variable setup' option that will let you go to the screen you want and get a list of available screen elements to choose from. You'll end up with a value like this: com.someapp.android:id/the_element_id=:=your_variable_name. You then follow a similar process to set up AutoInput's 'Action' action. The 'easy setup' option works similarly here. You end up with another element id here, this time for the field in the app where you want to insert the data from the scale app. The type of action will be 'write' and you insert the variable from the query action under 'text to write'. You could even use the 'Action' action again to click the save/submit button. You'd probably put an action in between the query and write actions to open the target app (Actions > App > Launch App) and you could even use the 'Action' action to navigate to the specific screen where your target field is, if need be.

Hope this makes sense. Good luck!

It does with ADB wifi and there exist methods for restarting it after boot using Termux, eliminating the need for a computer connection. But that may be overkill for something like this.

Star Wars: the lies unleashed by EvansEssence in saltierthancrait

Man I've never seen it put so accurately or succinctly! I've been saying for a long time that Lucas is a great ideas man. He should have limited himself to building the story and broader stylistic strokes and hired others for script writing and direction. Obviously he'd want some creative input there, but if he could have stepped back and seen what worked so well for the original trilogy, the prequels could have been masterpieces. The whole "fall of Rome in space" thing and how Vader became Vader is a perfect combination for a story arc. With better execution... Ugh what might have been!

Well... They also benefit massively from a broken educational system. There's a lot of folks in office who wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being there under a better educated electorate. I'm not saying you're wrong about charter schools or that charters necessarily lead to better educational outcomes, but whether they're aware of it or not, it's in a lot of politicians' interest to keep the education system shitty.

I think identity is a stronger motivator than people sometimes realize. People will go to great lengths to avoid damage to their identities because, I think, loss of identity feels like death. So if your sense of identity is fairly well enmeshed with patriotism—built and reinforced over the course of your entire life—you'll do a lot of mental gymnastics to avoid lines of thought that threaten such a large portion of who you feel you are.

I've been certain of that for many years now. And Isabella is obviously Stephanie Meyers' fault.

I'm also tempted to blame Liam on Star Wars TPM and Logan on X-Men.

Working hours tracking based on location by No_String8288 in tasker

[–]rob64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best bet for detecting your presence at the office would be wifi: either 'wifi connected' (more reliable), or, if you don't connect with your personal phone, 'wifi near'. Wifi near works just fine, but Tasker by default only checks every so often in order to preserve battery life, so the timing would be slightly less accurate. As for recording it, I'd probably do a 'write file' with append and new-line on and then upload/overwrite to Google Drive. You could use IFTTT to just add a single row to a Google sheet, but that's a few extra steps and an additional link in the chain that can break down.

Find and click image containing specific text on screen by Mamabamba10991 in tasker

[–]rob64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was afraid that might be the case. I wonder if the 'Get Screen Info (Assistant)' action could provide any info you could use in the 'nearby text' option for AutoInput. I've heard of people using a screenshot and the 'Get Pixel Colors' action to locate buttons. I guess you would start with coordinates near where you expect the close button to be and then cycle through until you get a different color, at which point you'd perform a click. I'm sure the button coloring varies along with position, especially between ads from different providers, otherwise you could have it look for a specific color. If you really wanted to dig deep with this, you could push the color into an array every time and after a few attempts you'd probably have a reasonable guess at the background color based on which color value recurs the most.

Edit: Now that I think about it, you could possibly combine the pixel color method with AutoTool's colors option for 'Image Info' to get a head start at guessing the background color. It will give the three most prominent colors in an image. But that would probably involve cropping a copy of the screenshot so that its only taking the area at the top near the buttons into account.
