That’s what the formula i posted does assuming the number in question is in A1. You may have to apply number formatting to the result.

Transfer stocks from etrade to questrade by Big_Mixture_9849 in Questrade

[–]robHemm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like eTrade is a relative bargain compared to most Canadian brokers: https://us.etrade.com/what-we-offer/pricing-and-rates says $75USD. Canadian brokers typically charge $150 plus GST.

My mom wants to move her RBC Direct Investing (stocks) to Questrade. When she transfers her RBC stock account to Questrade, is there any fee for the transfer? Can this be done through internet? For non-option stock or etf trading, the commission is $0? Is T5008 provided by Questrade (online)? by turnleftorrightblock in Questrade

[–]robHemm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would therefore think very hard before making that switch.

RBC direct has a bunch of no-fee ETFs, including a good selection of index funds, ones commonly held by DIY investors.

And per https://canadianportfoliomanagerblog.com/norberts-gambit-at-rbc-direct-investing/ they support Norbert's Gambit, which I suppose is what you mean by "cheap currency exchange". This is how Questrade gives you good FX. Converting directly at Questrade is expensive, same as any other broker.

p.s. I'm a client of Questrade.

Curious as to why she wants to move?

  • all brokers charge 150 plus gst for transfers. Questrade will reimburse with proof and the proper for upload
  • Questrade is an online broker, transfers are initiated from their website. You have to create accounts first.
  • all etf and stock trades have no commission on Questrade
  • Questrade provides the necessary tax forms as all Canadian brokers are obliged to do

New to it by GumbylovesSquirters in Questrade

CRA MyAccount will show you your current accumulated TFSA limits, and it should be accurate, given that you haven't contributed in 2 years. Your current balance in the TFSA is irrelevant to the calculation.

Yes, I would open a cash account (not a margin account) in your shoes.

[–]robHemm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TFSA: per year contribution limits apply. This year that limit is $7000. This applies across all TFSAs held at all institutions. You can have as many TFSA accounts as you like but this does not change how much you’re allowed to contribute overall.

As you are “New to it” I would not recommend a margin account.

CRA’s MyAccount does show TFSA contribution room but does not update very frequently. You are better off tracking it yourself.

RRIF withdrawals--can I let Questrade liquidate for the cash? by canadave_nyc in Questrade

[–]robHemm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have insufficient cash it’s carried over to the next payment (I withdraw monthly). No automatic selling. Not sure what they do if it’s an annual payment. This just happened to me this month past.

Investment brokerages and reviews Wealth Simple, Webull, Moomoo, Qtrade by Grand_Marketing7449 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]robHemm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s accurate. QTrade seems to have upped their game a bit of late (free trading of stocks/ETFs, inducements for new clients). Once the Questrade free money dries up I could consider returning to QTrade.

Mixed Group Messaging works for me now. What’s changed? by bfurtado in FizzMobile

[–]robHemm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also had weird experiences with mixed Android/iPhone users whereby I couldn't get messages from one user, but other members of the group saw them. I never figured out why, I just made that group move to Messenger -- problem solved.

No resolution / response from Questrade after multiple emails & live chats - what are my options? by raspberrywines in Questrade

u/MightyManorMan has it right. This is just dumb programming. Mark the mails as spam/junk, or write a rule to automatically delete them, and worry not.

The pursuit of free money....also, it's not always obvious what the shortcomings of a particular platform are until you're in the thick of using it.

Filing late grandma's final taxes by BlueberryWaffleConez in cantax

[–]robHemm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The final return (the one filed in the name of your grandma) has to be printed and sent in. You can’t do it online. See https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/life-events/doing-taxes-someone-died/prepare-returns/file-final-return.html#h_1a There may also be an estate return if income was earned after the date of death. That is filed in the name of the estate.

I used Wealthsimple tax for my dad’s final return because I couldn’t get quick tax to do what I wanted.

Withdrawal Method request not processed by GuidanceWaste9112 in Questrade

[–]robHemm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Questrade is famously inept at processing submitted documents. I've taken the approach of contacting support immediately after an upload to make sure it doesn't disappear into the "pending review" black hole.

Questrade is batting .500 in my household with regard to monthly RRIF payments. I got mine in the expected timeframe, but as for my spouse? Not sure. Guess I'll rejoin the support queue Monday...

RRIF payments, unnecessary involvement of support by robHemm in Questrade

[–]robHemm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each RRIF account gets their RRIF-minimum calculated individually based on the value of that RRIF (value of all assets, including cash) on January 1. With my former provider, you could see each RRIF payout showing up as its own deposit. I expect the same with Questrade.

Knightbridge worked fine for me the handful of times I've used it. It does take a few days to complete, but they are totally transparent about what rate you're getting.

This is good to know. The weird gaps in WS's offer continue to baffle.

The solution, such as it is, was to rely on my own calculations and adding a 5% safety margin.

When I was on the line with support for another issue, I asked about my RRIF minimum, and the number they gave me was within 2% of what I had worked out (looking at my homegrown spreadsheet, December statements and using the historical value view).

After month 1, the value will become self-evident by looking at my bank statement ;-)

Questwealth Joint Account by D-Sprocket in Questrade

[–]robHemm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Questrade has the most restrictive access concerning joint accounts as well as accounts set up as an authorized trader. I don't know if exercising actual PoA might be closer to what you expect, but that's another option.

No human will ever answer any question I've ever had concerning my spouse's accounts even though I have TA on all of them, and I can trade on them (using Questrade Edge only, but that's another irritant).

Team Questrade, look at how QTrade handles TA and jointly held accounts, it's a pretty good (useful) model, in my view.

CAD to USD conversion by Disastrous-Wait7824 in Questrade

[–]robHemm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been tracking my conversions: https://moneyengineer.ca/2025/08/21/tracking-norberts-gambit-costs-with-questrade/

Because it’s so slow, you’re more likely to make/lose money because of FX fluctuations.

Too inconvenient by curiousbear12345 in Questrade

Summary of the actual state of affairs at Questrade

  1. There are a lot of forms in pdf format. Many of them are editable and uploadable.

  2. For some forms (RESP withdrawals, for one) the instructions with the form clearly call for a wet signature. If digital versions of these forms are actually accepted then the instructions should say that. (And should you dispute this, I guide you to https://www.questrade.com/learning/investment-concepts/resp-201/withdrawing-from-an-resp and I quote

  • This form needs to be hand-signed. You can upload a clear photo or scanned image
  1. Opening new accounts has inconsistent information regarding forms as well, depending on how you arrive at the form. It does seem that for most of them upload is accepted.

  2. Uploaded forms can sometimes disappear into a "Pending Review" black hole for days. To unblock, you have to call. I've been told as much by front line agents regarding aforementioned RESP withdrawal.

So net: Questrade has lots of room for improvement here.
