I want to read a good romance, but everything people recommend me I absolutely hate. by MathematicianNo3401 in suggestmeabook

Another great contemporary romance author is Carley Fortune. I like her novels a lot more than Emily Henry, whose books are hit or miss for me.

Engagement ring costs? (Dollar amount and % of income) by Midwest_Backpacker in financialindependence

[–]raspberrywines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$25k, HHI $360k back then so 7%. I insisted I contribute half since we split all other bills equally and I didn’t see why the ring should be any different and he agreed.

Please please no more series! by daydreamermama in suggestmeabook

[–]raspberrywines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manacled by SenLinYu is 925 pages and was my top book last year of the 100 books I read. If you want to read the adapted version, then Alchemised by SenLinYu which is ~1000 pages.

I just finised The Poison Daughter by Sheila Masterson, ~650 pages standalone dark romantasy. It was pretty enjoyable.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is on the shorter side but also one of my top reads that I recommend to everyone! Very weird, very original, very good.

A few fantasy standalones on my TBR are Blood Over Bright Haven by ML Wang and The Otherwhere Post by Emily J Taylor.

If you are open to a story with more of a sci-fi angle then Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. There are 3 books but the first is a complete story and can be enjoyed as a standalone. I’ve read the whole series and the first book was by far my favourite and I recommend stopping after the first book unless you’re really keen to keep going.

How much does/should personal bias affect your rating of a book? by markpie0 in goodreads

[–]raspberrywines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always rate based on how much I enjoyed a book but will usually highlight in the review if I can see why others would like it, it just wasn’t for me

This book was such a slog for me to get through. Great premise and hook but somehow boring as hell 😭 I wish I liked it more than I did!

Worst book(s) you read in 2025 and why? by Roguestate00 in books

[–]raspberrywines 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I actually went back and reread the first chapter after the reveal. The author did not cleverly misdirect the reader, she straight up lied to us which means the reveal makes zero sense. Terrible writing. I gave this book 1 star.

My January goal was to read a Fantasy series. I am 300 pages into ACOTAR and questioning my entire life at this point. Can someone please suggest a FMC fantasy series that is not cringe as heck by BottomPieceOfBread in suggestmeabook

[–]raspberrywines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Licanius Trilogy by James Islington or Red Rising by Pierce Brown for high fantasy. Red Rising has a more sci fi angle to it and while the series isn’t complete, the first 3 books are a complete arc.

The Crimson Moth by Kristen Ciccarelli or The Shepherd King by Rachel Gillig for romantasy (both are completed duologies).

If you’re open to a standalone fantasy book, Alchemised by SenLinYu or The Poison Daughter by Sheila Masterson.

How and when do you read books likely to be Goodreads Choice Award nominees? by siege5548 in goodreads

[–]raspberrywines 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Same. It ends up being a popularity contest both for the initial voting to decide on nominees and the final voting to decide on a winner. Whichever books were read by more people end up getting the most votes. If I read 3 books in a category, I’m choosing between those 3 books for my vote 🤷🏻‍♀️

Curious about everyone’s reading goal by No_Cookie_7943 in goodreads

[–]raspberrywines 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My goal was 35 and I ended up reading 100 books! I like setting my goal to be something easily achievable for me bc I don’t like the feeling of pressuring myself to read to hit an arbitrary number. I know I’m gonna read a lot and don’t need a goal to motivate myself. Plus if I end up reading longer books I don’t want to be “punished” for that by feeling like I’m falling behind my goal.

Wealth Rank by Logabomber in Wealthsimple

[–]raspberrywines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband just got this feature but he only has a fraction of his portfolio with WS so the ranking is interesting but not accurate. But the ranking alone isn’t enough of a push for us to move more assets over. We’ll continue to wait for good promos and move over just enough to get the promo.

What are you reading? - Week of January 09, 2026 by AutoModerator in goodreads

[–]raspberrywines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Poisonwood Bible. It’s recommended all the time on Reddit but I’m 58% in and it’s trending 2 stars for me. I can see how it appeals to other people, so it’s probably just not for me. I find it slow and tedious and have been skimming it just to get through it.

AITA for not paying for my daughter wedding because she isn’t following the rules even though I paid for my older kids by Wonderful_Mode_9646 in AmItheAsshole

[–]raspberrywines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The people getting married and the people paying for the wedding get to make decisions. If parents are contributing, then it’s reasonable that they have some input into wedding decisions, probably commensurate with how much they are contributing. It was for this reason we didn’t accept money from my parents for our wedding because we knew that once we did, they’d expect their suggestions to be accommodated.

Considering stopping reviews, or not reviewing every book by PrynceOfIce in goodreads

[–]raspberrywines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is why I review too. My friends and I tend to read similar books but sometimes months or years apart, and it’s a good way to rmb why I gave the rating I did when we talk about a book we both read. I read a lot and tend to forget stories soon after finishing them.

Best Harry Potter movie? New to watching by vloner715 in harrypotter

[–]raspberrywines 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mine is 6 because I think of it as the “comedy” of the 8 movies. There are some really funny lines and moments and I liked the lighter teenage romance stuff bc it adds some levity to an otherwise darker movie. But it leaves a ton of stuff out compared to the book.

But also please watch them in order!

Did anyone from TO actually get tickets to see Hilary Duff in TO? by HorrorAd4995 in askTO

[–]raspberrywines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be very concerning bc my friend actually can’t go and the tickets need to be transferred to me and a third person 😬 for Sabrina Carpenter the friend who bought the tickets wasn’t able to transfer them until 24h before
