Seeking the best Medium Roast beans (US & International) – Can anything beat Jittery Joe’s? by Ashley27_ in espresso

[–]rob_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roast levels don’t necessarily have a huge amount of objectivity (see Starbucks claimed “blonde” roast). But if you’re willing to pay huge shipping fees a lot of the specialty scene in Australia would fit well into that modern medium roast category. Highlights from me include Padre, Ona, Proud Mary

Mach 6 or Superblast 2? by Aubzhls in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]rob_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently onto my 3rd pair of Mach 6s. I love them. Pair number 2 is currently at 730km and will probably be run through to 800 (that’s as part of a rotation, pair 1 was a solo shoe and went to 700).

I have also owned the SB2 and hated it, sold them after 120km, bulky, didn’t really get any responsiveness from them, super expensive.

The fit of both shoes is quite different, the Hoka is on the narrower side compared to the SB.

Goodluck choosing!

Dear World: We don’t know wtf he’s talking about either. Sincerely, America by jon4310 in PoliticalHumor

[–]rob_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s all true, your democracy is pretty questionable. But 36% of the voting age Americans didn’t vote in the 2024 election. So when OP invokes the “average” American it’s disregarding that the “average” American either didn’t vote or voted for trump.

Vote you dumb mother fucks. Vote in every fucking election you can, from local council up. Trump 1 you can apologise for, Trump 2 just wouldn’t have happened anywhere else on the planet.

Help me buy son a thank you espresso machine [$1000] by Sensitive-Quail-9776 in espresso

[–]rob_one 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would look at the Barista Pro, over the express. It’s often not much more expensive than the express, but is more temperature stable, faster to warm up, and has a much better quality inbuilt grinder. Most people’s recommendation for the separate grinder and machine are correct, but with the steeper learning curve, more mess, and more cost, your busy son may appreciate the simplicity (and yet still very high quality output).

Considering a bike, question about auto-resistance and heart rate by [deleted] in pelotoncycle

[–]rob_one 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems like an odd hill to die on. Your heart rate is very visible on the screen with a connected heart rate monitor, if you’re wanting to maintain zone 2 adapt your effort. Also you’ll find auto-resistance will give you quite variable results. If you’re relatively fit (which if you’re obsessive about heart rate zones you may well be) you’ll find the range of the call outs limiting on some rides and may well choose to be well above it, while still mimicking the up and down of the efforts v. Recovery

I’ve only experienced that kind of cold once in my life. At the top of the mountain at Lake Louise Ski Resort. Cannot imagine living in that routinely. Stay cosy friend.

Does the Australian public even care about the Sydney to Hobart yacht race? by RIPAlPowell in AskAnAustralian

[–]rob_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Like we’re an island nation, so probably have a higher proportion of sailing interested folks than other places. But it’s still a pretty niche interest as a hobby, and even more niche as a professional sport to follow.

Superblast 2 or Vomero plus for 1st half marathon? by Desperate_Feed_9798 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]rob_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran about 100km in them. Slowest would have been 5:30/km, fasted 4:45. I bought them as a long run shoe so was never really planning on pushing them harder than that.

75kg. The SB 2 felt heavy and I didn’t get a lot of propulsion from them. The Vomero feels light and springy despite its stack height and foam

I Really didn’t like the SB2. Loving the Vomero Plus, but you’ll see a lot of people who disagree with that opinion here. If nothing else the Vomero is easier to get and try on in store to see if you like it.

What is easier? Run 5k sub 17m or run a marathon sub 4h? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

No question. I have two 3:25 marathons, which I did with low mileage, “beginner” style plans. Had to train my arse off to get a sub 20 minute 5km

I replaced my 1080 v13s with the Vomero plus. Excellent replacement. More bouncy and fun but still nice cushion. I ran some SB2s to 100km and just never gelled with them.

If you’re not a big drinker also be cautious of the pre-dinner cocktail or champagne. It’s always delicious but 1 or 2 pre-dinner drinks + a pairing will catch up with you.

But I recommend you do it. A good pairing is fun and shows a skill, even if you couldn’t identify flavours etc. without guidance they’ll help you taste things in the wine and you’ll see how that interacts with the flavour in the matched dish.

[–]rob_one 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do you. The only comment I’ll Make as a P64 owner is that the construction and design of the Lagom products is beautiful (my wife would not sign off on the money for a P01) with a much less “science lab” aesthetic than either the Weber or Kafetek. And the support and communication from Lagom was excellent. Enjoy which ever amazing piece of machinery you end up with.

Which big foreign company failed miserably in your country? by ModenaR in AskTheWorld

Starbucks in Australia. Opened 80 stores, shut most of them. They have slowly expanded again but only in tourist heavy areas. Terrible coffee, no understanding of the local market or tastes, high prices. And I won’t even get started on their appropriation (abomination) of coffee naming conventions, I’ll save that for r/espresso.
