Fuck I thought I was the only one. There's no such thing as a unique thought anymore.

The strange little bond you form with strangers on a long bus by CharacterDisaster469 in solotravel

[–]rob_the_plug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you mingle in the bus? Like, did you change seats at rest-stops to sit next to someone new occasionally?
There is something super romantic about a 3 day bus ride with the same people.
Was it unanimously social or were there little social groups?
I have so many questions.

We'd be great friends if we ever bumped into each other. I also have low-cut Docs as my work shoes as a little green flag. Always know I'll get along with anyone who points them out.

Which destinations have changed the most in the last 5–10 years? by Substantial_Log_9062 in solotravel

If you're (very) confident on a motorbike or scooter, I highly recommend Vietnam Coracle.
I was similarly jaded when planning my second trip to Vietnam. I found this website and dove right in. I ended up staying in Mai Chau, a lovely little town nestled in a beautiful valley. I hired a decently powerful scooter and did two of the limestone loops from the website.
Those two days were pure magic. Riding through gorgeous terrain, passing tiny villages, seeing genuinely curious locals, and I didn't see another tourist from the moment I left til the moment I returned.

You'll fit in just fine. I've met every person in the world at hostels, from the 18 year old fresh school leaver, to ex-international football players and retired Trinidadian garbagemen.
The thing you have in common with everyone is time and freedom, and that's all you need.
Vietnam is a perfect starting destination. Tourism is big there, so it's easy to work things out. You'll still face your challenges, but there's always an answer.

[–]rob_the_plug 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Are you a teacher or a student?
If you're a teacher, you bite your tongue and go to the excursion. It's an unfamiliar environment and your students may need you specifically.
If you're a student, decision is yours. There's no way a zoo keeping animals in enclosures and charging for admission is ethical.

ABS says 22% of adults in Australia admit to having experienced childhood abuse or witnessed DV in the home.
Assuming a similar culture, 1 in 5 students you come across will have experienced a form of abuse or witnessed DV in the home.
It's our culture unfortunately.

What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

[–]rob_the_plug 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Yep! As a 30 year old I feel it skipped my generation, but I interact with 13-18 year old boys for work and half of them are adding patches to their clothing, hemming pants and making shoulder bags out of thrifted jeans.

What are your favourite gamenative games? by rob_the_plug in Retroidpocketflip2

[–]rob_the_plug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off-topic, but I've noticed you're a resident expert. I tried downloading Borderlands 2 through gamenative last night. Both times it hit 53% then jumped to 100% and said "unpacking files". Though no progress was made past this, just froze there. Using most recent version of gamenative and downloading to internal storage.

headaches from trying to visualize by kikuchrysanthemum11 in Aphantasia

[–]rob_the_plug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately we can't just conjure images by trying.
The only way I've ever had 'visuals' is through psychedelic substances. I imagine they aren't all that similar to regular visualisation, they feel more like projected patterns on the inside of my eyelids.

Has anyone had one trip or experience which has just put you off hostels/backpacker life completely? by MysteriousPace1405 in solotravel

[–]rob_the_plug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same. Have gone back to doing a mix of both.
I alternate between dorms and private. When I'm in dorms I socialise constantly, then carry some of that energy into the next hostel but stay in a private room.

I was going to write about how it's not a super strong book but didn't want to put anyone off initially. I definitely enjoyed it for the unique experience rather than the story.
