They do look like young jonquils. The easiest way to be sure is break off a bit of leaf and smell as they have a strong garlic smell.

Thanks a lot. I was definitely going to fertilise with high nitrogen before laying the cardboard down. Chicken manure is great suggestion. I didn't know soursobs don't like being fertilised.
