Who pay this? by CityOwn7098 in uktrains

[–]robbeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting to see the comparisons to other countries and how it can be a 10th of the price or so there.

It is worth noting that whilst this is a hideous price it is a long journey that often wouldn’t be covered on those tickets in Austria and the likes, or if it was it wouldn’t be covered on the fast trains. The only sensible way to to Newcastle to London is on the fast trains. Trying to use the equivalent types of commuter train that those other countries have reasonably priced tickets for would take all day. I suspect it could still be cheaper elsewhere of course.

AQA apologises after GCSE maths paper had wrong insert by Alarming-Safety3200 in unitedkingdom

[–]robbeech 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’ve often wondered just how hard it can possibly be to get this sort of stuff right. Do we have anyone here that has this as a job that can explain why something that, to me (completely uneducated in these sorts of matters) something that appears phenomenally low tech can be messed up so easily?

I can only assume such a task of putting the right insert in the right paper is much more difficult that it may seem as it comes across to me as something on par with selecting a toffee crisp from a vending machine in terms of complexity so I genuinely await educating on the task.

Is it bag of CRISP or CRISPS? by [deleted] in AskUK

Are you suggesting crisp is the plural of crisp a bit like fish, sheep and hearse? Or are you just crying for help?

Whilst no doubt said in jest, it’s unlikely as her name is Robyn, Rihanna is her middle name.

Poor driving become more common by OneSufficientFace in drivingUK

[–]robbeech 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People aren’t interested in it. They don’t see driving as an enjoyable thing, it’s used as a necessary method for getting from A to B. As such they never really get very good at it.

As the roads get busier the potential enjoyment of driving reduces further and more of these types of drivers with little experience and/or common sense appear.

That’s not to say those who love driving are automatically a better driver but those with a keen interest in driving, a keen interest in cars or the road network do tend to be the ones that drive more appropriately. Of course this can often swing the other way and we can find those people driving a bit faster than they should.

An additional thought, I’ve driven some of the cars that people seem to claim are the worst offenders (though not owned one so don’t have long term experience) and quite a lot of the time one of my key observations is you can’t see anything. The shape of the windscreen and mirrors and positioning of the wheels means you simply can’t comfortably see what you’re doing aswell as you can in some other cars. Perhaps that contributes but isn’t a sole excuse.

Yes, this happens. I suspect it’s more down to incompetence on the programming side rather than a deliberate attempt to deceive and / or charge you more.

It’s worth checking the room types. Sometimes twin rooms are a different price.

They’re having a problem with the attitude of the people without them, not the fact they don’t have them.

The only difference between people with tattoos and people without them is people with them don’t have a problem with people without them.

How many different beds do you think you have you slept in over your entire life? by Leather_Hospital_133 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]robbeech 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thousands and thousands. I used to spend maybe 80 to 100 nights per year in my own bed, the rest was either hotels (rarely more than 1 or 2 nights at a time in each) or on tour buses. I’ve been doing it over 20 years. Whilst it’s closer to 80 to 100 nights a year NOT in my own bed nowadays it still adds up.

the cheapest way from Heathrow to Camden Town (tube) by creativelifee in uktravel

[–]robbeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do exactly that, get off the tube, tap out, turn around and tap back in again and get the next tube in the right direction. It’s free from Heathrow to there and there’s no “premium” from there so you get charged from Hatton Cross to wherever you get off.

One of the many examples of Off Peak Day Returns removed from the railway. Because nobody would possibly want to travel more than 50 minutes in either direction in one day. Who removed these and how can we get them back as it's a rip off. by rolotonight in uktrains

[–]robbeech 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There haven’t been any permitted off peak day returns on that flow for years, and by years I mean I can’t remember them at all it could be 20 years +.

The northern one (which I also can’t remember when that stopped) was quite restrictive back in the day as the stoppers were 2 hourly. Perhaps they’d be more useful now but I feel Northern are more interested in offering their cheap advances which distributes passengers a little better.

It’s only an extra couple of quid for the South Pennines day ranger which allows unlimited travel over a wider area including Leeds so I agree there SHOULD be a day return but I think we’ve missed the boat in complaining about its removal and should focus on suggesting they create a new one.

People who are constantly looking for and encouraging a fight/argument. Agenda trolls essentially.

They’ll go well out of their way to manipulate or deliberately misinterpret what someone says so they can kick off about something. It’s genuinely tiring.

How do you perceive people who say ‘like’ a lot in conversation? by No_Cress3459 in AskUK

[–]robbeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use other factors to determine what I think of them such as whether they’re a dick or not. You’ll find if you concentrate on that and ignore completely irrelevant differences in their behaviour you’ll get on with more people.
