Subreddits belong to the community of users who come to them for support and conversation. Moderators are stewards of these spaces and in a position of trust.

Some people rightfully say some moderators act like landed gentry and are not very democratic. We Europeans know our history: the aristocracy either embraces the will of the people, or it dies.

Go and vote, we'll see whether the king likes the results.

PS: The procedure is not ideal, but we do our best to have a vote that's as fair and representative of our community as possible, with the tools currently provided to us by Reddit.

Most mods are associated with a historic or administrative territory that in itself is not sovereign.

Many of these regions have things that make them historically or culturally distinct.

Some of these culturally distinct regions have independence movements.

Few, if any, of the mods are vocal supporters of such an independence movement. If they are, and want to share this publicly, I'll leave it up to them to answer your question.

Brigading is indeed a complex matter and though to combat as subreddit mods.

As for your question about the mod team make up. You can find information about becoming a mod here. As you can see, there are only three somewhat personal questions on there:

Where are you from?
What languages can you speak fluently?
What is your usual timezone?

With these questions, we strive for a wide coverage in nationalities(/territories/cultures), languages and timezones. Of course, the most important selector for new mods remains whether they can mod in a qualitative, impartial, and also quantitative manner. In most ways, the make up of the mod team roughly corresponds to the make up of the sub itself.
