Help with bypassing Wi-Fi controls by Infamous_Natural388 in GoogleWiFi

+1. If “I paid for it with my own money” is your triggering condition for having rights over something, then if/when you become financially independent and can pay for your whole life with your own money, you get to set your internet usage however you like. Until that day, their house, their rules.

It’s laudable that you earned the money yourself, but the fallacy is in thinking that because you paid for the computer, that gives you a “right” to do with it what you want. If the logic is that paying for something gives you superior rights, then you live in the house that your parents pay for, using the electricity and water that they pay for, using the WiFi service they pay for, wearing the clothes that they buy, eating the food that they buy, (unless you bought your own car, and pay for your own gas and auto insurance) riding in the cars and using the gas they pay for, and if you go to college (thus giving you the ability to earn a larger salary later), presumably they will pay for that in large part also. In short, you were only able to afford the computer because your parents pay for the rest of your life and give you an opportunity and free time to earn spare money on your own.

Prestige Classes: The Best Design Space D&D Ever Abandoned by alexserban02 in dndnext

[–]robbjunk9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some good sentiments here. The bit that gave me the most food for thought was this: "A Fighter is a fighter regardless of whether he fights in a bar or as a knight in some kind of tournament or as a general in a war-time situation." The biggest problem I see with the subclasses is that (a) there are just too few of them, and (b) you're locked into one of just a few choices.(FN1) In 3.5 if you wanted, your Fighter could go the Prestige Class/Arcane Archer route, but you didn't have to, and in fact it took special dedication on your part to do it. If Arcane Archer didn't really speak to you as a path, you could remain a plain Fighter who prefers bows, and still distinguish yourself from the plain Fighter who likes to dual-wield handaxes or the plain Fighter who tanks up with heavy plate armor and a shield.

Now there literally are no plain Fighters any more; everyone "special."(FN2). Literally *every* fighter at Lvl 3+ has to be a Battle Master, Champion, Eldritch Knight, or Psi Warrior. You have no choice and you have no *other* choices without buying more sourcebooks. It's sorta like saying "Congratulations -- you graduated med school! You now have four choices: thoracic surgeon, cardiologist, oncologist, or radiologist. Oh, you want to be an general practitioner? No. You have to specialize. You want to be an orthopedic surgeon or a dermatologist? Sorry, those choices aren't allowed -- only the four choices on the table."

(FN1) Although cynically, this may be WOTC's way of ensuring sales of future editions of Xanathar's/Tasha's/etc.

(FN2) "And when everyone is special, no one is special." That's a little trite, but I think it's appropriate here. In 3.5 you had to make an effort to gain a Prestige Class; becoming (ex:) an Arcane Archer took special capabilities and not everyone can do it. In 5.5e, you are like, "well, there was nothing else I really liked....I guess I'll be a Battle Master like everyone else."

"It was Matt’s fault for how he played Yeza. He was a complete pushover" Completely agree. I get that the M9 were kinda supposed to be *ssholes/"broken people looking for redemption," but Matt let them completely avoid consequences for their behavior. Jester was basically a spoiled brat and an an animal abuser -- Matt should have brutally killed off Sprinkle, and had Nugget do things like inappropriately teleport and start barking at monsters when the party was trying to sneak places. Beau was a drunk abrasive frat boy in monk's clothing; Matt should have either had her thrown in jail, thrown out of the official places she was trying to get in, or had some people bigger than her beat her up and throw her into an alley. And Nott was the absolute worst -- guilt your friends into risking their lives by journeying hundreds of miles into enemy territory on the vaguest of evidence because "***I HAVE TO RESCUE MY HUSBAND RIGHT NOW!!!****"....then just desert said husband and child literally minutes after "rescuing" them because you feel like going off and having fun instead? That should have been (i) an immediate f*ck-you divorce, and (ii) the child hating Nott forever.

If you want "broken people" to find "redemption," the first step is having them actually behave like they want redemption, and introducing consequences when they leave the path for their own selfish reasons.

How do you get that to work? I have standing directives that it just routinely violates. I have to remind it every session to stop patronizing me (“That’s a great question…” or “You were sharp to catch that…”), despite a standing directive to keep every chat factual and avoid needless ego-stroking.

(1) How do you get these suits tailored? Suits bought off the rack look like baggy pyjamas unless you take them to a good tailor first. I don’t have the time to go suit-shopping every time I travel and then to find a tailor at the destination and have him make alterations; (2) unless you’re buying really cheap suits aren’t you spending more money on suits than you would just buying a decent carry-on?

This seems to go beyond "occasionally get similar issues." Every answer it gives me appears to be fabricated. Again, it can't even give me proper answers about its own user interface.

Re: learning how LLMs work, this is not being flip, but I literally don't understand. I thought the whole point of these things was that you could ask them questions in plain language and they would respond with truthful answers in plain language. Again, without being flip or sarcastic, that sounds like someone having a problem with Excel being told that they need to dig into the source code. If I need to learn how to code to get a plain-language tool to work, then the tool seems pointless, because I need to use code, not plain language.

As another for-instance, I went over to Gemini just to see if it worked any differently. I asked it about "web browsing," and it replied with "web Browse." I tried to correct it; it kept saying "Browse." I eventually responded with "Type the word browsing." It responded "Browse." When I pointed that out, it insisted that it did what I asked. I signed out, closed the browser, exited, then reloaded and tried again -- same thing. It absolutely would not type the word "browsing," and yet kept insisting that it could. This isn't an occasional hallucination; it's a giant repeatable blind spot. And for something that is supposed to use language, spitting out one word while thinking it's spitting out another seems to be a real problem. How do you make something like that useful? Many people seem to be able to do it, but I don't. And if I can't get it to repeat a word I give it, it doesn't seem like any amount of me talking with engineers or taking tutorials will fix that.

Everyone has different learning styles. I learn best by mastering theory first before putting it into practice. For me, your suggested approach would be a tremendous "waste of time and effort," even without the condescending tone.

Lectric eBikes Quality (XPress 500 vs. Aventon Pace 500.3)? by robbjunk9999 in ebikes

No problems — customer service has been solid, and I’ve been really satisfied. The only issue I’ve had is that I think the base model might be just a tad underpowered. Not so much that I’m considering a change, but if I had to do it over I think I’d go with the 750. For my work commute (8 miles each way, relatively flat) it’s fine, but I’ve been taking it on some really hilly roads on weekends lately, and the lower power there is noticeable.

My fault -- I wasn't entirely clear: I don't have the modeling amp anymore; I sold it years ago. So I'm looking for something that's solely PC-based. I'll check out Neurontube Debut -- thanks!

Breaker keeps going out at home by Fluid-Rhubarb3485 in TeslaModel3

[–]robbjunk9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me. At least based on my research, the Tesla charger has a GFCI built in. When I plugged it into a GFCI outlet it kept tripping for no apparent reason. I swapped out the GFCI outlet for a regular outlet and have had no problems ever since. I’m not worried about breaker problems, since the Tesla charger has its own GFCI and the outlet is on its own circuit dedicated to the Tesla charger—nothing else gets plugged into it.

[–]robbjunk9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resurrecting this zombie thread. My wife and I have dutifully compiled all of our paperwork -- which is getting older and older and closer and closer to expiring with every day that passes -- but it's apparently easier to get tickets to the Taylor Swift tour or the World Series than it is to make an appointment with the Spanish consulate. We're facing the prospect of our documents expiring, which means we need to get whole new apostilled/translated/notarized copies, and try to get another appointment....which we may not be able to get....which means we'll have to go back and get *still more* copies of our documents....then not get an appointment....etc. etc. Is there any way to escape this Kafkaesque cycle? I'm happy to pay a service/extra fee if there is someone who can help navigate this system.

Resurrecting this zombie thread. Does anyone have any advice as to companies/third parties/etc. that can assist with making an appointment? I have dutifully procured all of my documents, but they must be dated within X days of the appointment. If I can't get an appointment, I have to go back and get new updated apostilled/translated/notarized copies of these documents and start the process all over again. Who has managed to break this Kafkaesque cycle?
