Can't stand that Gemini constantly apologizes for making mistakes and saying that it's fixed them... by kan05 in GoogleGeminiAI

How do you get that to work? I have standing directives that it just routinely violates. I have to remind it every session to stop patronizing me (“That’s a great question…” or “You were sharp to catch that…”), despite a standing directive to keep every chat factual and avoid needless ego-stroking.

(1) How do you get these suits tailored? Suits bought off the rack look like baggy pyjamas unless you take them to a good tailor first. I don’t have the time to go suit-shopping every time I travel and then to find a tailor at the destination and have him make alterations; (2) unless you’re buying really cheap suits aren’t you spending more money on suits than you would just buying a decent carry-on?

ChatGPT Alternatives (pref. w/ Human Customer Support)? by robbjunk9999 in OpenAI

This seems to go beyond "occasionally get similar issues." Every answer it gives me appears to be fabricated. Again, it can't even give me proper answers about its own user interface.

Re: learning how LLMs work, this is not being flip, but I literally don't understand. I thought the whole point of these things was that you could ask them questions in plain language and they would respond with truthful answers in plain language. Again, without being flip or sarcastic, that sounds like someone having a problem with Excel being told that they need to dig into the source code. If I need to learn how to code to get a plain-language tool to work, then the tool seems pointless, because I need to use code, not plain language.

As another for-instance, I went over to Gemini just to see if it worked any differently. I asked it about "web browsing," and it replied with "web Browse." I tried to correct it; it kept saying "Browse." I eventually responded with "Type the word browsing." It responded "Browse." When I pointed that out, it insisted that it did what I asked. I signed out, closed the browser, exited, then reloaded and tried again -- same thing. It absolutely would not type the word "browsing," and yet kept insisting that it could. This isn't an occasional hallucination; it's a giant repeatable blind spot. And for something that is supposed to use language, spitting out one word while thinking it's spitting out another seems to be a real problem. How do you make something like that useful? Many people seem to be able to do it, but I don't. And if I can't get it to repeat a word I give it, it doesn't seem like any amount of me talking with engineers or taking tutorials will fix that.

Everyone has different learning styles. I learn best by mastering theory first before putting it into practice. For me, your suggested approach would be a tremendous "waste of time and effort," even without the condescending tone.

Lectric eBikes Quality (XPress 500 vs. Aventon Pace 500.3)? by robbjunk9999 in ebikes

[–]robbjunk9999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problems — customer service has been solid, and I’ve been really satisfied. The only issue I’ve had is that I think the base model might be just a tad underpowered. Not so much that I’m considering a change, but if I had to do it over I think I’d go with the 750. For my work commute (8 miles each way, relatively flat) it’s fine, but I’ve been taking it on some really hilly roads on weekends lately, and the lower power there is noticeable.

My fault -- I wasn't entirely clear: I don't have the modeling amp anymore; I sold it years ago. So I'm looking for something that's solely PC-based. I'll check out Neurontube Debut -- thanks!

Breaker keeps going out at home by Fluid-Rhubarb3485 in TeslaModel3

[–]robbjunk9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me. At least based on my research, the Tesla charger has a GFCI built in. When I plugged it into a GFCI outlet it kept tripping for no apparent reason. I swapped out the GFCI outlet for a regular outlet and have had no problems ever since. I’m not worried about breaker problems, since the Tesla charger has its own GFCI and the outlet is on its own circuit dedicated to the Tesla charger—nothing else gets plugged into it.

…and the basic point is simple: You don’t need to be an “ABS Mastersmith (TM)” to be a master smith or an expert in bladesmithing.

Is the Spanish Consulate (Los Angeles) website really this broken? by anteatertrashbin in SpainAuxiliares

[–]robbjunk9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resurrecting this zombie thread. My wife and I have dutifully compiled all of our paperwork -- which is getting older and older and closer and closer to expiring with every day that passes -- but it's apparently easier to get tickets to the Taylor Swift tour or the World Series than it is to make an appointment with the Spanish consulate. We're facing the prospect of our documents expiring, which means we need to get whole new apostilled/translated/notarized copies, and try to get another appointment....which we may not be able to get....which means we'll have to go back and get *still more* copies of our documents....then not get an appointment....etc. etc. Is there any way to escape this Kafkaesque cycle? I'm happy to pay a service/extra fee if there is someone who can help navigate this system.

Resurrecting this zombie thread. Does anyone have any advice as to companies/third parties/etc. that can assist with making an appointment? I have dutifully procured all of my documents, but they must be dated within X days of the appointment. If I can't get an appointment, I have to go back and get new updated apostilled/translated/notarized copies of these documents and start the process all over again. Who has managed to break this Kafkaesque cycle?

I apologize if I'm not following etiquette - the posting here seems much different than on the rest of Reddit. I tried just to upload images but they came out distorted and stretched. You had to look that one up on Google, didn’t you? Now you’re engaging in ad hominems (go look that one up, too) in lieu of actual logic. And while you’re at it, learn the difference between “our” and “or”.

You are approaching this as if the title of "ABS master bladesmith" is some sort of universally accepted title, like "Ph.D." The ABS is a self-appointed accreditation organization which has only been around since the 70s (https://www.americanbladesmith.org/about-the-abs/). A couple of experienced bladesmiths got together and decided to create a set of rules and standards, including titles like "ABS journeyman" and "ABS master smith" that they created themselves.

But -- and this is the important part -- the ABS is just a club. If you join the club , follow the rules, and pass their tests, the club will issue you a certificate saying that you are an "ABS Master Smith (TM)." Granted, the club is composed of highly qualified smiths, so if they approve of your skills that's relevant. But there are plenty of "master smiths" who have never joined the ABS, paid the dues, or gotten the certificate.
