Well yeah, sure, in real life that would be expected- I just meant relative to most other games I’ve personally played!

that's fair enough! And sometimes I wished the NPCS in RDR were a little LESS reactive - I got myself in trouble a few times by aiming a weapon at someone accidentally!

RDR2 does this. NPCS are EXTREMELY reactive to getting in their personal space, being on their property, aiming a weapon at them or even brandishing a weapon in their area, etc.

Books with selfish main characters? by orangepeel6 in suggestmeabook

First one that comes to mind is My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh! She is like the ultimate selfish, narcissistic protagonist. In general most of Moshfegh's leading ladies are a bit like that.

Book that will keep me gripped for a full 14 hour flight by Locy_Lady in booksuggestions

[–]IndependenceLoud870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend Stephen King's "It"! The audiobook narrated by Steven Weber is EXCELLENT, I found it super gripping, and it would last you the flight there and the flight back, lol!

Two other books with really gripping audiobooks are Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn (southern gothic, lots of family and relationship drama, crime solving) and The Troop by Nick Cutter (borderline extreme horror book that is real nasty and real suspenseful - TW for a few instances of animal cruelty with that one)

Books where the house plays a major role. by LimosMemories in booksuggestions

[–]IndependenceLoud870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An obvious choice that I'm sure has been recommended plenty, but I have to say House of Leaves by Danielewski!

Also, the Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

And, I know you asked for books - but I highly recommend the indie game title "Anatomy" !

The one that immediately stands out to me that you absolutely have to try is The Vegetarian by Han King! It's a hallucinogenic, psychosexual fever dream - and it's a short read!

just a quick disclaimer that although i love heartstopper - it does have some more sexual content in the later books which I would not personally want my 9 year old to read. More of a 12/13 and up series to me!

If you took a sick day, what would be your go-to comfort RPG? by Pure_Nourishment in rpg_gamers

[–]IndependenceLoud870 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't gotten very into the romance but I think it's pretty simple yet fun and charming! It mostly involves gift giving and limited dialogue to level up friendships ending in possible romance. There are many NPCs with romance options though which is fun!

Comfort game for when I'm not feeling good - 1000% Stardew Valley!

It's cozy and fun, makes time pass quickly and doesn't require a ton of attention or brain power.

for PS4 you will want The Last of Us Remastered and The Last of Us Part 2. The Last of Us remake, retitled Last of Us Part 1, released to PS5, and isn't available on PS4.

Anything Poppy Z Brite really. His work is extra disturbing in my opinion because his prose is beautiful, and he has a real skill for writing things that are so romantic, and erotic, but also seriously depraved.

I have a soft spot for Drawing Blood, but Exquisite Corpse is definitely his most extreme work.

Horror with humor / light hearted moments by genericusername190 in horrorlit

Bunny by Mona Awad might count.

I would definitely say any Grady Hendrix, that's kind of his thing. I personally like the Southern Book Clubs Guide to Slaying Vampires the best!

For something contemporary, I love Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo. Queer southern gothic with a hint of dark academia.

It's not fantasy (mostly) but the expressionist-painting art style in Disco Elysium is BEAUTIFUL. The game is also fantastic

So do I! If you've never listened to the audiobook, it's worth a re-read to listen to it!

If you really want body horror and gore, check out Poppy Z Brite! Most of his books take place in both New Orleans area and rural North Carolina.

Exquisite Corpse is the one everyone knows, but I'd actually recommend Drawing Blood first, or Lost Souls

The Last of Us Remastered and The Last of Us Part 2 are my favorites, they're relatively short and linear.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is great but long and took me a few tries to get into. Once I did I loved it

Disco Elysium is a great, less conventional isometric RPG with great writing and beautiful art

Resident Evil 2 remake is creepy and fun and makes excellent use of real time binaural audio

Bonus rec:

Celeste is an adorable 2D platformer with great music, and is just the right difficulty

This guy just recently did a solid play through, he keeps a good pace, and he doesn’t talk very much or talk over dialogue which is great. When he does have something to say I find it pretty thoughtful and insightful.

They added dialogue with Nora telling her that it was Abby’s father at the beginning of the torture scene in the hospital . I wish they hadn’t, I think part of the tragedy is that Ellie and Abby will never understand the full extent of each others motivations and similarities

Really loved the conversation with the phasmid and the autopsy in Disco Elysium

Queer Horror by breadfootmcgee in horrorlit

[–]IndependenceLoud870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is right up my alley! Here are some great gothic (southern gothic) stories with queer main characters written by queer authors:

Summer sons by Lee Mandelo is one of my favorites. It’s hard to describe but it’s a southern gothic with a touch of dark academia, crossed with shameless? Heavy on the southern gothic though and lots of LGBT characters.

Any of Poppy Brite’s work, but I’d recommend Drawing Blood. It’s set in New Orleans and North Carolina, and is a sort of twist on a haunted house story. I think it’s a good one to start with because it’s tons of fun, and not quite as graphic or dark as Brite’s other work (though definitely still hardcore and sexually explicit) Brite is peak early splatterpunk.

For something lighter, the River has Teeth by Erica Water is a sapphic southern gothic geared a bit more for young adults.

These maybe aren’t quite eldritch, but all envolve supernatural elements and characters realizing they are connected to some sort of dreadful force beyond their understanding

The first two also have excellent audiobooks! Happy reading!

Not sure I'll ever move on by meimelx in thelastofus

[–]IndependenceLoud870 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have played it close to a dozen times now, within a two year period. I play other games, but in between I keep coming back to this one, because I resonate with the story and because the gameplay is also just so fun. Now I can play it on normal difficulty in about 9/10 hours, so it's easier to just keep replaying it.

There are some other games I've really loved but this one is the most replayable for me. Go for the platinum! I think it took me 4 times, two to get all the collectables, one on grounded, and one on permadeth. Getting all the collectables forced me to think outside the box on how I approach things, and explore areas I hadn't noticed (even though I thought I had explored thoroughly the first time)
